Concept: Guest Star

ufpdewolfeufpdewolfe Member Posts: 95 Arc User
Greetings,

I have an idea for a temporary bridge officer character for missions. A guest star that is specific to the mission. A character that foundry authors can create that plays the mission with the away team as a temporary bridge officer.

This means you could have a character on your team that could actually run the risk of dying.

A character written by cryptic or foundry authors that would not conflict with your expectations of your officers.

Thoughts?

I like it. While I usually hate the idea of escort missions, in the Star Trek verse, they would make sense (though, the option to make their "death" non-permanent needs to be in place). Plus the series had Guest Stars all the time. This has some great potential for story missions, +1 to you. :)

Doesn't have to be an escort, it could just be an option related to story. Not just from regular game play combat. Like sending Geordie to his death to save the ship.

I like it. And this could be used to improve some past missions involving NPCs that follow you around (like Zelle in "Divide et Impera" and Drake in "Suspect").

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Yup - being able to create party members the mission author can control is a vital story-telling mechanism. Been calling for this for ages now!

    Indeed,

Maybe we need a red shirt slot too. And then, a Worf slot with the character getting thrown to the ground so things look serious.

My sarcasm detector is either ringing wildly, or you're serious and the thing has a malfunction.

I do agree that there should be an option in the Foundry for a "Guest Star", which could be used for things such as escort missions. The guest character dies, you fail the mission/objective.

Guess I'm the sole dissenter. I never liked the missions where those "surprise" officers showed up. I found the shuttle pilot from the Gamma quadrant FE mission to be quite annoying.

I've long been an advocate of something like this, ever since I played the mission with Tom Riker's kid. I always described it as the Star Trek version of Kingdom Hearts.

I think the specifics of it need hammering out but I can see it working.

I also think it would be great for things like the Romulan adventure zone, where you have mysteries and situations that a Romulan BO might have extra thoughts on.

My take would simply be to award a non-customizable, non-renameable BO with unique abilities or multiclass abilities which opens extra dialogues in certain missions when present.

You could take them anywhere but taking them certain places would have an advantage.

One example of this might be, for example, to give Wesley Crusher a kid or a protege. He's an acting ensign like Wesley was with multiclass abilities, all ensign rank. Bring him on certain missions and h comes up with insane solutions that lead to alternate mission tracks that are easier... Or harder.

Maybe give him a default ability to launch a dialogue when targeting enemy groups where he suggests a way of dealing with them based on their faction. And it either works, making the enemy group easier, or fails and makes them tougher.

I think it would be awesome to have BOs who give suggestions constantly that we can accept or reject, that make things easier or harder randomly with a success modifier. One constant criticism of the game is that BOs feel like they give captains orders. I'd like it if they gave suggestions based on their species and profession and enemy groups and these suggestions could succeed or fail and we could accept or reject them.

Heck, maybe as a new default feature. Add a button that lets us talk to a BO. They ask us what situation we want to deal with. They offer a list of suggestions. We approve one and it gives us a buff or debuff.

Also add something similar to a briefing room aboard our ships with our BOs around a table, with longer term buffs and debuffs.

Hmm like a collectible BOFF? Sorta like a named bridge officers that you can't customize but have rare or specific abilities.

Similar to a DOFF, but a full bridge officer character that has static abilities and appearance that can be used in addition to your regular away team?

I'm picturing in my head for example. You have some mission, and are joined by Wesley Crusher who has unique abilities and appearance and has mission specific dialog in addition to your regular away team.

Would he join your crew so you could use him other missions? Or only be available for that specific mission?

I guess my take is that in the Kingdom Hearts model, highly customizable BOffs are your "Donald" and "Goofy."

Whereas guest star BOffs would be more like your "Simba" and "Ariel." And even then, I'd look at adding some customization.

For example: Joshua Riker would have preset face and body sliders but would get a full range of off duty uniforms, like what KDF Marauding BOs are supposed to get. Miral Paris would get any Starfleet uniform you have unlocked. The face, body, and name are locked. Maybe make them orange quality "legendary" BOs. Maybe six traits including one that lets you launch a dialogue with them and one that influences a key mission involving them. (So, for example, when you play the "Badlands" mission with Joshua Riker, the cage portions all auto-complete.

I'd look at retrofitting some BOs into this system like the Khitomer Accord Borg. (Maybe allow Borg BOs to be used in Borg STFs?)

    Legendary Boffs!

Intresting idea, maybe two different concepts here. A character for use in missions for foundry/devs. And a collectible boff system.

Should this thread be moved to the Foundry discussion forum?

I would just do it, but the proposal includes a temporary BO that the devs can add to their missions as well. Depending on how the conversation goes, it might still be moved.

Would someone like to champion the concept of a "Guest Star" for Dev missions and explain why this is a good idea?

I understand that some people don't like the idea of being forced to take along a BO they didn't set up themselves. Would someone like to explain why the benefit outweighs this downside?

I would also point out that adding such a feature to the Foundry would require that the Foundry add a BO creator UI, so that the BO can be given appropriate skills and equipment in addition to being costumed. I really like the idea, but it's definitely non-trivial. Right now Foundry authors can't select equipment for NPC's, which would also be a good thing. But all of that gear would have to be made available somehow, unless you decide that they automatically get a set of faction-standard gear.
