Not necessarily. In TOS every ship or installation had its unique uniform patch to tell them apart, in Generations uniforms were a wild mix between TNG and DS9 and in DS9 for a while station personnel used a different uniform than starship personnel.
Of course, the way it is handled by many players now defeats the purpose but as far as I am concerned you can tell (if you're a Vulcan or an Android) if you see a TNG uniform with TOS boots and pants and AGT badge that it's an officer from the USS Danu.

Sometimes, if you want to bury the hatchet with a Klingon, it has to be in his skull. - Captain K'Tar of the USS Danu about J'mpok.

It was just a necessary evil from a creative point of view. Otherwise everyone in the game would have the same clothing with zero customization.

You get used to it after a while.

    Excellent points!

That's a division patch (see "division"). Uniforms are all the same color, the same cut, medals and insignia go on the same side, a certain and fixed length from the seam or edge of something.

Especially when you look at movies, there's a tendency of the senior staff to be out of uniform or in variants.

I've heard that can be true in real navies too.

So I'm fine with captains and bridge officers being wildly customized although I'd like station personnel and whatnot to all get standardized, preferably to the Fleet Uniform used on the front page of the site now, which I'd prefer to see unlocked.

Then maybe the Fleet tailor unlocks could be shifted to things like unzipped versions of that, rolled up sleeves, vest versions, etc. And in turn the other variants.

I always said I thought all junior staff in the game should be standardized. Which would make the bridge officers and captains stand out more, which is a good thing IMHO.

Right now, when I visit a station, picking out the more important NPCs is tricky the first time.

At first, I found the rainbow of uniforms among players obnoxious. Eventually though, I realized that in their minds, that was their uniform of their character or crew and "canon" in their imaginary universe. I feel that way about my own crew uniforms - that's just our own uniform code. I do agree that the NPC's need to be a bit more consistent in regards to uniforms worn in certain locations - and what's up with some NPC's having no rank pips?

    Well,
you could play KDF side, the limited range of uniform options enforces a much more uniform look across player characters. Which from an immersion point is a good thing. Sure you have variants and everyone looks a little different put all look still very klingon, orion, naussicaan etc.

There's a wide variety in military uniforms in modern militarizes as well, between different branches, different operational specialties, different commands, different operational contexts...

The text in that screenshot is just a handwavey in-universe explanation for letting everyone fanfic in their own development of early 25th century Starfleet uniforms, something I rather like.

I only wish they didn't have Off-Duty, Formal, and Uniform separation. I have a lot of uniform pieces I use for regular clothing, and I'd *love* to have, say, the Mirror top with the Ferengi skirt.

*sighs* I love clothing options too damn much for my own good :P

I wouldn't go that far.... KDF can color their uniforms the way feds do, it's just that they default to grey.
