Yes. I can't say exactly when this will get done, but new Exchange categories will be added for Warfare-Ground, Warfare-Space and Consultant. I just spoke with our Engineers about this today to verify.

Thank you, this will be very helpful. The Exchange is getting cumbersome with all the new 'products' that are out now.
First mentioned in Priority One Episode 69 - Interview with Dan Stahl (24 February 2012)
For a more recent link, check out: Ask Cryptic: August 2012. For simplicity, i'll just quote the question and Mr Stahl's answer:
Q: (maxxina) re-done exchange in S7? Yes/No?
Dstahl: Yes. Maybe soon. This is also true of the PVE Queue UI, and probably other UI elements as well. The very next UI updates we will be making are in relation to Fleet Project donations, where we plan to add the ability to donate multiple anomalies at once.
I guess 9 months isn't "enough" time to update the Exchange UI. Oh i'm sure it will be updated Soon(tm), but by who's definition? Then again, given the flat out lies told by Mr Stahl in regards to the Season 7 "STF Dilithium Removal" fiasco, I suppose it's par for the course at this point.

Wait, what, more categories? It's rather difficult to find the one you're currently looking for, please don't add more with the current UI. Doffs really need a specific one, with traits and race filters at least. Come on, you know it does.
Honestly the Exchange just needs a major overhaul (searching by factions, traits, bridge officer abilities, etc.). I wouldn't mind Season 8 being delayed a couple weeks if this was done right.

I have to ask; If you guys are spending time on adding new categories, why not spend some more time to overhaul the exchange?
Obviously, the above isn't a exhaustive example; some things like Consoles and Equipment would have more subgroups. If you search "Tricobalt" in Space, It'll search all subcategories in Space, including weapons and console categories.
EDIT: The preview of my post shows subcategories, but the actual post does not show that. List formatting is weird.

Very much this.
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class. Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider. Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.
Objectively, in "that other" MMO, third-party (meaning the programmers don't get paid) bug-free alternatives to the Auction House UI (e.g., Auctionator) get done faster than nine months. Or even three.

We totally agree that an Exchange UI overhaul is overdue. But this fix (adding more categories) can be made over a much shorter timeframe than overhauling the entire thing.

NINE months. Nine months since an Exchange overhaul was first mentioned, and I dare say, you haven't progressed AT ALL in actually getting it done.
That's not entirely true. They added the doff subcategories.
Still incredibly marginal; unpaid WoW addon writers could do (and generally have done) more and better in the space of a few weeks. Inviting unflattering comparisons to people who work for free isn't good for the game.
If a dev is to post, we'd prefer an informative post on a controversial topic, rather than reassurance about an old issue there is general consensus on.

One thing I've pondered is whether it'd be possible to make the different search categories have individualized subcategories to search.
At present, all categories on exchange have the same options, rarity, and rank. Rank is completely irrelevent for many search categories, especially Doffs and commodities. In the case of Doffs, you could set the exchange to have a feature that let you search for certain aspects of the doff like race or traits. this would work for Boffs too.
On a topic unrelated to what our friend from PWE brings up, I would like my unicorn pink. Never mind that unicorns aren't real and anyone who says that I could get one is insane, but I would very much like my unicorn pink. We can have a cute discussion about the unreality of unicorns and timely UI improvements later.
It is very easy to create new Specializations, the game dev just open their game editor , start typing a new specialization and a new description such as : Specialization: Mistress - Increases any type of damage for 1 hour by 15% after being in sector space for 25 minutes (everyone knows after being in"Sector Space" the human being is more relaxed and can focus on objectives) and tadaaa ..we got a new doff
But the problem is :
How many doffs abilities are really working in this game and if the procent is a real 15% and not an 10 or 6% ...
We know already that many doffs are more "serious" and their powers do not work (properly) because those doffs do not combine business with pleasure (business = assignments & pleasure= powers )
I bet in 3 months we will have at least 2 new specializations and at least 50 new doffs (buggy or not, retired or not ,tested or not we'll see ) and the Exchange won't keep up lol..
Oh and i'd love a Mistress specialization doff because the stfs heavily diminish the player's abilities and ppl will have the "bells" to queue for Hive Space Elite or not to leave this instance in the first 15-20 minute.

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!
It should be considered a high priority.
So, what PWE is saying is, it won't get done...

You mean, they added a bunch of additional subcategories, making the Exchange UI even more confusing than it already was? Gotcha...
