New ship explosions

wolfreywolfrey Member Posts: 0 Arc User
Hey All,

Not sure if this has been brought up in the past, but we really need some new ship explosions! The dull small explosion, then having the ship turn slightly for another much larger explosion was cool at first, but now it's just boring. I don't even care if a ship blows up anymore and I don't see it. We have seen several changes to the transporter beam out effect, but no changes to the explosions! :( The borg cube explosion is better, who doesn't like debris flying everywhere, but everything is specific to that type of vessel. You could just put in, say 5 different animations (including a crit kill like ground vaporization) and shuffle between them to make it more exciting. Also, it would be cool if the more a ship gets damaged they start losing stuff. Like if you get them down to 40%, they lose a warp nacell or something along those lines.

Nice idea..but theres more pressing issues to be honest

In a perfect world (sic) I'd like the explosions tied to the engine type:

Borg engine - Green plasma explosion, like the borg cube
Rom/Rem engine - a very short lived, non repelling grav well with the ship being swallowed by it
    Breen - Huge cryo explosion
    Standard - Normal explosion
Aegis - white photonic shockwave type ring (same radius as standard ship explosion) as the ship explodes
Maco - Jest a more flashy normal explosion
    Omega - Great big fireball
Khg - cloaks out and explodes unseen?

    that sort of thing

i like this idea but hope cryptic could do this without breaking the game

I was JUST thinking about this myself. Sure have explosions depending on faction or ship type, but also, perhaps have some that don't explode all the way, or possibly have the whole thing a burning twisting mess. Plus, having them explode the way they do, means instant headache for every carrier captain out there because they know that if the pets aren't out of the area pronto, they'll have to recast them all.

so yeah, give us some more variety in enemy defeats and/or fix pet AI :D

Not only that, I would like to see debris from destroyed ships after they have exploded. Bits of Saucers and Nacelles. Obviously part of a graphics setting, so low end users can switch it off.

Personally I'd rather see less ships exploding in general; it's mostly annoying and I'm not sure ships should be blowing up left and right anyway. I'd rather see most ships becoming drifting wrecks with glowing damage that goes dark just before they disappear (as if they'd just become undetectable due to no energy readings).

A ship should only really go critical fairly rarely, unless you're using abandon ship, in which case it could make a lot of sense to increase warp core explosion damage in order to make that ability something you might actually use as a big middle finger in PvP if you've used all your heals and are still going down.

Only really Borg ships should explode all the time as a drifting Borg ship is pretty much five minutes away from being dangerous again, so they need to be taken out entirely or risk them regenerating. It might be nice to see Borg ship explosions result in secondary detonations that completely disintegrate the ship; done steadily (so you're not multiplying into hundreds of on screen bits of debris). It's not really a big deal but I think it would make more sense than two huge chunks that suddenly disappear after a while.

Before any of this however they really need to fix the Borg gateway explosion; regardless of my visual settings the exploding pieces seem to appear half way up the gateway's position, rather than centred on where it was. They also completely obstruct targeting even when you can clearly see enemies through the gaps.

Having the debris hang around would be cool. The Borg cubes already do it, and it adds a sense of accomplishment to see their broken carcass floating in space. It might get a little haywire in a large battle like Starbase 24 or Starbase Defense, lots of space junk floating around that your GPU would have to deal with.
