Ok, basically I have been using a mirror Voquv as I have the Ultra rare Romulan fighters and figured i would try out this carrier malarky.

However, I'm not sure I'm getting the most out of it as a tactical captain, o I come to you, oh mighty forum.

What carrier is ideal? I have been hearing good things about the karfi, but would appreciate feedback.

Also, what boff layout would you use with your ideal carrier?

Thanks!

You want to get the most out of your Tactical Captain? Get out of a carrier.

Jump in a Raptor of BoP.
You know Cryptic has Jumped the Proverbial Shark when they introduced Tractor Pulling to Star Trek Online! :D

Wow as if everyone didn't see that coming

Did you not see the "try"

The karfi can lay the hammer down with the tac at the wheel/bridge

The standard voquv can be handy too with a plasma build putting 4 plasma boosting rommies consoles in

Or you could just be single minded and get a bop or raptor and not try new things and be boring o the joys

Carriers can be fun with all the attack & hangar combinations. Especially Klingon carriers.
If you want to fly a carrier, imo, you're best off with:

-Kar'Fi carrier loaded with Fer'Jai frigates or
-Vo'Quv carrier (regular, fleet or mirror regardless) loaded with B'rothl BoP

You can always play around with the hangars to find out what works best for you, maybe some combination of different hangars.

Just keep in mind that Tac buffs do not affect your pets

Karfi for sure. Best Tac oriented carrier in game.

If you can get it, the Jem HEC is another good alternative, an escort though with a single hanger bay. Essentially kinda same idea as the Fed Armitage. Won't gimp your tac abilities too much either.

If you have your elite scorps the Kar'Fi would be hard to turn down.

Before elite scorps, Advanced BoPs are just pure madness. Hell, they might even be better then the elite scorps once you get good at making them alpha strike.

all 3 klingons full carriers are capable (I take back the bad things I said about the mirror VQ. Once I actually flew her she wasn't bad. Not my first choice but a solid ship)

I love my Kar'Fi, but to be honest, its more about looks and badassery then performance compared to a VQ. They both rock.
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!

    Fomm affects your pets!

Ferjais in pvp rule the roost over the scorpions purely because of all the debuffing they do its like having you very own mini sci officer tagging along

However in pvp scorps do slightly more damage because they don't need micro managing as much their pretty much designed for the Feds so they can't grunt at their computer and just press attack and forget about them

for PvE? bugganought. Since PvE is bascially a point & shoot so arm it with cannons (dual or dual heavy depends upon your personal preference), use engine with better turn rate in impulse speed efficient at low power, and hit reverse for turns. Equip it with elite scorpions and you are good to go.

Mirror Vo'Quv with a Tac Captain.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H-W54fqR0U

    Marauder with a Tac Captain.

Both ships outfitted as cheaply as possible. Both in Elite STF. PvP your on your own. PvP skeers meh!

But really damage wise it is difficult to go wrong with a Tac Captain. APA is a long duration buff. So is DEM. In fact they have the same duration. Tac Fleet is a long buff.....you see where this is going? This isn't saying you HAVE to use things like DEM. Just saying that in the ship you initially selected, that's the choice for focusing on carrier damage. Massive warp plasma clouds, or a huge healing build, well sure that's different.

So my advice, stick with what you have. Get good at it and understand it. When you can make that ship do whatever you want it to do you will never regret any ship that you buy as YOU will make the ship and not the other way around.

    Cheers and happy flying!

IIRC, both lockbox carriers allow the slotting of a tac cmdr BOff...

Recluse via universal CMDR slot, J'H Dread Carrier runs a Tac Cmdr 100% of the time...

If I were you, these would be the ones to shoot for. Also, I think the Recluse might be DHC-compatible, not sure on the J'H...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I'm in the same boat as the OP, trying to figure out a carrier strategy for my Tac KDF. At the moment I am thinking about Kar'Fi with 2 torps and 5 turrets. The torps would let me shoot stuff from a distance without losing damage to travel range, and the turrets can defend against close attacks somewhat, while pets can work the field between here and there. There are enough Tac slots to boost the weapons, too.

    Dunno though.. Would it work?

I'm a Tac and decided to buy a Mirror Vo"kuv after long days spent in BOPs. I bought it because it was cheap and did not first research to see if it was an ideal Tac-boat. That said...

Other than getting used to the abysmal turn rates, I've been having a blast. I run with with a mix of BOP and slaver pets (sometimes just BOPs) and am currently experimenting with a mix of single cannons, turrets and torpedo/mine launchers/cutting beam. I've not done PVP with it, but PVE missions and STFs are just fun.

The thing I wish the game offered was better ui options for deployed fighters. A small window displaying how many were active and what their status was would just be awesome.

Agreed there's nothing worse than someone else spamming pets and not knowing what the situation is with your own

The Marauder Patrol Cruiser, Fleet Corsair Cruiser, or Fleet Vo'Quv. With the MPC and FCC being the two most recommended.

Karfi is the only serious Tactical Carrier outside of a lockbox. The Jemmie Dread is a viable Tac carrier also, but I wouldn't want to fly one in PvP. The other carriers simply don't offer enough bite to really get anything out of a Tac captain, and most of your buffs won't affect pets.

    And FOMM isn't a buff.
