The "I am happy with how STO is progressing" thread

trahltrahl Member Posts: 0 Arc User
It gets really old hearing people whine sometimes, but I still find a lot of things in STO to be very well done and I don't think the dev staff gets enough support themselves.

Everyone should be well aware that happy devs are encouraged, so even if you have to struggle a little bit, say something nice.
The success of this thread, btw, will be measured in its post count so any following flame war will be a further measurement of how much we appreciate whats been done.

I'll start:
I'm really pleased with the reputation system. It makes so much more sense than that random drop stuff from before. My only regret is that I wasn't born into the system, but if I ever start up another toon, the reputation system will be great for me.

Also I'm a big fan of the space battle system. It's complex enough to make going fast and mashing the fire button unprofitable in the face of strategy. But its simple enough that using the system profitably is something everyone can do with moderate work.

Now go!

I like the Tau Dawa patrol missions. It is a bit like you have a half hour mission, but you are able to do it in 5 minute portions.

I also like the new changes to the Foundry rewards. It is good to be able to do a couple in a row, and not feel compelled to wait to do stuff because of the mission timer.

I actually just went to Risa for the first time and liked it a lot as well. It is much bigger than I thought it would be, and the fact that there are no missions there makes a lot of sense. I would highly encourage going there and just wandering around. It is rare for games to have such a relaxing aspect in them that works well.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

As a fan of the old Starfleet Command series, I have to say the space combat is probably my favorite aspect of the game. I'd like to see some new/expanded weapon types(continuous beams that 'warm up' over time, pulse/rapid fire beams, artillery cannons, Rapid Fire Missiles and Bioneural Warheads as full-fledged weapon types, etc.), but I have generally been quite pleased with how each release seems to bring a bit more to the table each time.

While the new upgrade prices have outright killed the progression of crews on all of my characters, I love the Duty Officer system and can still remember how happy I was when I saw it added to the game. It really helps to give the sense that you're responsible for an entire crew. Really hopefully there will be more integration between doffs, boffs, and ship interiors in the future.

I like the fact that some Devs are willing to sit down and listen to the good ideas, even the outlandish ones, and point out what has merit, and what's just plain stupid.

Oh, that reminds me - I was.. impressed.. with how upfront and down-to-earth the last/December's Ask Cryptic was. A lot of hard questions with honest answers.

    Kudos and Thank You.

More big picture, the things that I like and basically play the game for are

    1) space combat, which is the best part of the game

    2) exchange/money making, which is fairly well done in this game

    3) Duty officer system, which is excellent complement to the other more time and attention intensive parts of the game. The Duty officer system is also extremely good for the Star Trek related nature of the game. It adds an extra layer of immersion that I am off doing whatever, and I get reports in from other officers on their missions, and send other officers on various missions etc. I would love to see a greater variety of Duty Officer missions, even if it is just flavor based as opposed to actual variety. For instance, having 20 different texts for the radiation sample scan mission would be pretty cool. Similarly striking fugitive networks at _________, with the blank being one of a several places would also be pretty cool. I dont know how the coding is for the doff missions, so it might be more work than benefit, but it would help add extra layers of immersion, and really make the game feel like a Star Trek universe. The Diplomatic Missions for the Explore New Worlds stuff are good with this, as there are a lot of different planets and species, and several different reasons why they need whatever they are asking for. It is all the same mission, but it has a lot of replayability because of this. For me, it doesnt feel like a grind.

Oh yes, I love the new foundry rewards. I'm totally okay with losing the quickies because I don't feel they're necessary to make officer reports worth it.

While I cannot say that I'm happy with the way STO is going - even heartily disagreeing with some of the things said in this said (headscratchers to be sure) - there is little doubt that I would not be here if there were not aspects of the game which are extremely fun.

S7 originally had me leaning into the negative, and while there are definite issues out there - the devs are responding much quicker to various new issues than they have to issues in the past. Sure, some old things were introduced, but they were also relatively quickly fixed.

Even with all the issues, I would say that there at least appears to be a better sense of having a direction and the manpower to get there. So, even if there are things I do not like - thus leaving me not happy - I can see where the game might actually have a future... and with that, perhaps I'll adjust.

I wouldn't have said that earlier in the year... so yes, it is appreciated that they are putting the effort into the game - definitely appreciated - and time will tell if the momentum can be carried...

    ...here's hoping that it can.

I have always enjoyed the duty officer system. It's a game in a game that I can play even if I only have a few minutes. I like the way STFs were updated. I like the reputation system- especially as a fix for the STF gear lottery.

I'm not really an MMO player, so I'd never joined a guild before. But, with the fleet system I ended up finding a really good group and have enjoyed working together on projects.

So far I like the STO Gateway, even though it doesn't really do anything yet. Although, I kinda wish the crew picks were bigger and I could see armor on my characters.

I like the way story elements were integrated into the Romulan reputation system. I hope they do more small story missions like this. It's not the same as a featured episode series, but it's done in a way that I don't miss featured episodes.

Easier to get Dil. More reasons to play the Foundry. Pretty new map to run around in. Loss of the clickes made the speculators stop puffing up Zen prices.

Much better than S6's group vanity hat project.

Firstly I'd like to say that it's unfair to claim people who have issues with the game are "whining". Considering the number of things "whining" has gotten fixed, I think we'd need more if anything, at least to get the devs to listen to us more.

Secondly, while I also can't say I'm happy with STO as it is, I'll certainly say it is progressing. Things are moving forward, at least.

As for what I like, I really like the change to Investigate Officer Reports. Making it only 1 mission and repeatable every 30 minutes is a far better form for it. That actually solves what the Devs had been wanting all along, which is people playing more Foundry missions. People are happy to work for their reward when it's not tedious and infrequent. Side note: I highly recommend the "Battleship Royal Rumble" mission. It's a fun diversion for when you wanna just hop into space and blow stuff up.

I also really like them bringing plasma back to being more viable, and I like the consoles that add plasma procs to other weapons.

I also like the direction the game is moving in. I love the fleet system, and the personal reputation systems. Also love the DOFF system.

Space combat is great, and I think the ground combat is underrated.

Still a lot more that can be added, but it's improved a ton over the years, and is a lot of fun to play.

I really, really like the doff system. I am sad about the addition of excessive cost to upgrade my guys, but that doesn't kill all the fun of it. It's the one thing that actually makes me feel like my character is an admiral/general - many of these missions are way above a captain's paygrade.

Space combat is almost ideal for this sort of game. Ground combat is also pretty cool, even without shooter mode.

New Foundry wrapper really is a big step forward for the game, both in my enjoyment and in promoting the Foundry, which seems to have been a goal for the devs for a long time.

I like starships. This game has them. :) And keeps getting more.

Not to say that these things couldn't use improvements, but they are the things I like about the game, and keep bringing me back despite my many, many complaints.

as said in another thread, i am very happy with STO and where it is going.
the "monetizing everything" claim does not hold, because you really can earn everything ingame.

The economy is very well thought through.

i love the DOFF system, the reputations, and the fleet system, which would need some adjustments, but it is a good start.

i really, really LOVE the space combat, while ground is also nice. The BOFFs add to the immersion too.. The SWTOR copied the BOFF system in a way, and enhanced it, perhaps STO should work a bit in that direction too. To add some personality to the BOFFs.

S7 is great, the only downside are Fleet Marks. The new system and missions are nice, the Red Alert is still bugged as far as i know. The highlight of S7 are for me the Romulan civilian uniforms. Just kudos for that!

Foundry + Officer Reports change is very welcome, although it is a little chaotic now, and there should be a search option for missions which count towards the mission completion.

What the game IMHO needs and the devs should concentrate in future updates are
    - more factions
    - exploration and crafting revamp
    - PVP systems - the space combat is IDEAL for PVP. STO could be a PVP'ers heaven!
    - foundry maps and Starbases usable for space and ground PVP

After all these years and after trying another games, STO stays the MMO i am daily logging in. Thank you, Cryptic for working on it, and you should know, you will NEVER EVER get to work on a franchise this big with such a loyal fans, as you are now..

Thank you for everything and good luck in 2013, 2014, ..... :D

I like the F2P model, which allows me to choose when i want to pay and when i want to play to get my stuff. I guess it's a significant part of why i'm still here.

I also like when they make efforts to correct quality of life bugs, the non critical ones but very boring ones requiring silly workarounds.

I like the reputation rewards missions on new romulus. They're just fine.

I also love mine trap, even if it's hard to find a decent group to play it.

But there are also some drawbacks: many bugs that will likely never get fixed. The constant focus on system updates, backed by poor content (aka starbases and S6 missions).

On my whishlist, there's more commitment on controversial issues. To get a genuine "trek feeling", there's a huge lack of ethics in this game. TOS has the first interracial kiss. TNG was all about philosophy, progress, made capitalism ridiculous (ferengis), they weren't afraid to buid many episodes around harsh concepts such as ****, torture, violence, greed, DS9 even had a TRIBBLE kiss. :D There's nothing like that in STO, and i know it's not likely to happen but it would also be a huge win if the dev team realized that.

How it's progressing, as in the state or direction of changes ?

Well I think the quantity of new content has topped my expectations while I've been here, especially for a f2p game.
Number of new ships and new maps have been a lot I think.

Then they said the denture zone on new rom was the first time they tried to create something like that which would seem to suggest they aren't afraid to take at least some risk.

Just like the reputation system is a new path and they seem to be actually creating changes to the game and not just superficial stuff either.

Mostly I was really surprised they listened to us about the reputation system and came out and compromised both turning dil cost to giving us dil for it and heavily reducing the timers.

Right on top of season 7 we got the christmas event which I thought was really generous from what you read here and there it seems they have a lot planned so for sure the amount of content they just hand out in a f2p game is off the scale.

I'm very happy with the winter event, It was a great holiday present from Cryptic being able to EARN a FREE ship at this time of year rather than have to throw a ton of money at a chance at one.
Taking this little break from pushing new boxes during the holidays and offering something for free was a great idea and dare I say, in the true spirit of giving.

I'm VERY happy with the way the new inspect officer reports works now. I feel I can start enjoying the foundry now and all those talented author's works, while getting something needed for character progression and fleet projects. Playing foundry missions now feel rewarding and I would like to see this expanded and continued.
It also gives us something FRESH to get that much appreciated added dilithium with.

All in all, I'm looking forward for these trends to continue !

I'm even looking forward to the next lock box event now that I'm enjoying the game more.

Infact, I enjoyed the timeships lock box better than the previous ones and hope Cryptic keeps improving them.

I've been enjoying the Vesta, and look forward to more C store ships and the ambassador.

I really like the changes they've made to the Winter event. Last year, the event was frankly a bit boring. All you could do was the race pretty much.. and it was rather dull. The new version, I find I'm constantly running between setting up doff missions, running the main race, running the pvp races, fighting off snowmen, and searching the snowball piles for goodies. It's a constant sense of running.. and before I know it, I've spent 2 hours logged in.

The reason I play STO is simple: Space Combat is absolutely fantastic. I never felt this thrill in any MMO before (which is also the reason I never played another one for more than a week, they all seemed kinda dull to me in the end), especially in PvP.

Downsides are all these bugs which plague STO and unfinished work (Romulan BOffs for example ...), but I hope some of these things get sorted out in the next weeks.

The only disagreement I have is that its thought out for the federation side but they don't seem to be doing much for the KDF side its more or less being able to play federation content as a member of the Klingon Empire. If they had done new romulus where it was a matter of helping the romulans and the colony that used to be the Romulan prison that brought all the klingons and romulans and their descendants helping build new romulus I could see how the Klingon Empire would be into helping build this up but the Empire just doesn't feel like there is any justification why the Klingon Empire would be there doing the exact same thing the federation is doing.

i'm used to rep grinds and i wasn't in STO before ther ewas no rep grinds.

the fact that there is a rep grind now gives me more purpose than before. because i was a little worried what i can shoot for without an actual target in front of me.

now that the rep grind is in place its easier to see my play time pay off at some point.

... I'm happy with how STO is progressing too. Space combat and the way that the Devs will listen to, consider and ACT ON feedback are what got me to buy a LTS.

When season 7 hit I smelled an EvE Moniclegate coming, but the Devs ACTUALLY LISTENED and made constructive changes based on valid points raised by the player base.

Trolls can go back and hide under their bridges for all I care... while everything isn't perfect, it is certainly not as bad as most of the QQers make it out to be.

Gotta say my favorite things about STO have been, and probably always will be about the ships. I've always loved the ship designs in Star Trek and STO has let me customize, fly, and do space combat in some of my favorite ships (Defiant & Prometheus).

I like the changes made to the Investigate Reports mission for the foundry. Back when the 'clickies' were around it felt like a chore, now I can grab a ringside seat at a series of battleship brawls and either watch, or just shoot the ever living daylights out of whatever's looks at me funny. It's great stress relief for me.

Building starbases is also a little bit of fun, now that fleet marks are earnable again for me (I despise ground combat missions, and the fleet space missions invariably went long and usually got screwed up). I've always enjoyed building things, and I'm hoping I can look forward to customization options for fleet starbases at some point (I swear I'll make a Death Star styled sphere, paint it bright pink and call it the Really Mean Orb }BD ).

I like that the Devs actually communicate instead of hiding behind a wall of silence.

While I realize that many of the forumites are long-time vets who lost a lot of dilithium with the s7 changes, I was one of the people dstahl was talking about when he said that the average player only refines 13k/week. The changes have pushed me closer to 5k/day now. I've still never managed to max out but I'm closer and I haven't changed anything, I just get more rewards for the same activities.

Similarly the foundry changes have been awesome. I only learned about the 1-click mission literally one day before the change so it's no loss to me. But I had been running foundry missions for the daily reward. Getting fleet merits and only needing 1/3 the effort has been a huge boon to me and both my fleets. Especially the smaller klingon one.

I love that the foundry has a tip jar. I always wonder if makers read the reviews, and sometimes I feel that after a certain number of reviews the stars don't shift anymore so my vote is meaningless. But being able to drop some dilithium for the maker of a mission I enjoyed is awesome. I know they will appreciate it and they will know someone out there had fun with their work.

I am glad there is a dilithium exchange at all. Having played many games without such, I do truly see it as a win-win-win. Those with time but no money can buy zen items. Those with money can buy dilithium items. and both actions bring more money to the game for more development. Sure PWE may have had greedy motives, but the fact is the exchange has enriched the game experience for many.

I like that in general the devs are smart about what is and isn't bound and what is and isn't an account-wide unlock. While I do wish that purchased costumes were more useable between factions, and that the winter event costumes were account-wide unlocks, I do like that my steam bundle was not just one character one time and that I can buy some good ships on the auctionhouse, and that I can sell some of my extra Doffs and crafted gear. I hate those games where you have to grind crafting skills for every alt because the best crafted gear is bind on pickup.

I'm very glad that the game feels like Trek. It's not just spaceships. It's not just ground. It's not just combat. This is variety, and it has purpose, and it really captures what I like about the show. Far more than any D&D game or Star Wars game or any other inspired by a movie/book/whatever.

I may have my gripes about some details, but those things above I enjoy greatly.

When I found out Star Trek online was being produced back in like 2004 I was super excited, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Then when it came out I played for awhile and well wasn't as excited because honestly there was a lot of room for improvement. So I stopped playing for about a year and waited till I could get a better computer. Then I started playing again after the 1 year anniversary, right after they made the new ESD... and I was like wow this game is SO MUCH Better, and after 2 more years it has improved and grown by leaps and bounds and is continuing to improve beyond anything I thought it would.

Another thing I'm not sure people realize but this game is really two games in one. There's the space combat and the ground portion. Space combat has always been awesome, and they've made really good changes to bring the ground combat on par with space.

    My favorite things -

STF's - challenging and fun, although some are better than others.
The Foundry - probably the best attention to the game ever! Great content!
Ships - The ships I've always wanted to fly in the Star Trek Universe

Things I'm looking forward to -
The STO Gateway - cant' wait until I can send doff's on mission when I'm on my lunch break or from my iPad :D
Interior improvements - Interior customization will be nice as well as mini-games on my ship, I was really happy when they added Doff missions on the interior of my ship.
Foundry improvement - looking for to more assets and the ability to do branching story lines would be EPIC.

Overall AWESOME improvements over the last few seasons in STO, looking forward to Season 8 and beyond!!!
Thank you Dev team for the best Star Trek/MMO EVER!!!!!

Could there be things that need to be fixed... sure, what software doesn't...

    But I love

    - space combat
    - ground combat
    - the interjection of various stories and cameos form the series.
    - the Duty Office system
    - Star Bases
    - the ability to earn most everything in game
