Advice for Sci Odyssey Build and Char Build

Heya,

(skip the italic part if you just want the &tld; version)

I started STO when it was released, quit playing for a while after it went FTP, and now I've been back for about a week trying to get back into things.

At the moment I only have 4 borg items so I'll be doing a good bit of STFs to start getting my equipment up to snuff.

I enjoy PvE and PvP, but I haven't done any PvP in STO yet, so that's what this thread is about. Up until now I've been running an 8 beam setup with all 3 Odyssey consoles, borg console, 2 EPS regulators, 1 biofunction monitor, 1 field generator, and 2 phaser relays (or something like that...I had a tact Oddy and just switched to a Sci version).

Everything I did until now was just based on throwing as much damage adding consoles as I could, didn't really think about anything else.

BUT...I'd like to change and actually start thinking about what I'm doing since I want to start getting into PvP. I'm a quick learner, but there are so many different versions of fits and builds and reasons all over, I wanted to see if I could get some information tailored specifically for my situation.



First, I've read just about every build thread I could find, they are full of useful info, but I just wanted to ask some questions related specifically to my personal situation.

I need advice for a ship and character (and DOFFs would be nice) build that is somewhat balanced for PvE and PvP. I prefer to keep one setup for both, but if switching to something else would be hands down better between the two I could probably do that as well. My main goal is to do as much damage as possible, without gimping my survivability to much. I know cruisers aren't meant to throw out the DPS of an escort...but I don't want to just be a flying brick either.

Right now I'm thinking 6 Beams (2 Anti-Proton, 4 Phasers right now...still working on getting the other 4 Anti-Proton), 1 transphasic torp forward, 1 mine aft (not sure which mine yet).

These are my BOFF plans:

Lt Tac: TT1, FAW2
Lt Sci: HE1, TSS2
Com Engineer: EPTW1, EPTS2, EPTS3, Aux2SIF3
LtCom Universal: (Tac) TT1, TS2, APB2
Ensign Universal: (Eng) EPTW1

For modules the only one I'm really sure of is the Borg module I think, other than that I'm really needing some advice on consoles since I'm in the habit of just throwing in damage stuff.

As to my character build, I want to focus as much on space skills as possible, with ground only as filler skills. I guess my main question here is where to put everything. Are there some skills I need to max out, or is it better to just put them all at 6 so I can get more skills. Fewer maxed or more partials, not sure what is better.

From what I've gathered, DOFFs are going to depend on my final build, so I figured I'd figure those out last after I have my build planned, but feel free to mention them if you post a build for either the ship or char if you want.

    There are a few oddy builds in there and lots of good advice.

    I have (actually still reading it, I skimmed over it the first time but am now reading everything...gonna take a while). My issue is (at least from what I saw), he doesn't mention what I should be using for Tactical Consoles in the Oddy, and most of what he mentions talks about tanking/shields...didn't see much mention about damage, which is one reason I started this thread...to get a bit more specific information on a hybrid dps/tanking build.

    Unless I misunderstood what I was reading and one of them he listed actually is a hybrid build?

    okay, lets see...

    a hybrid sci cruiser, in my opinion, is not very solid in pvp right now.

    best to go traditional healer sci cruiser. you will have lots more fun. because that is what your captain, and ship type do best.

    to force your ship and captain combination into a playstyle is not a good way to build a functional......well....anything.

    if you want a dps cruiser go tac captain, and go heavy on self heals. you can still be supportive with throwing out a tss and hazzards here and there.

    but anywho, get get what im trying to say?....and btw, anything works in pve, and thats the problem with sto pvp. you have to play your role well in the "trifecta" of team balance mmo game play.

    I don't mind going for a more traditional approach, but I'm still unsure what to put in the tactical consoles in that case. I would like a hybrid build, I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of efficiency to get that, but not willing to completely gimp myself...if that makes any sense.

    Tactical Consoles will always be your energy type damage consoles.

    well, what oddy are you flying?

    if its the ops or sci variant you only get 2 consoles anyway right?

    you are already gimped there from starters to boost your damage potential.

    like i said, consider your ship and captain type for this build idea you have.
