Roles?

I can't figure out exactly what I'm losing/gaining from the different roles.

I usually run in Balanced...but I recently tried out the Attack role.

I gain nearly double the DPS from the Weapon Performance increase and my Shield Performance stays the same as it was in Balanced.

However, I can't figure out what exactly I'm losing from the decrease in Engine and Auxiliary Performance.

might help us if we knew what ship, engines, deflectors, shields and weapons you are using. And what you are describing is actually called Power Settings, not roles.

    To be quick about it...

Weapons affect DPS - base tooltip DPS at 50, double DPS at 100, 250% baseline at 125...
Shields affect regeneration rate and innate shield resist, again, baseline / double / 250%...
Engines are pretty much speed, speed, speed. Of course, higher speed gets you to/from a fight quicker and gives defense.
Aux fuels many science powers, carrier hangars, and the Auxiliary Power to <blank> engineering power line. I think it works on the same base/double/250% that the other "pools" run on, but I haven't tested it immensely...

Now, as an escort, you can (and most likely should) run 100/50/25/25 (attack profile) unless you're trying to tank (then run shield profile 50/100/25/25) or you're more a high-speed dogfighter that's trying to run max evades at max speed, who tend to run 100/25/50/25 - unless they find the "sweet spot" that allows 100% throttle to hit the defense cap, then they put the excess back into shields...

Cruisers, much the same, though a handful of them tend to run the shield profile more often and the odds of a cruiser hitting the defense-sweet spot (and/or being able to actually do anything at that speed besides drive-by-shootings) means many don't focus a ton on the engines...

Sciences are very complicated, you'll want both weapons power and aux to fuel DPS and science powers - When I'm not in my Vesta (with Aux cannons), I tend to run a 90/25/25/60, yeah, my DPS suffers some since I hit 124 weapons at 90, so I don't quite reach that 250% and have zero "buffer" for drains to pull from (if you "overcap", you don't see/get any extra damage from the high power, but it still is there to be pulled away from a weapon drain - say you get up to 135 weapons, first shot is calculated at 125 power, but the -10 drain brings the weapons power to 125, so the second shot is also calculated at max strength.), but at the same time I get a hair extra damage from my science powers which I need to compensate for the lack of cannons and a whole weapons slot...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Now I just read the sticky thread about ship power and it says you can use custom settings.

Would running power at 80/50/35/35 be worth it?

Depends on a number of factors, such as ship, skills, goals, etc.

Though, my line of thought tells me "most likely no". To wit:

    1. Weapon power - say you have a 100 damage turret. At 100 power, this turret does 200 damage per shot. At 80 power, you only do 160 (-40 damage). Now remember, this is per weapon, so assuming a 7 turret escort, you're doing -280 per full volley. That, and no high-end weapon runs "baseline" 100 damage, so you're giving up 300+ damage per volley at the "reduced" weapon power setting...

    With that in mind:

    2. Is the +10 engine power giving you a significant boost to your speed - both in maneuvers (quicker turns, getting to next battle quicker, escaping damage ranges quicker) and the corresponding increase in defensiveness worth the minimum of -20 damage per gun? This is possible, but not extremely highly likely (unless you're in an escort and specced your in-system impulse speeds up tremendously).

    3. With the Aux, other than the slight increase to cloaked ship detection (which is not worth the damage loss), do you have and use a significant amount of aux-related abilities to "make up" for the lost damage? As a Science captain, I'd be fairly tempted to say "most probably not" unless you're in a Sci ship with, say, GW I and III, 2 of CPB/PSW/TBR, and HE / TB loaded on a Lt Cmdr and Cmdr Sci slots, and are cycling them at every possible opportunity to fire them. And then, is the extra damage this pile of powers is doing as much as the sacrificed damage per overall volley? Without loading this combo of powers myself to crunch the numbers, again, I'd say "most likely not".

Therefore, IMO at least, you'd be better served running 100/50/25/25 or running an slightly less conventional 100/35/35/30 type-scheme (assuming that Aux is rarely used) if you need to balance out your ship's power levels some...

    Thank you for the info.

I'm thinking I will just stick with the 100/50/25/25 and build around that.

I'm using the Thunderchild Heavy Escort Refit right now and plan to pick up the Armitage Heavy Escort Carrier.

I currently equip a Torpedo, Cannon, Dual Heavy Cannon...with two turrets in the aft.

Depends on what captain/ship/BOff abilities you are using. Just try it and see for yourself. It costs nothing and can quickly be changed.

I ended up going with 75/75/25/25...for the extra shield strength.

I didn't realize that weapon power did not effect torpedo damage...so I'm not really losing that much dps from the drop in weapon power.

You may be losing more than you think with the power drain, check it with a combat log parse. You'll find links to 2 different parsers in this thread: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=268735

There are also instructions on how to use the first one in this thread, although the download links are dead: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=255981
