Respec Profession

With the introduction of the reputation system and with the likelihood of additional reputation systems, the tendency for some fleets to allow only one toon per player and many other barriers to entry for having multiple alts, the process of users creating and leveling players, from my experience has begun to diminish.

Maybe it's time to allow players not only to change traits, or even race, but to change profession as well?

Just like traits, it wasn't particularly clear for new players how a particular profession influences their capabilities in game. I know many players who have a particular play style that is ill suited to their chosen profession and trapped from truly specializing due to the frozen accumulation of assets, reputation points of fleet ships on their main.

The sad reality is cryptic could probably charge whatever they liked for the ability to change your character's profession, and people would do it regularly. Hell, I respec skills almost monthly and I'm not even a subscriber.

So maybe it's time we allowed those who didn't want multiple toons to undo the mistakes of day 1 and properly focus their character to match their play style?

We're still waiting for them to man up and make it possible to re-trait your character. The revamps post-f2p broke and made many traits no longer do what they originally did. So we have most people's main characters from back then with useless and non-functioning traits.

a career respec would be nice... but I feel that they know it would be like shooting themselves in the foot when everyone and their grandma respeced to the only viable Tactical captain and their illusion of balance would not longer be maintained.

I suppose that's a risk, but given that they are finally working on traits, even race, they might as well go whole hog and add the ability to respec profession too.

There are almost no MMO's out there that allow you to change your profession/class/whatever it might be called. So I doubt we would see any different from STO.

Alts are still possible, I'm sorry if people don't want to put a little effort into it...I've got plans or have already over a dozen characters.

I don't have the compulsive need for instant gratification plus I love variety...I will even be making more alts as ships come out and builds hit me...I know I'm looking forward to making a new character to fly the Andorian ship if it peeks my interests.

I admit my roster is tac heavy...but I don't fly all tacs...each class has there ups and downs...I would rather they move the game a bit farther away from DPS is king and give more use to the trinity.

With their plans to perhaps up the ranks in the future they can change things, I for one hope they do...but either way I will make alts...I just wish more races were added for more variety!

Yes there are. One is still running and its from the 1990's.

Alts are no longer viable thanks to the fleet and reputation system timegates. No matter what you do an alt will not match you main character's post-max rank level (rep/fleet status) in any reasonable amount of time. I wouldnt roll an alt now even if they paid me to.

The last thing I want to see is a profession-swap service. I'm still holding out for a profession revamp that would not be simply be a defined set of traits at character creation but instead traits based on the choices you make during gameplay, be they science, tactical or engineering in nature. While each series Captain showed a leaning towards a certain profession, they were not pigeon-holed into only being science, tactical or engineering etc. Having dev time spent on creating a shortcut like this would almost certainly rule out such a meaningful revamp of what could become a defining feature of this game.

Isn't that how it usually is on these forums when someone posts and idea?

What I do not understand is how people will support being able to change species or traits when they want, but when it comes to professions, they say just go make an alt. Well right back at you. Just go make an alt if you are unhappy with your species or traits and if traits are broken, they should just fix or replace them. No real need to offer a trait respec that I can see. If you do not like it, go make an alt right. ;)

The skill trees have changed and skills have changed. Some players may have accumulated items or rewards that are bound or unique to their main character. Making an alt would defeat the purpose they have behind their main character.

And unlike some people having multiple alts for me has in many ways taken the fun out of the game. Special missions start to get less special after doing it several times. The way some people I have talked to are with alts sounds more like they have an addiction than a fun past time. (I got that knew ship now I need to go do that same mission with my other 7+ characters.)

Aren't many...only one I ever played that you could is SWG and thats been dead for over a year. (longer if you count the NGE as its death.)

Alts are viable but people just don't want to put the time into it like I already said. God forbid you don't get to get everything right away if you make a new character.

Oh look my brand new 50 isn't as powerful as my dedicated 50...that is so evil and wrong! I actually have to put a little effort into it...just so wrong!

Then again I suppose your probably one of the people that loved doing a 100+ elite STFs to never see the prototype tech and think it was a better system than what we have now.

My hopes are that with the planned revision of the character creation come May, they will be revising character traits as well. This might mean they will give us profession, gender, race etc tokens buy-able as well.

Not wanting to grind out an alt for every ship, profession, or change in mood does not make someone lazy. The real question is how lazy or mind numbingly bored does someone need to be in order to sit for many hours in front of a computer game and do the same quests on several different characters to get the same rewards he or she may have already earned 2 or 3 times over. If someone likes doing that then great, but a vice is not a virtue. I am not going to respect someone or think they are a good player because they have a dozen+ alts.

I think of it like this:
    Does it negatively affect me?
Does it negatively affect the game?
    Is it reasonably possible?

My personal opinion about not liking something or not wanting it for myself is irrelevant. If I do not like it, but it is not going to hurt me or is not reasonably possible then I am not going to waste my time trying to shoot down someone?s idea. If it is something that interests me then I will support it. I hate the theme of being against something for the sake of being against it. That seems to be a popular past time in this forum.

It is not going to ruin my day if I cannot change my TAC to an ENG or my SCI to a TAC or my KDF Klingon to an Alien nor am I going to make any more alts to twink out or spend any more or less money. However, I would be willing to pay for a service to change traits, species, and profession. It is fundamentally no more game breaking than making an alt. It is just a convenience for people with more money than time or who know the content so well that the idea of doing it again is almost sickening at this point.

I think I would rather cut my irritable neighbors grass with a pair of scissors.

Oh please, the OP asked if it 'was time' and I'm replying with a 'No' and why I hope it will never be 'time'. Thats more feedback than some other people would reply with.

I can understand why people want to make things easier on themselves second, third, or seventeenth time around. Especially since its content they've seen before. But a line needs to be drawn somewhere to prevent the game from suffering from a shortfall in lower level characters not populating the game's zones, running it's content and feeding into it's queues.

The game loses out financially if full time players (those who alt it up especially) are no longer placed in the situation where they can be tempted to buy a tier 3 ship from the cstore to aid their character through the Captain levels. I don't buy the argument that ship (and item) sales wouldn't suffer if people didn't have to alt, because they would still buy those ships for the special consoles. I'm leveling another Klingon character right now, and am in that exact situation. I certainly wouldn't be contemplating giving Cryptic money if I could just redeem a token using any of my converted level 50's vast dilithium stores!

If anything, to combat the feeling that people have when considering the arduous nature of rolling a new profession, I think that the professions themselves should be revamped to make them significantly more utilitarian and differentiated from one another.

As some other games have done, we could also look at ways to carry across some measure of 'allowances' so that things are easier for new alts, but not just giveaways. You should have to play the darn game to wreap rewards, but your alts should not be excluded from past rewards earned on other characters like Accolade bonuses or reputation (to some degree).

This question was posed to dstahl not long ago and it was said its not likely to happen. I think you to consider that if you want a different profession you either start over or buy character slots which is a revenue maker for STO either way. If I were in the biz of making this game I would want to increase revenue opportunities and not take them away.

Some people will refuse to pay for more slots just to start over with a new character however their would be people willing to pay for a respec. Making money from respec or character slots still results in making money and if any amount of money is made with this option it is better then not making money from not having the option.
