The STFs started out as super-long missions with both ground and space components. When they were remastered, they were split into separate ground and space missions that last around 15-20 minutes each. An Elite version was added as well.
While the STFs are now much less grindy, I think the separate versions kind of sacrifice the story of the missions. Do you think they should re-merge the ground and space missions to fix this? This would presumably make each STF around 30-40 minutes long. And of course they'd have to double the rewards.
Just a thought from someone experiencing the STFs for the first time.

No. Ground combat is horrible. Im already forced to do too much of it.

No, IMO it's not the best idea to re-merge the STF's, the STF's before they were split took much longer than 30 or 40 minutes to complete, even if the team was a good one. At least that was my experience when the fleet I was in ran them, the Cure took about one and a half to 2 hours to complete, even though the team was a good one with an experienced leader and good followers.
That and I have more of a preference for Space Combat ATM

What I mean is, merge the ground and space STFs as they are now. Since the individual ones as they are now take 15 minutes each, combined it would by 30 minutes.
But I get what you mean about preferring space combat. I think most of us do.

Yeah, sorry, I only ever completed the ground part of Khitomer, the others always had people who left in frustration or whined because they, the 1337 veteran brigade had to explain the strategy to someone. Merging them again would make anything but Khitomer completely unplayable.

The only way I could get behind this is if they add the old STFs to the game not replace them. With some minor modifications that were added to the current STFs and close it behind the Episode replay system and maybe reintroduce their old loot of the Borg set. So you can either do these STFs to get the Borg set Mk X or grind them through the reputation system.
I like the idea of having both the short and long versions available. I'm not for going back to just the long versions, though.

The Hive, for instance, is very unclear on which is actually first? I'm not even sure we actually beat the queen.
I liked the STF's more when they were together. We have no true raid like content, which is fun to do for many. There's still Terradome, which I believe is still buggy as hell, but it's not integrated to the STF system and is apparently forgotten.
I'm really not into the whole grind and casual focus of this game. I want to have fun, with my fleet, but there's really no point to it.

While it's a neat idea from a story perspective, I also think that too many players are really good at either space or ground but not both. Also, while a given STF might be beatable in fifteen minutes (or less), we've all experienced pick-up games that took much longer. The chances of getting a random group that could tackle both space and ground in a reasonable amount of time or at all is gonna be pretty slim, I think. Already we have too many players doing Elite STF's who really should be sticking to Normal for the time being!
I agree with the previous poster though. How about SOME combined ones?

The Hive is Ground>Space.
You get snuck onboard the unimatrix to combat the queen then when you beat her physical body she moves her conciousness into the Dodecahedron, it's (purposely) unclear about whether she's (permanently) dead or not.

It's been a long request to restore the old STFs, so players can play for nostolgia and some, to experience the story. Since they aren't queued, players can form up groups and fly to those worlds like in the old days.
And to have them viable, Cryptic could put back in unique rewards so they be played once in a while.
I'm all for having missions in both ground and space (I'm one of the few people that actually likes Terradome) , but with something like STFs, Eyeaaah... no.
Ideally, I would like to see something that combines the gameplay of like Mine Trap with the space incursions.
Why can't they merge them AND keep it the way they are?
Just add extra STF missions that are merged BUT with much greater rewards, and even bonus dillitium or marks for completion time.
If players don't want to spend much time on their game, then don't play the merged, instead play the regular mission.
I'd like it if they kept the current set of STFs as they are, and introduced some new ones that are like the old-school versions with multiple parts both space and ground. They'd take longer but would offer increased rewards.
Why can't they merge them AND keep it the way they are?
They could say that the 'split up' versions (Infected Space, Infected Ground) are holodeck training programs for the real thing (Infected Space and Ground, like it used to be), the complete, merged STF.
They were that way before and many people avoided them because of that.
Let people play what they want to.
Us Space Rangers will hold the high ground while you Ground Pounders keep us safe down there.
110% agree.
To op, terrible idea (no offense). If the current reputation system didn't exist this would be a novel idea. But right now its like asking the dev's how can you take a long/silly/ridiculous grind and make it even longer and more ridiculous.

These are kind of what I was suggesting.
I don't want the old "2-hour mega-grind STFs" back any more than the rest of you do, but a 30-minute ground and space mission wouldn't be too bad. In fact, it would be much like the current episode missions (except more intense).
And the original ground and space ones would remain intact as well, for players who prefer one over the other.

The merging of ground and space STFs was in fact the original STFs. There typically was a space battle, some harder then other, followed by a ground battle. The retro STFs in my opinion were a lot better then what we have now. Bring back the old STFs. Actually have two sets of STFs present and retro. Seriously how many of us veteran, at launch, players have gone to Gamma Orionis and sat 5 to 6 hours doing the back to back STFs just to get the remaining 3 pieces of the Borg set and only come out with 1 for that day? Raises hand...I did. There were no optional then...only death over and over again and again. We would actually plan a day for STFs so that we could prepare to waste a portion of our day in our lives in a game. We would have a pot of coffee made, an essential ingredient to any STF, a bowl of snacks and a sandwich at our desk. We would gather on Teamspeak or Ventrilo or whatever internet chat room the guild was using at the time and just....go....and have fun...dying a lot.
For the retro STFs the reward would be the retro Borg gear just as it was before. I am really disappointed that the Borg set got modified. I realize the original Borg set was nearly overpowering but this was the situation way back in season 2 and it was never dealt with. Oh sure they nerfed the RSP but didn't change the Borg set and now probably because someone got killed by a simple and yet creative modified build PWE decided to change the Borg set. Okay changes have been occurring dramatically since season 3 I can still almost adapt some more but it is creating a lot of frustration in myself and my fleet mates. Sorry I digress, originally I thought this would be the only way to get the Borg set but then realized most of the STO community would collectively groan. Then I thought why not? Let the new people experience the retro STFs as we, those that have been here since launch, the veterans have experienced it in all its glory with the same benefits. I am sure the complaining of the present day STFs will drop dramatically if anyone decided to try the retro STFs. Although there would probably be that ultra small portion, .0025%, of the STO community that would go around saying "That wasn't hard." Well...we won't talk about them here.
Then there was Terradome before it got nerfed. It was 5 versus 500. The first statement anyone made was "Why won't these ships die?" Followed by the "I've been watching this group for 5 minutes and none of these guys have flipped a coin yet". To "Holy cow there's a lot of Undine in here!" "Don't shoot the sacks hanging from the ceiling" was a common statement. Followed by the "Who aggro'd the room?" statement. I was playing Terradome with a fleet mate and some others that had formed a team in Gamma Orinis. We had gotten into the end room and started shooting the Sulu's and the Undine when my fleet mate started screaming "the sky is falling the sky is falling!" While shooting wildly into the hordes of Undine I became confused and said "What?" In a adrenalized caffeinated moment he frantically replied "Look up Undine Rangers!" I looked up to see a hundred Undine drop down from the ceiling. Good times good times.
I propose that the retro STFs be re-vitalized. The present day STFs would be a stepping stone to reach the retro STFs. Why? Simply put you would need the Borg gear to do the retro STFs to get the Borg space gear. Any veteran player will tell you that the Borg space gear is the essential to anyone's collection of space gear. If any limitations were to be imposed in access to the retro STFs then one should complete the MACO Team Specialist accolade. Although I hardly think it would be necessary since those who are fortunate to have the Mk XII drops will complete this accolade voluntarily. I'm still waiting for mine says the little blue guy as he goes forth onto the grind. In addition to the Borg space gear I propose that the rewards consist of 2000 dilithium and with 7000 xp. Both which are essential to the construction of the star bases. Nuff said.
