If you want this to be some generic sci-fi MMO where the IP doesnt really mean anything, then by all means the OP's idea is the way to go. But people who are actually familiar with the Trek IP expect the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans to be opposing factions, or at the VERY least independent factions. Creating a mega Fed faction that includes the KDF and Romulans is tossing the IP out the window and the game should be renamed Space Trek Wars Online.
PS: yes, I know that some Trek episodes have portrayed a possible future where the Klingons were part of the Federation. However there is a reason that no Trek series has ever actually taken place in that possible future; because that is the possible "happy ending" to the story, not the main focus of the story. No one wants to play a game that is the possible "happy ending", they want to play the conflict.

I agree with everything you just said.
I could envision the game eventually getting to a place where a faction alliance actually makes sense. But I think it's better for the game overall if there was a more clear distinction between the factions and more opportunities for both cooperation and conflict that are story-driven.

You are so wrong on so many fronts:
The IP was throw out the window a long time ago - now Fed captains fly - Cardi ships, Tholian ships, Jem'hadar ships, ships from the future!! and on and on. Uniform code is completely gone - I was in a colony invasion where all the starfleet officers except me were dressed to go to a party - and another where they were all dressed as Jedi Knights swinging that glowing Tholian sword. Sorry but the IP argments is a dud.
Most players in the game 80%+ don't want to fight the Klingons or the Romulans and are much more interested in doffing, fighting the Borg and other things. That is one reason PvP in the game is dead - no-one wants to fight each other. That is why people don't care much for the missions and some by-pass them all together. And to bring the IP up - throughout hundreds of show across 5 series you saw Klingons and Feds co-operating or fighting along side each other 10x for every 1 they fought each other - so that is another failed argument.
In fact the Happy Ending was basically the halmark to the end of every show - over and over again. In fact every major conflict between KDF and Feds since the Khitomer accord was started by some shape-shifter fooling them in to fighting - not that they naturally wanted to fight. So you are wrong there to.
Probably the most famous 1 liners from DS9 was when the Defiant was laying the minefield and was attacked by the Jem'hader. Martok and a groups of BoPs swoop in and save them.

The fact that you have resorted to this kind of total fabrication completely invalidates anything else you have to say. The fact is, you have absolutely no idea what "most" or 80% of the players in game are interested in. You have no way to know that without polling them. So again, the fact that you are now just making things up to try to support your argument completely invalidates anything else you have to say.

Actually Mr Stahl was the person who started the whole "KDF only makes up 16 to 18% of the Player base" idea - it is not something that I have made up. A lot have players have question his remark, however, he has more data then any of us do.
if you take any time to read the PvP threads - many PvP Vetrens have posted many times that more than 90% of the game pop does not PvP and that more and more the Q's are dead and they have do almost always do pre-mades just to get a match going.
Sorry about that BG, Levi just pushed the right button today and you edited this one before I could. I'll try to ignore him from now on as we who read his posts know his M.O.

You know full well that no-one but the devs can give hard numbers. But I have played more than 3000 hrs on this game, I am here on the forums every single day. I read what others post. I observe what others say and do in the game.
Anyones numbers are a guess - but if you are around long enough you can make a pretty good guess. My numbers are a guess. mr Stahl says that less than 20% play KDF - that is a fact.
The Fed vs Kdf Pvp Q is almost always DEAD - every time I look at it. It is also a major complaint on the PvP forum. That also says not many what to mix it up and fight.
No way. I like my independant KDF char. If i want to log on a fed char i log on my fed char, but don't force me to play something i don't want to play.
Edit: and if you want kdf ships and missions, just create a kdf char?

Nothing has been anounced yet. Until then, I won't play the forumers favourite game: complaining about things that aren't even available.
I know you like that but for your own sanity you shouldn't do that. Just wait and see, and then complain if it's not what you want. I see no point creating such threads.
The Fed vs Kdf Pvp Q is almost always DEAD - every time I look at it. It is also a major complaint on the PvP forum. That also says not many what to mix it up and fight.
This is because feds often get completely OP ships while the klingons have to buy lockbox ones to compete. More choice, better stats, the best escorts... Feds got everything with season 6. There's no fun playing pvp when you know your stuff isn't up to par. In the meantime the kdf players are still complaining about 2 year-old issues about their best escort turnrate.

True. Cryptic has sold the idea to the fans that its ok and they have gobbled up the idea like sugar.
Most players in the game 80%+ don't want to fight the Klingons or the Romulans and are much more interested in doffing, fighting the Borg and other things.
Most just want to by or gamble to get the next "shiny" they can acquire.
That is one reason PvP in the game is dead - no-one wants to fight each other.
Only one reason though. PvP is suffering from more than just "players not wanting to fight".
They do not wish to fight because so much is broken with balance in PvP.
They do not wish to fight because thier egoes will not let them accept that someone else is better at it than themselves.
They do not wish to fight because PvP is in such a bad state. period.
That is why people don't care much for the missions and some by-pass them all together.
Why should they play a mission when they can just grind social content for greater rewards?
And to bring the IP up - throughout hundreds of show across 5 series you saw Klingons and Feds co-operating or fighting along side each other 10x for every 1 they fought each other - so that is another failed argument.
Yet through that 5 series of shows and movies the Klingon Empire never surrendered to the UFP.
The Empire may have joined the UFP at one time, in a future timeline, but like the Vulcans or Andorians they remained thier own seperate entity with thier own government and social nuances.
What you proposed is completely opposite of such and reduces the Players faction choice to a non-choice as the game will just be the same with different skins.
In fact the Happy Ending was basically the halmark to the end of every show - over and over again. Klingons always want to fight. Be it over breakfast or the way the feds butt thier noses into everything, the Klingon EMpire is always quick to take offense.
In fact one of the base reasons for the War between the feds and KDF in STO is partially becuase of such Fed "nose-sticking" when they condemed the KDFs swooping into RSE space and conquering once RSE held worlds.
Our societies may cme together to help each other in extreme times of danger to us all, but we have never been "buddy-buddy" in our relationship together. We have always had differeing views of how things should be in the Star trek universe.

Which would lead to a fine understanding and cold war setting at endgame bewtween the KDF and the feds if the fed/KDF war storyline leading up to said endgame allowed the player to discover the Undine/Iconia/Borg subterfuge for themselves and come to the conslusion that "cooperation" is the best course instead of the forced Peace imposed between our factions to MAKE endgame make sense.
My beef is not with the war, so much as the Devs did nothing with it and then ignored it as a storyline then imposed an endgame that closes it without even letting us enjoy it for what it was in our gameplay.

WoW had allied species in different starting zones. Why shouldn't this be possible in STO?
No, he and bluegeek are completely right. Merging the 3 main factions into one just makes this generic sci fi game online. Absolutely terrible idea.
The fact that you have resorted to this kind of total fabrication completely invalidates anything else you have to say. They will not PvP on a train.
Not in the dark! Not in a tree!
Not in a car! You let them be!
They do not like it in a box.
They do not like it with a fox.
They will not PvP in a house.
They do not like it with a mouse.
They do not like it here or there.
They do not like it ANYWHERE!
And this is just many of the more open minded ones who've tried it and might be up for doing it on a random Tuesday every six months.
It's not "If you build it, they will come." It's "If you build it, less people than you think will come and they will get scared off by the old customers screaming their heads off in zone chat and on the forums about all the effort Cryptic wasted building this thing."

it is always good to see one of the long-time die hard KDFers - Roach - aka bitemepwe(which he has tried to have changed)
Roach something needs to be done - a merge of the 2 factions makes the least risky financial sense for Cryptic - and don't tell me they won't take the least money in for most money out route.
Given past history as a guide i think this fleshing out of the KDF in Season 8 is just another smoke and mirrors - wish list - or something else that I need not say. Given that and Season 8 passes without anything for the KDF - it's going to die anyways. At least under 1 banner Cryptic can guarentee they will focas on the 3 factions much easier.
As a rule, even the fantasy MMOs have over 80% of the playerbase disinterested in PvP. From what we do know, that number generally holds here.
The 80% comment he made did not mention PvP. He said 80% of players dont want to fight KDF or Romulans:
Most players in the game 80%+ don't want to fight the Klingons or the Romulans and are much more interested in doffing, fighting the Borg and other things.
But since you are now using statistics of your own, can you please provide a source?
Actually he does. Didnt you see the 80% figure he completely made up? He apparently makes up whatever he wants to try to support his terrible idea.
I responded that the number was a guess - that is not fake - a guess could be wrong -but not fake.
but as you are starting to see many others including vetrens of the game and the MMO space like stoleviathan99 - the 80% number is a pretty reasonable "guess" - it appears the more you cry about it being "fake" the more you don't want to believe it - and want to use it as your only argument against an idea of mine that you don't like.
Your last post is just another example of your circlular rant - 80% don't want to fight KDF - where else in the game can you fight KDF than in PvP at end-game? if you think most players are out there doing the old things where they fight NPC's - why would Cryptic feel the need to add dilth rewards to these missions?
Roach something needs to be done - a merge of the 2 factions makes the least risky financial sense for Cryptic - and don't tell me they won't take the least money in for most money out route.
What risk is Cryptic at if they do not combine the factions?
Its not like they are losing money on the KDF right now.
If anything they are breaking even as the faction is stagnating slightly with little growth.
If there was a risk of losing money over the KDF then that shows that thier is a chance to make a profit on the KDF as well if they had more content to finish them up.
The Merging factions idea is not needed to finish the KDF or ease the pains Cryptic has to take to create this game. Suffering those pains is part of thier job as the creator, making compromises that ruin that gameplay should not be.
Given past history as a guide i think this fleshing out of the KDF in Season 8 is just another smoke and mirrors - wish list - or something else that I need not say. Given that and Season 8 passes without anything for the KDF - it's going to die anyways.
It may well be, but I'm willing to wait and see before throwing in the towel and saying, " Go ahead, make the KDF the newest fed pet. I didn't expect good gameplay anyways."
At least under 1 banner Cryptic can guarentee they will focas on the 3 factions much easier.
The 3 factions are already under one banner, the banner of STO.
The Devs need to take it seriuosly or not bother at all and just let STO dwindle into a Star Trek virtual merchandizing platform with little story but a lot of "shiny's" to sell to the fanbase.
The 80% comment he made did not mention PvP. He said 80% of players dont want to fight KDF or Romulans:

One of the key to analytics and logic is inference.
The fact that stahl says less than 20% of the playerbase is klingon he correctly inferred that 80% dont want to fight.
Now you can correctly infer 100 different things from stahl's comment. Doesnt make this inference wrong. But instead you badger by saying the same thing over and over and over.
I think allowing the faction to be allies is a good idea. But not a complete marriage. Let us pve together defend each others starbases. Go into zones. Maybe even join each others fleets.
it is always good to see one of the long-time die hard KDFers - Roach - aka bitemepwe(which he has tried to have changed)

Honestly, what I could foresee for Season 8 is something like this:
5 more episodes with an FE series, this time KDF focused.
2 more KDF episodes.
Klingon Adventure Zone designed to "solve" leveling. by acting as 12 levels worth of content, available in Co-Op and PvP flavors, with Feds. PvP version, they fight you while you try to level. PvE version, they help Klingons level. Maybe it's a Rura Penthe Adventure Zone?
5 more episodes with an FE series, this time KDF focused.
Excellent idea and one I agree upon whole heartedly.
2 more KDF episodes.
Its a start and one that I'll enjoy watching grow.

Co-op with feds is not needed at levels 1-12 of KDF and goes against the TRIBBLE-poor represented conflict between the two factions at those levels.
A KDF adventure zone may be cool and could be used to solve the low level issue, but co-op at that level is way out of the realm of what is going on at the low levels of the game.
Such co-op ideas should be used only at endgame after the player has traveled up the ranks through story and learned of the Undine/Iconian subversion.

PvP at low levels is generally a bad idea in a game, even with auto-scaling. Excluding Feds is altogether is also generally a bad idea.
What I could see here is this:
You start the mission in Rura Penthe. You encounter Fed and KDF prisoners.
If you opt to work together, you get transported to the PvE/Co-op version. If you reject working together, you get transported to the PvP version.
Klingons get more missions inside, either way for more XP.
I just think an Adventure Zone being faction specific would be a source of endless strife and bellyaching.
Comments
PS: yes, I know that some Trek episodes have portrayed a possible future where the Klingons were part of the Federation. However there is a reason that no Trek series has ever actually taken place in that possible future; because that is the possible "happy ending" to the story, not the main focus of the story. No one wants to play a game that is the possible "happy ending", they want to play the conflict.

The 80% comment he made did not mention PvP. He said 80% of players dont want to fight KDF or Romulans:
But since you are now using statistics of your own, can you please provide a source?

One of the key to analytics and logic is inference.
The fact that stahl says less than 20% of the playerbase is klingon he correctly inferred that 80% dont want to fight.
Now you can correctly infer 100 different things from stahl's comment. Doesnt make this inference wrong. But instead you badger by saying the same thing over and over and over.
I think allowing the faction to be allies is a good idea. But not a complete marriage. Let us pve together defend each others starbases. Go into zones. Maybe even join each others fleets.
