I don't really get it, seems to me that fleet modules are somewhat overpriced. Since it takes 4 fleet modules to buy a ship, you end up spending 2000 Zen. Why would I do this, when I could get a vesta ship for instance with a special console thingy for 2500 zen?
Or any other C-store ship since C-store ships come with unique consoles. So aren't they SUPER overpriced? Or am I not understanding something correctly?
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
Fleet ships and lockbox ships tend to have one extra console slot and a minor boost in stats over their C-store counterparts. It's nice, but not mandatory if you can't afford it.

Fleet ships & Z-Store ships are different variants of the starship class they're based on. Each has it's advantages & disadvantage. If you buy both, you can mix & match to create a
different set up all together. Some will say - a better/stronger/more powerfull ship.
In the end if you don't like the price don't buy the ship.
There's no way I will ever spend 2,000 Zen on a per-character unlock.
By making Fleet Ship Modules unbound items that can be sold, bought, traded, or gifted you don't need to spend 2,000 zen to get a fleet ship -- Cryptic just cares that someone does. You can buy them with energy credits on the exchange anytime you want, but Cryptic still makes the exact same amount of revenue ($20 USD).
I'm not sure how they're so expensive; getting the Fleet Credits is easy, and most ships requiring 4 modules cost 2,500 ZEN for the ship they're based on. So for 500 ZEN less you're trading a unique console for +10% hull and shields plus an extra console slot. Oh woe is me, such poor value for money!
Plus, if you have the original ship*, you only need one Fleet Module, so that's 500 ZEN to upgrade your ship that has the unique console with +10% hull and shields and plus one slot (all the easier to fit that universal console). Even if the Dilithium to ZEN rate were to hit rock-bottom (50 Dilithium for 1 ZEN) that's a measly 25,000 Dilithium to upgrade, or just over three days of Dilithium mining to get it for "free".
Personally I think the Fleet ships are a bargain; all that's stopping me right now is getting my fleet's shipyard to tier V first for the ship that I want. In the meantime my value gained for ZEN spent ratio on my current ship is only going up.
*Check on the wiki first, some ships don't currently have the discounted rate when upgrading to a Fleet ship, and of course if you're cruising around in a non-Retrofit or Refit ship then you probably didn't spend ZEN to get it anyway so will need the full number of modules.

There actually is a reason for this, when using the modules your making a more powerful version of the ship, if your using 4 modules its because you dont own the original ship. The original ship is about 2000 zen. If they priced the module any lower you would have no reason to get the ship in the first place, and instead just get a 'free' upgraded cstore ship for some fleet credits and about 20 million ec (which you can still do).
If you own the ship however you only need 1 fleet module, and thats about 5mil ec.

Question: I have the store defiant from a VA token from times long past. The c-store defiant is greyed out for me (since I already have it, but just not from the c-store). Does spending 2k zen for the fleet defiant unlocks the c-store version for other chars as well?
also considering you can actually earn zen points via playing the game and the opportunity to buy them off the exchange (mix both options) any player, especially the f2p, can afford a high end ship in a matter of weeks of playing. Those who have bought the c-store variant have the opportunity to ubgrade their favourite (more or less) ships for very little money or playtime.
so overprized? not really...just depends on your viewpoint
The system works great for long time owners of retrofits/refits, who only have to spend 5 million EC to get a Fleet version of their ship.
Oh boy...in case you didn't realize it 100% of fleet ship modules were originally obtained with zen. You may have gotten them via a middle man (the exchange), but Cryptic got it's real money from someone. If everyone decided to stop spending zen on them, the price on the exchange would skyrocket until there's none left for even 500 million EC.
So rather than call them fools you can give a big thank-you to making it even possible for the people who don't give real money.
I own most of the c-store ships, but do agree I wont spend zen for a per character unlock as I have 15 characters on my account. I do think the ship are not overpriced though for someone looking to obtain a high end ship on a free to play account as most only have one character on the account anyways.
I buy c-store ships with zen which are account wide unlocks. I just by fleet modules from the exchange for 4.5 million so as not to waste my zen. Lock box ships have nothing on fleet ships for the most part. You can buy many unique consoles as well from lock box items on the exchange. So I basically opened a few lock boxes get a ship sell it on the exchange for 100 million and use my energy credits to by up everything I want - fleet modules, unique weapons, consoles, doffs, etc. I can basically have fleet ships on everyone with the energy credits earned.

I bought a Fleet Patrol Escort..think I paid $10 of my own money (bought 2 off the exchange). I have 2 characters so I didn't care if it was an account unlock. My other character is not in a fleet and probably won't ever be so it really wasn't much of a buying point for me.
I like the fleet patrol escort you get +10% shields and hull and and extra engineering console slot. Then a universal BOFF slot. So it is really versatile. I wouldn't ever think of flying anything else with that character.
Like many have said in this thread, to each their own. I have plenty of money, Zen, and dilthium to buy any C-Store ship I want, but I find that tons of players buy them only for the consoles. Which, in my opinion, a good part of them are gimmicks (which have long cool down times)
This is really a great game that you really don't have to spend any money on if you don't want to. Just do the grind and get up the currency (EC, Dilth, ZEN) of your choice and buy what you want. While some think it is overpriced, others love the fact that it can all be free for a little work.

Indeed and I don't see why I should spend money on them when most c-store ships seem equal or better. (and they come with unique items!)
You're entitled to that opinion. Others disagree. Fortunately everyone has choice on whether or not to buy them.

This is personal choice that only you can make, just like everyone else.

Game Balance - Ship Size and Wingmates
Just buy modules off the exchange. I did that very thing earlier today to get my fleet Defiant.
Regardless, if they're not bound to character I guess it's not as big an issue as I thought.

I do agree they are expensive if you count how much one zen is worth to the ? or $ etc
2.5k is around ?17 I think, which is alot for a ship etc
