I think you've gone overboard with Dilithium costs and have thereby made this game horribly inaccessible to people with regular jobs (i.e. those with money to spend).
With the new Dilithium sinks and stupid Doff costs, I don't think the 8k refinement cap is going to produce enough refined Dilithium to sell on the exchange.
If the Dilithium market crashes because people are holding onto more of it than ever before, then people will stop throwing money to solve their problems because they can't do so at a reasonable cost. If I need to pay 20 dollars a month just to cover my Dilithium expenditures then I'll probably start exploring other games.
With the closed economy in STO, with no outside regulation and no way for players to see what's going on, don't you think Cryptic will feed the Exchange with dilithium to maximize their revenue from Zen sales? I'm not saying they are, I have no evidence of that, I'm just saying they have the means and incentive and I doubt their stock holders would disagree...
We have a lot of casual players in the fleet concerned with the S7 dilithium changes, as it is right now they have a very difficult time keeping up with their dilithium needs, they don't hit their cap often and with the raising requirements for personal and fleet needs they are feeling a bit helpless.
My personal concern is that while S6 brought players and fleets together the changes to dilithium in S7 are going to drive a wedge between them. People are greedy, by nature, they are going to use all their dilithium for themselves and who cares about the fleet when its between yourself and them? The starbase will nearly halt (its just barely crawling right now), the embassy isn't even an option really. So, more so than exists right now, we are going to have a very large percentage of the population using their dilithium for themselves and giving nothing to the fleet, which causes a rift between the giving and the not.
I have a feeling casual players will lose some hope, the game will cease to be fun when they simply can't get any equipment. Standard equipment EC costs will sky rocket as gear simply doesn't drop anymore, dilithium isn't obtainable for them in the ridiculous quantities needed, and they refuse to pay real money for the BASICs of any game.
The greedy and/or players will continue to play, using all their dilithium for themselves and put it onto the exchange for zen.
Your regular daily players will probably split between taking it one day at a time and despair. Some will be unable to cope with the excessive dilithium needed, some will just take it as it comes, chances are you'll lose people in this segment as well.
I have a finance background so these market economy discussions are not totally alien (ha ha) to me. However, I will admit not having spent or wasted a lot of brain cells on this issue since I see this as a game for enjoyment not a job.
Having said that, I have neither heard nor read anything from Cryptic (and that includes some recent forum postings by high level company reps) that fully and simply explain the logic, mechanism and theory behind these upcoming actions. At first blush, as many have already stated, it seems like a not too subtle attempt to extract additional real life funds from the player community. This lack of a simple laid out explanation just adds fuel to the fire as far as Cryptic's real intention goes. The stated position that dil is a time based currency is clearly fallacious since there are only a limited number of activities that supply it and there is no apparent correlation between actual time spent on a given activity and the amount of dil rewarded. Oh yes, and then there's the cap on refinement which, even if dil was a time based currency, effectively ends any further speculation.
I agree with the above post that these actions will ultimately have a negative impact on both casual and serious gamers. As I have stated in a previous thread I just don't see this as a good business strategy and hope (and beg) that Cryptic reconsider implementation. But hey, I could be wrong. These people are running the company and I'm sure have given it a lot of thought, created numerous analytical studies and models, while I have limited my head scratching to only snack time between missions. For the sake of all of us who love STO let's hope the vast majority of us are in error and the gurus at Cryptic are right.

What would be the point of doing that? I'm not saying they couldn't, but the relationship between dilithium and zen on the exchange is what links F2P and purchasing players together, in a sense. There's no point in distorting that relationship by feeding the exchange with created dilithium.
Specifically, if they want to inject dilithium into the economy, why sell it (which gives only the players currently paying benefit) when you can just increase the amount of dilithium available globally (by decreasing prices or increasing the amount that can be mined) which benefits both paying customers and those who aren't paying now (but might in the future?)
It seems to me that actively selling dilithium would be a hugely bad idea for Cryptic and I see no evidence that they're actually doing it.
Will the dilithium exchange crash? I wouldn't be surprised if it does drop significantly. But I think Cryptic sees that as somewhat of a blessing in disguise; it makes F2Pers dilithium more valuable for them and so they get more benefit and it increases the Zen turnover for the exchange.
i am constantly amazed at how much dilithium gets contributed to the fleet base.
personally, i keep a portion of my dilithium for me and contribute the rest to the base projects.
i get the feeling that long term players have saved very large amounts of dilithium, which will eventually run out or diminish quit a bit.
just picking a number.....if you have 50 contributing members that would generate approximately 400,000 dilithium per day. that is a lot. each member could generate at least 200k+ of dilithium per month. so a fleet of 50 can generate 10 million a month.
i play just about daily and manage to get the dilithium i need and still contribute to base projects.
season 7 will require more dilithium, but i think players will get smarter when it comes to making dilithium purchases. just my own experience i wasted a lot of dilithium when i first started playing, but i am much more strategic now on spending dilithium.
persoaly i think were getting the shaft. i use to buy zen but apparently my zen purcheses and lifetime fee and the 2 years i was a subscription member aret enough for these jearks. well this TRIBBLE has shut down this source of revnue for them i wont buy another zen card ever. to hell with this.
Why would you NEED to buy dilithium? If it's not worth it then don't buy it, your char will just take more time to stuff and level up. Money is a shortcut you can take or avoid.
The main thing to understand is Cryptic is a company looking to make money. Being the main driving force, all exchanges will benefit them more than us as players - P2P or F2P. Taking that into consideration, Cryptic needs to look at supply and demand factors. The need for dilithium has skyrocketed recently e.g. a special base project runs 200,000 dilithium.
As my fleet is less than 25 players this amount is way too high. It takes two days just to earn 1,500 myself and with the special projects switching so fast then only one is completed every few months. For fleets with more than 300+ players that number is feasible but keep in mind such a few number of fleets will reach that number.
So my basic analogy is they need to lower dilithium costs across the board or raise the amount of dilithium earned through missions and DOFF missions.

I don't know where you fall on Cryptic's statistical scale of 'how much dilithium people earn per day', but 750 dilithium per day on average seems pretty low to me. I only play my alt for about 1/2 an hour per day and I make the full 8000 per day.
^^^
Is that a typo as I can earn 1500 Dilithium in less than two minutes?

FYI - in the Priority One audio interview posted today (Monday 11/5/12) - Al Rivera stated that when the new Reputation System goes live on Holodeck - the Rep Projects that y9ouo use to gain Rep for the various Tier will NO LONGER have any Dilithium Cost associated with them (they still do on Tribble atm.)
The Rep Projects you do to acquire actual gear and other actual character items still will though.

Chart the B'tran cluster gives 1440 (do explore at the same time to complete Strange New World).
Aiding the Deferi gives 1440.
Borg Red Alert Encounters give 480 each.
The other two Deferi missions give 480 each.
Traelus system gives 480.
Distress call missions give 480.
If you only do the ones that give 1440, that's 5760 dilithium a day. If you do DOFFing, the 480 dil missions, STFs, and Borg encounters on top of that, you can easily max out at 8000 in just a few hours.

That's because you're not doing dailies.
