Whats the deal with Bullying

I have a problem.
Got into an argument with some players in Otha (as happens) and for no good reason at all (the way I was playing) they started sending me personal insults(Trolling me). And then things got even worse when I started to send them insults back! It appears they feel they can insult me but not me them! Now they are better PvPers than I (they have been playing the game longer).

But what is making me upset is that even though I know that it's a PvP zone (although now I mostly go there for the mission). Whenever these groups of players are there they will attack me usually as a group, then start to spawn camp me & then keep doing it until I leave! And telling me I have to leave!

Often I'm there before them and they come and start doing this to me. So it's not even like I get the opportunity to develop my PvP as they simply dont want to me to play there! Or I'm set upon by 2 or 3 players!

But whats most dissapointing is that I have reported this behaviour.. And the message I get from this company is that the above is acceptable! Some of them have even made racially charged comments towards my charracter. (This was in front of one of my friends) who is also black.

I read another thread that went into a way of blocking these people out completly. So they wouldnt know I was there or vice versa. But I feel that this is getting beyond a game & is unacceptable!

Racism is against the TOS. Report the player in question.

If it's an issue, you can set yourself to not show up on searches of online players or players in a zone in the Social menu (default key: O, if I recall correctly). You can also ignore players by typing /ignore @thatplayershandle in your main chat box.

The best way to avoid arguments in Otha (and Kerrat, for that matter) is not to participate in them. The best way to not get trolled is to act like you don't care when you do get trolled.

Cryptic is not going to help you. I have never seen anyone get punished for any kind of behavior towards other players, including things far worse than a little griefing. If you want any kind of meaningful response, I suggest finding out (some other way than by asking the people pushing you around) who the responsible players' fleet leader is, and asking him if he will do anything about it.

People have been banned for harassment.

One notable troll was banned recently.

I know I should have at the time. But any minority (even if your white living in Africa) will understand what I mean by the delayed reaction...

I guess you could call it mild shock, I have experienced racism in NWN but it almost slipped past me on this occasion. It was just thinking about when I just realised I have taken A LOT of greif from these people.. far more than I could give them (They outnumber me)

The wider point to be made is, if you have a game where bullying is tolerated. Then you cannot be surprised if other undesirable characteristics of human nature creep into the game.

Such as sexism, homaphobia and all the other nice things!

I'm all for a bit of trash talking. It's just unfortunate when things escalate and degrade into the kind of nonsense. There's just something about the Internet that can turn normal folk into super douches.

I know what you mean. But that only works when both parties are taking part in it. When it started I actually stopped playing and asked them "Why are you Trolling me?". They carried on, so I started Trolling them!(much better than they trolled me). Which made them even more angry!

I think it has a lot to do with maturity.
And age has nothing to do with that sadly

If its generic trash talk then i'm all for it. This is PVP, sir!

If it really is rather bad, and they're being racist then search their fleet, either find their website and enquire the name of the fleet leader, or just take a wild guess based on the names that appear.

Feel free to link him/her this thread.

Identify their fleet and contact the leaders informing them that some people are bringing them into disrepute

I'm enouraged by the positive feedback! And I am all for banter as it can make PvP engagements mean more! And even though I only get 1 kill out of 20 deaths ATM it still feels sweet & it's worth the reaction I get from them.

But there has to be a time when enough is enough. Like I said I accept it's a PvP zone. But things like spawn camping (solved by random regional spawning), especially when I was there first, Racism, obviously. Is beyond the point where you can say it's part of the game!
Even if your asking to be left alone or at the very least not to be verbally abused! That should be respected!

I know who these players are & I can link them here... only one of them was vocal when he saw the race of my toon.. Although I'm sure it was a matter for conversation amoungst them.

So I'll keep what you say in mind & may post an update here if I need to. Hopefully a few will be reading this and that will be enough! And to be honest I dont really want to do that as it seems... immature?!

In fact I didnt even want to air this 'dirty laundry' publicly here on the forums..
But what else can I do? I reported them.. I asked them... So what now give them what they want & stop going to Otha?
    Or stop playing the game?

Jugding from my own experience in this game I'd have to say that this company shows little to no willingness to penalize racist incidents. Maybe they think racism is just a trivial offense. Or they are just incompentent.

I can totally understand your frustration.

Some people are immature, as with life in modern day society age doesn't factor into maturity or conscious development, best to just put them on ignore and move on. Unless you want to spend the time telling them so. Investing energy in returning the insults however is pointless.

This is pretty much true with most of life, and most things that come at you.

I would like to formally apologize to you on behalf or the pvp community and the immature individuals that said those things. It's uncalled for and disapproved of by 9/10th of the "real" pvp community. If it just so happens to be a member of my fleet please let me know so I can deal with it accordingly.

My personal favorite are the glass-egos who pre-ignore you and then send trash-talk PM's so you can't answer back. That's when when I get to copy and paste their PM in zone and then respond in zone to the amusement of others.

Doing that is the only reason i even use OPVP anymore!

durranosgood, have you considered playing with some friends? Idiots are less likely to single you out if there's a good o' fashioned posse behind you. Hang around the OrganizedPVP channel some time and step into a pugmade!

Unfortunately, individuals are emboldened by the anonymity of the game and the internet as a whole. Perfect World/Cryptic should have a ZERO tolerance policy that is enforced and not just lip service written into their terms of service.

As others have said, ignore the bad ones, get better, play with friends and smile while they are exploding.

    Best of Luck!

Hey OP, our fleet responds to reports of spawn camping and has kicked these bullys off the spawn many times. You are not the only one they harrass. Take a screen shot of any racial slurs, I always do. Pasting chat can be altered so is not real proof.

I just want to say thanks to all (we can spot the adults from the children). But whats surprised me is the number of people that have mentioned problems with the same players in the same place to me since I made this post.

It seems they are known for this!

Although I do agree that ignoring these kind of ppl may work sometimes, if the problem persists the company who distributes and owns the rights to an environment/game should legally be obligated to handle this situation or risk prosecution themselves. Sounds harsh, I know, but inevitably STO is an online community and culture. Given that this is in fact STAR TREK of all things there should be a ZERO tolerance policy on said behaviour! These individuals should be banned from the game entirely for being racist!

Cyberbulling has become an epidemic and one that needs to be addressed by the community on whole. I think the names of these individuals should be posted to 1) shame them and 2) give us all a heads up as to who to ignore and avoid via the in-game tools. I have heard and seen other players behave terribly against others and its uncalled for. This is, after all, a game. That being said, if you ever need an extra ship let me know.... I am always up for hunting bullies. ;)

There are countries (Germany for instance) where the service provider/host (in this case, Cryptic) can be actually held accountable. Unfortunatly, in the U.S. it does not seem to be case.

Racism is wrong. There is no disputing that fact.

Though how are they to punish it when it happens and at what point does it start?

The first incident? The fiftieth? How do can they be sure after the fact that it was racist?
    Not some sad mistake.

I think thats why we do not see any decisive movement on these incidents, simply becuase PWE or Cryptics legal team may not have the experience..

Personaly I say fight back the best you can and do not take the words of idiots whpm think skin color actual means ypur not of the human race.
Pity them instead for they will never grow beyond thier mindset.

I am aware of a single player who has used racial epithets in zone. While I have no direct knowledge of Cryptic's response, his manifold alternate accounts suggest he has been punished in some way.

Several points need to be made, however, with regard to the events and climate described by the OP. All too often, players arrive on Otha expecting to complete the mission and be on their way with no opposition whatsoever. It's an open PvP zone, and competition -- within each faction as well as red versus blue -- is an integral part of the challenge.

There are many ways of successfully managing this situation. Immediately hurling insults and profanities at players -- demanding your right to complete the mission unmolested -- are not among them. Most players will leave you alone if you ask nicely. A bit of diplomacy accompanied by a a dose of humility goes a long way. Heck, if you're truly hapless or just really polite, many people will help you to complete the mission. I've gone so far as to give people better weapons or armor when it was obvious they really needed them.

As for camping: Yes, some players do it. Personally, I abhor it. If, however, you immediately fire as you are respawning, most players will return fire and not regard it as camping. I happen to agree with them.

Any spawn is neutral territory, and respawning players should have a moment to switch weapons, devise a new tactic, or just catch their breath. Neutrality, though, has its limits. If you're on the spawn and you take hostile action...well, expect to be repaid in kind ;)
