Announcement About Upcoming Dilithium Changes - Nov 14, 2012

Greetings!

After many hours of deliberation and review of the post Season 7 player data, I've made the call to reverse the decision to remove Dilithium as a reward for running STFs. In addition, we've also decided to keep Dilithium as a reward in Fleet Actions.

There have been numerous posts explaining the rationale that went into the reward changes and I can clearly state that our goal of getting more Dilithium into the average player has been very successful. As the data suggested, there is a huge contingent of players that simply do not play STFs but are eager to earn Dilithium in other content. These players are benefiting from the addition of Dilithium in the Fleet Actions, so that worked well.

However, our concern that there would be too much Dilithium in the economy if we left Dilithium in both STFs and Fleet Actions has been outweighed by the frustration we've seen from STF fans since the launch of Season 7.

Season 7 is an awesome content filled update that the team is very proud of that has been overshadowed by player frustrations over the Dilithium changes. Cryptic has and always will take player feedback into consideration when making decisions and this is a case where we agree with the players that Dilithium should be back in the STFs. It is more fun to run STFs when you can earn Dilithium towards end game gear and no amount of data driven logic can outweigh this.

So here are the changes we'll be making in a maintenance build by the end of this week.
  • Normal STF runs will grant 480 Dilithium
  • Elite STF runs will grant 960 Dilithium
  • Space Fleet Action runs will grant 480 Dilithium
  • Ground Fleet Action runs will grant 640 Dilithium

This is in addition to the other rewards that STFs and Fleet Actions grant.

While this is still a change from Season 6, we hope that these new amounts will help the average player earn more Dilithium per day while maintaining the Dilithium that players who like to run STFs were receiving.

The additional Dilithium may impact the player-to-player Dilithium exchange rates in the future, but we would rather you were having fun in Season 7 than worrying about the economy. We have enough of that to deal with in the real world.

    First time for everything on the feedback front.

    But good call on the STF front. I'll be playing them again when the changes are made :)

    480 Dilithium for a normal STF run? I'll gladly accept this change. And I don't see this impacting the Dilitihium exchange rates anytime soon, since there's plenty of other things to sink Dilithium into.

    Thanks DStahl! I think this is a pretty good compromise to the rage that has been on the forums. Thanks again to the team for Season 7, and I look forward to seeing it expand and grow into Season 8.

    EXCELLENT decision (IMO) :D

    And BTW as far as Dilithium infusion into the economy - you were the one who put in the 8000 refinement cap to keep the Dilithium economy from spiraling out of hand.

    I will say again, the fact you stated in the blog that Level 50 players on average were way below that cap on a daily basis and you wanted to increase the average seems to be contradicted by the concern you had in this latest post. Either you need a better proofreader, or you were not being honest about your dilithium goals for S7 you stated in Blog #17 as part of your justification for your original Dilithium changes that you are now (thankfully) reverting to a fair degree.

    Now that is something i think we all can live with and a step in the right direction to gibe dilithium the actual meaning that it suppose to have. A time based currency. That gets rewarded for us playing the game in a way we like to play it.

    It would have been wonderful if you had also restored some of the random general loot back to the STF's. But at least this is something.

I liked what you said in your forum post: "we would rather you were having fun in Season 7 than worrying about the economy. We have enough of that to deal with in the real world." Exactly. You get it. Good on you, and I mean that most sincerely.

    No, really, I can't overstate the degree to which this has restored my confidence in STO. Looking forward to playing for many years to come!

    (Still not thrilled with the doff grinder cost, but eh, I can live with it. There are other, better ways to get blue/purple doffs anyway.)

    Nice change. Indeed the new content is great, but the dilithium changes were overshadowing it. Good work on the new content by the way, and thanks for listening to our concerns.

    What about the reward table for the fleet actions (double purple loots for the first dps)? Will they stay or will it be reverted? Not that it's a concern, I'm just curious about it.

    There is no bonus day anymore. That was mainly for EDC. Now, there are hourly events that boost Omega Mark rates.

    I'm pleased that you listened to the players feedback.

    You are correct, this was overshadowing some of the good things to come out of last patch and now dilithium is back in STF's, like others, I can live with the other changes.

    Thank you so much for listening to us on this. I am glad that you've added Dilithium to other missions to vary the content available, but the removal of it form my treasured STFs had really gotten me down. I am so happy that you're returning dilithium drops (even at the slightly reduced rate) so that whilst I'm working on the STFs for my reputation level, I can also earn Dilithium towards buying the gear.

    True alters don't have a "main". Account wide unlocks for all unique event rewards!!

    What bonus day? I just checked the ingame Calendar, and the STF "bonus days" are suspiciously ABSENT.

    It's nice to see that Stahl finally reversed his decision regarding the Dilithium removal from STFs. The conspiracy theorist in me, says there may have been a linkage between the ZERO Dilithium in STFs, and the removal of the # of queued players column in the new PVE Queue. They obviously didn't want players to be able to see that STFs had become a deserted wasteland.

    Now, some random loot in STFs again would be nice, as would seeing a re-organization to Fleet Actions to allow ALL types of ships equal opportunity at the "best" rewards. Fleet Actions are nothing more than a "DPS race" as it is.

    Oh please...

    The "Bonus Days" may have given additional EDCs, but they also gave something else: Additional Dilithium. Removing the Bonus Days, is merely yet another step in reducing the avenues available to us, to earn Dilithium.

    Thank you very much for your consideration and re-implementation of the Dillithium into the STF reward structure once again.
    I am very pleased with this decision and look forward to playing them often, again, still, continuing to play them...
    ... you know what I mean.

    It's still a massive net loss in dilithium with almost every element of the game converted into a dil sink. No more rewards for STFs (the honor to waste untold thousands of dilithium for rewards you should have already earned?), the new "mark" systems, the horrific decisions on the doff system...

    Reverting back to allow dilithium for STFs doesn't make up for the net loss of many thousands of dil per day. THOSE changes need to be reverted as well.
