So, it looks like those that can tether to a mobile ISP can patch, start the game, get to the character screen, then disconnect and launch from the actual .exe file, if I am keeping up on all the posts correctly. So patching is the issue.
So it seems possible a route hasn't been pushed to the regular ISPs that has been sucessfully pushed to the mobile ISPs for getting to the patcher. Again, a rough guess.
gameclient.exe will still try to connect to the patcher so no, on DSL it will not work.

Firstly, I'm one of the "few" that cannot open the patcher, but before the servers went down, I was able to purchase a ton of Zen. When I purchased this Zen, it did not show up in my account as processing or anything -- like it had never happened.
So, I contact support -- I get a canned response that it is Paypal's fault. I call PayPal and the agent at PayPal insists I'm being scammed and that their systems are running as intended -- he also states that PWE has their money as the transaction shows clearly on PayPal's side. So, now to clarify the situation and to give PWE a chance to explain things, I call, I call, I call, I call some more... I've been calling since 20 mins ago and no one answers the phone during their normal business hours....
I am so inspired by trust in PWE right about now.....
I'm getting this exact problem as well, i bought 1,100 ZEN, and now it's not showing and the patcher isn't working as well for me  It's starting to make me really angry
No point in posting my Tracert results, they're identical to most of those already posted.
Why didn't someone at Cryptic think "Hang on, if the auto-updater should fail, we should have a manual update system so that users can download the patch files and run the patch locally"
Actually I got past the launcher update thingy once or twice on my many tries, but when I did i was stuck with a blank Launcher window "LOADING..." all the time

Oh lord, seems that the big USA has literary the biggest unreliable networks. Why doesn't PWE rent some very reliable servers in Amsterdam. Internet infrastructure in Europe... you really can trust the huge networks here :P
I was playing, yesterday, without any problems but now I can't login anymore. When I run STO, It opens a window named Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate, it says:
"Trying to update the launcher.
Please be patient.
Tried connecting 1 time."
It takes some minutes, then I get an error window " Patcher error", saying "The patchclient got a message while it was in a state with no response function."
I tried several times but somehow It doesnt update my game client.
Some mmorpg has a manual update patch, I wonder if STO has it too, if doesnt, it would be nice having it too.
It will avoid problems to players, specially just after an update, like now.
Best Regards.
PS: I already tested my Internet Connection, trhoughput, latency, everything is like yesterday, except my STO game.
from what I have heard it is in fact a problem on PayPal's part.
That is impossible... I'm at work right now -- we use PayPal -- and the transactions have been flowing into our system all day without issue (edit: nothing above normal that is).
Something about a problem transferring the data from PayPal's Servers to Perfect World Entertainment's servers. I did in fact speak to one of the Billing Rep's on the phone as well as get a ticket resolved regarding this issue and both of those said the exact same thing.
The only way this could be correct is if it is the same problem PWE is having with connections that is preventing the transfer of data -- at which rate, it is PWE's issue and they should own up to it, ethically speaking -- because now PayPal is calling them scammers, which is a harsh word in the business realm.
My next step is to contact PayPal and find out exactly what is going on. But if they say (as you claim) that we are being scammed, then I will be highly annoyed, because generally Perfect World Entertainment has been extraordinarily good at getting money issues taken care of.
Said NO to Arc. Gets punished by not being given a free outfit, free lobi, and free shuttle. Now forced to use Arc's site when trying to get to STO site. Still not rewards for beta testing the Arc website by force. Bravo Cryptic.
Just came back from the gym and still not being able to connect to STO....

I don't know about other MMOs and how deveolpers use to treat their customers (i don't really care tTBH), but this is really problematic here... i am really p***ed and absolutely not in the mood to read any lame excuse right now....
Devs, get it done or at least admit that you messed it up.
Not only that you completely twist Star Trek itself into something which doesn't even remotely resemble the IP, now you can't even grant a unproblematic acess to your game?
Anyway, we should get at least some kind of really GOOD compensation, like a free chimera or a temporal destroyer....
"...'With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured...the first thought forbidden...the first freedom denied--chains us all irrevocably.' ... The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. I fear that today--"

Its called tethering it uses your mobile data on your PC for internet access, its different to setup for most phone manufacturers, just did it with my iphone and its gotten into the game! albeit a little sluggish compared to my broadband connection...
 this worked for me (i'm currently in the character selection screen)
1 switched to my mobile phone connection
2 downloaded the patch and launched the client
3 in character selection window switched back to my home connection
4 got disconnected from the server
5 logged in again without closing the game
6 i'm in...:D

The published route idea seems plausible.

I'd agree on the published route.
Although having said that, doesn't explain the packets that DO get through on broadband.
They just didn't have the foresight. :l
If you don't know what you can do else, you seriously have a problem! SERIOUSLY!

That is impossible... I'm at work right now -- we use PayPal -- and the transactions have been flowing into our system all day without issue (edit: nothing above normal that is).
The only way this could be correct is if it is the same problem PWE is having with connections that is preventing the transfer of data -- at which rate, it is PWE's issue and they should own up to it, ethically speaking -- because now PayPal is calling them scammers, which is a harsh word in the business realm.
I'll say it now, I told you so...
I consider a day's wages to be a ton.

Anyway, we should get at least some kind of really GOOD compensation, like a free chimera or a temporal destroyer....
muwhahaha!
what phone?
