I've come up with a new project and want to share it with you guys on the forums, hopefully getting some feedback and input on it as we go - and with a touch of luck sharing some interesting ideas for other people in my situation!
Background
I've been looking for a new toon to play for some time, however as I've got eight or nine toons already, and have played 'most' of the storyline for 'most' of them - doing the same again is getting a touch on the dull side.
I've also come to feel lots of threads of story in the typical STO plot are left hanging, or are simply sub-par compared to the most recent writing.
The Project
My aim is to take a new character through the game using the Foundry as my major method of advancing. My goal will be to create a series of missions that give myself, and other players, a full feeling of being in a conflict with the Klingon Defence Force, without removing the Star Trek feel from the game.
Whilst I will be predominantly be using Foundry Missions to advance I am not adverse to using Cryptic Missions that fit the theme, or strike me as interesting asides that my character may run across - think how the Dominion War ran in DS9 - it was the major focus, but Sisko did get caught up in other events as these series went on.
Events I plan to take part in at the moment include:
The Deep Space Nine Feature Episode Series - The 2409
The Deferi Feature Episode Series
The Special Task Forces.
What Now?
Well I want this to be a community project, with input from the forums helping shape what happens, and when. I'll be looking at this thread regularly for input and ideas for orders for my captain! I will update the second post in this thread with details about the missions I've played, and how they went for my captain, and update this first post with the mission for the week for you guys!
Mission One - Who Am I? Mission Two - Incoming Hail...
Until we hit level nine where the Investigate Officer Reports daily becomes available I'm going to stick to the standard STO Klingon War relevant missions. This will take us to roughly The 'Kuvah'Magh' I'm now looking for some good KDF/Federation conflict missions from the foundry to slot in after this stage. Suggestions and brief missions summaries please!
Mission 1 - Stranded in Space
Lieutenant M'Rell fresh in the captain's chair sets out on patrol when the ship receives a distress call from a Bolian freighter...
Mission 2 - Diplomatic Orders
Admiral Quinn hails the Cooper with a routine mission to transport a Vulcan ambassador to a monastery.
Mission 3 - Relics (Foundry Spotlight Mission)
Your ship receives a hail asking you to investigate the Klingon interest in a planet near the neutral zone. Without giving anything away this is a very well built mission, and makes a great lead in for a new captain, given your battlefield promotion.
Certain crew member's actions feel a bit odd, but if you play this one following your promotion to captain it makes sense really. One of the more trek missions I've seen so far, with a couple of threads tying to a logical end.
Mission 4 - First Cause, Then Effect (Foundry Spotlight Mission)
Your crew is tasked to investigate a missing Federation dignitary where they suspect foul play by the Klingons. Upon arrival things are much more complicated than they first appear.
Features some impressive foundry mechanics that make you go 'huh? How'd they do that...'
Mission 5 - The Syndicate Extraction (Foundry Spotlight Mission)
Your crew is sent to retrieve an intelligence operative who has been in deep cover investigating the connection between the Orions and the Klingon Empire.
Mission 6 - To Helna and Back
No mission starting at Risa can ever end badly right.... right Helna? The hapless ensign Helna gets wrapped up in a Klingon plot, but will her involvement save the day, or cause disaster?
Mission 7 - Massacare on Jassu 264
This mission sounds good on paper, a squad of Nausicaan pirates have swept over a small Tellarite mining operation. Your crew beam down to investigate and your ship is taken out of the picture by Nausicaan destroyers, sadly it turns out to be little more than a glorified grind, a shame as the plot concept had me thinking of the Siege of AR-52 (that's the number right?) in DS9 which was truly epic.
Mission 8 - A Light to Guide Us
A mission to save research data along the Klingon Neutral zone reveals a unique opportunity for you to end the Federation/Klingon War, but will you take it?
I would say before I go into any more suggestions about who your captain should be, really need to know more about what kinds of captains you already have. Since, have the fun is how the experience is for you, you want something unique to you. So what Species have you already played? What species from the series do you love and want to expand on? Since half the fun of this sound like a mild roleplaying element, it might be interesting to explore more on a particular species you might be interested in. Same with genders, which have you played with more?

Ok, this is a valid thought
I've got a few toons.
Tobar - a male Bajoran tactical captain who I rarely play, simply because he always felt a bit bland for a tactical captain - Kira made a militiant Bajoran look fun - it just wasn't.
Halora - a female Bolian tactical captain, I role play her as a time traveller who accidentally killed a Starfleet captain and took her place to preserve the timeline, she flies a variety of ships though 'mainly' a Wells class.
Sozuu - a Trill Engineer female, joined - flys a Gal-X - not much of a background to her but is fun to fly around with.
Rrul - a diplomatic Catian male - a science captain by trade and flies the Atrox - I don't really play him, but that's more lack of time than anything else to be honest. The atrox doesnt much fit my generally casual playstyle.
Gral - a male Tellarite science officer, role played as a tellarite (argumentative, abrupt) flies a Luna class starship and can be fun to CC with.
So there's some general thoughts on my captains, it's not the fullest detail but it gives you a rough concept. The captain will primarily played solo as I tend to find most Foundry missions benefit from solo play due to them being story rather than pew pew.
I would say that this belongs in Ten Forward.
I'm open to that thought It's an either of many - I could also debate Foundry discussion hehe.

Maybe a Pakled male named Bobo, who's Ferengi First Officer is up to all kinds of shenanigans, and is the real captain of the ship. Make it so he rewires control panels to do funny things to Captain Bobo, get a whole Colonel Klink/Hogan thing going on.
ok, in non-canon sources it was hinted that saavik was half romulan. Spock was half vulcan, and B'elanna was half klingon. I think the dual parentage thing really opens possibilities. a half rom having to fire on his own people? ditto for a half klingon? having to explore that "dark side" of their makeup to save the federation..
Just wanted to wish you good luck with this project.
The Deferi Feature Episode Series is a good choice I think.
*sneaks away*
Oi! Don't sneak away, watch and follow ;-) I'm going to need people's input for this lol.
So here's my main thoughts for new characters at the minute
T'Pell
A female Vulcan science officer, based roughly on the vulcan female in the character creator art work when you build a new science toon on the Fed side. She's a Federation idealist, still a great believe in the principles of exploration and seeking out new life and new civilizations. She's suffered in the past from Pa'nar Syndrome, causing her emotional controls to break down, she has received treatment since but it has left her open to exploring her emotions slightly more than most Vulcans.
Sarah White
Sarah is a Doctor by vocation, having initially trained with Starfleet Medical and served as a senior Doctor onboard the Enterprise-E. Although she'd never planned a career in the command track whilst serving on board the medical carrier Chicago the ship came under attack from a Klingon Bird of Prey which breached the bridge's hull in it's initial volley, and took out the ship's warp engines. As the highest ranking officer White took command of the vessel as it limped through the outskirts of Federation space. Upon arriving back at Deep Space K7 she was given permanent command of the ship and her crew.
Merl
A Caitian female who is equally adept as a field medic as she is a combat scientist. Part of a traditional large litter family on Cait she was the sole one to leave the planet for any length of time, dreaming of exploring the stars. She takes great pride in her ability to patch up her crewmates as they are injured on the battlefield. She can also manipulate the environment around her to catch her enemy off guard leaving them vulnerable to her more heavily armed colleagues.
Siyk
Siyk is a Rigellian male, an Engineer who has grown up playing in the engine rooms of Federation starships, from freighters through to the enormous Galaxy class cruisers. His parents, far from the spiritual people Rigelians are known for being were tech heads, living their lives always trying to squeeze every ounce of efficiency out of the ship. Siyk, whilst a master engineer, has recently become interested in his people's spiritual heritage and has started to explore this.
Three
A liberated Borg. Skilled in the art of immobilising and incapacitating his enemy through the use of engineering kits using the experience he retained from the collective. With little knowledge of his past he has decided to focus on his future and creating a galaxy where people can live safely.
Why these characters?
Simply put I have no female science officers, and no male engineers. Additionally these are all species I've not played before (with the exception of the Caitian who's always fun!) The caitian's feline instincts could be fun with the combination of science's perception boosting abilities and easy exposes, mixed with creative to make a nice healer.
Have just seen other people's responses - will read through them a bit more fully in the morning (it's late here!) keep 'em coming people. Mine are just my thoughts, nothing set in stone, though obvioiusly we'll be limited by what the character creator allows
I would say most likely Female. You have quite a few Male characters so going as female might give you a different perspective. Probably you female Vulcan Science officer if you are really into it or want to explore the vulcans. You have most of the other fun races already. :P
Here are my two Mains. Perhaps you would be interested in taking a similar approach?
My first character who is an idiot Trill Doctor. She is not very bright and cheated her way through Starfleet Medical. Likewise, I only used her with the Medic Kits but Leveled her without using any Skill Points. Once I had her at Max Level and played her for a while longer, I finally began to slowly give her the Skill Points under the guise that she happened to be the only viable candidate for Symbiote and was beginning to have its knowledge rub off on her.
***
My other Main Character is a Racist Engineer. Not just any Racist, but a Liberated Borg who hates Organics. I played her as mean and a general villain to Organic Races. She does not allow anyone on her crew that is one. There are only Borg, Holograms, Androids, and the like can be on her ship. She uses mechanical abilities such a Turrets, Mortars, and employs Combat Exocomps and Attack Hortas.
My biggest issue be caption by rank. So one misson trouble get rate I am going at.
Um....huh?
Ok, so I let my wife make the final call!
The finalists were:
My Vulcan Science Officer
My Caitian Science Officer
We also played with some dual heritage characters, but they all felt a bit forced.
Ultimately we've come down with the Caitian Science officer - I'm a little dissapointed I don't get to play a new engineer, I really enjoyed my Trill, but it's all good! And kind of the point of this little experiment.
I'm going to roll a character up tonight (pictures to follow when the Gateway's back online)
The Vulcan science officer will be one of the initial bridge officers, and some of the other ideas here will round out the initial crew.
I'm going to start out in the NX Light Escort, I fancy the oberth, but to be honest this will probably be my last toonand I don't find the console to be that exciting that I'll use it in place of my red matter capacitor.
The first mission that she plays through will be the SS Azura 'Stranded in Space' mission. I always feel it's a good start to the war storyline and worthy of a play with any new character. I'll report back with the captain's logs in a few hours!
Not sure if you're soliciting input for Foundry missions to play, but there are a few Klingon-related missions I think you should consider; ajstoner's "Resolution" series, and alimac30's "City of the Polmar Ree."

I kind of am, but I'm not quite there yet
Anyone know if the Odyssey (fleet) uniforms clip on Caitian necks? I've been trying to find a uniform that doesn't, but to no success. ANy thoughts?
Completed my first mission last night. It's only stranded in space, but I got it all FRAPSed and just need to get it uploaded to Youtube, but as it's over 15 minutes it's proving tricky. Anyone got any advice? FRAPS produces huge files so it's taking forever

No easy answer to that, but I could direct you to where to start perhaps.
Thanks for the help. A bit of FRAPs, a bit of Virtual Dub and a bit of handbrake seem to ahve worked.
I'm uploading my second video as I type. See the original posts or here for more http://youtu.be/wTXhcOac3g8
Hey, I looked at your videos and hm.. I think you overshrunk it (is there such a thing?).
Video #2 also had very low sound and Video #1 was better.
Since it was I that gave you that link to videohelp I now feel a responsibility to try help you improve, though there are others on STO forums that probably could give better help.
Have you read through the help pages and forums at YouTube? There seems to be alot of good advices there.
My next advice would be to not shrink them that much, make them .mp4. Upload and pay YouTube for more account size, or perhaps make several accounts with 1 episode in each.
Yeah the 2nd video has definitely processed less well than I hoped. Looked fine before upload. It's a bit of experimentation on encoding time vs upload time vs quality.
My aim is to have it 'right' by level eight when I start playing foundry missions. I'm going to try again tonight and see if I get better results. I didn't know YouTube had an account size limit.
One Foundry Mission I'd suggest playing (for when you get to that point) is 'Hunt for the Daq'Duj'. Or, as I sometimes like to call it, 'The Hunt for Red October: Star Trek Edition'.
Seriously, the guy who authored that mission HAD to be inspired by 'Hunt for Red October' when making it, and it clearly fits in the theme of the Klingon-Federation War. I'd definitely recommend it when the time comes.
NOTE: For those of you who don't know what 'Hunt for Red October' is, it's a novel by Tom Clancy which got turned into a VERY GOOD movie by Paramount Studios.
I've updated the first page to include a list of foundry episodes i'm going to try and play.
I've been playing some of the Cryptic missions to try and work out my FRAPS issues, I seem to get my microphone input far far too low.I might upload these at some point soon, but I'll have it cracked for when I hit the Foundry missions hopefully.
