Well, as a long time Star Trek fan and STO player I'm sure many of you heard that NASA has said warp speed is possible and they are working on such technology. What warp drive is just in case many of you don't know it is when the Enterprise enters warp the ship will generate a warp bubble around the ship allowing it to travel at a high rate of speed without people slamming into a bulkhead.
I was watching a episode on the history channel talking about UFO's at Area 51, back in 1989 a guy named Bob Lasar was working for Area 51 he came clean back then on what he was doing. He said he was working on reverse engineering a UFO they had, trying to find out how it was moving so fast. The team discovered a new element know as "Element 115" That was the power core allowing that craft to go extremely fast. They called it a "Gravity Warp Drive." Sounds familiar.
Almost 25 years later NASA announces that they are working on a warp drive. Sounds fishy to me let me know what you think. Area 51 may actually have a UFO after all.
Just think about going from here to Alpha Centauri in less then two weeks. From here to Mars in 1-2 minutes that's fast.

I hope we have these in our life-time, technology these days are evolving alot faster and if there was a major need for the tech then it could be reasearch etc and less time, im just happy to see and hear that they are now actually working on making one even it failures or succeeds (hope it works) it still an achievement at last we will have more proof wither way it is can be possible or not (hope it is possible)
i would sooooo love for StarTrek to happen in RL, i think it would be awesome to serve on a starship and experience what they all did on the shows and to explore deep space and meet new encounters.
Well Star Trek Has been happened not the way we hope but I hope this warp drive works.
We have ipads which the first time I ever seen one was Star Trek TNG
Cells phone Star Trek TOS is where I seen one of those.
Flat screen tvs Just about all of Star Trek
The space shuttle Enterprise was named after Enterprise from the TOS.
Science researchers are working on what is known as Quantum Teleportation which you guessed it. it is Star Trek transporters. They've been working on that for years.

You are real simplifying warp drive. The ship itself never travels faster than the speed of light. The Warp bubble created by the warp nacelles acts similar to the folding space idea - bring points in space closer together.
This allows it to stay within the theory of Relativity where the closer to the speed of light you get the greater your mass becomes and the more energy required to move you. Meaning the ship and people inside would be crushed under their own mass the closer they got to the speed of light and the amount of energy required to move close to light speed would be like the energy produced from several suns. Staying within the "warp bubble" removes these laws.
First a Physics Lesson. The Alcubierre Drive required *Negative* Mass. Alcubierre took Einstein's Field equations, which were formulated to see how a given, known, realistic configuration of energy warps space, and decided to run them in reverse. He took a very convenient warping of space (one which would give FTL like effects) and ran Einstein's Field Equations in reverse. And the Answer was negative. There's no reason to believe negative mass is capable of existing just because you got it as an answer from math (which only approximates the universe) that you used in a way it wasn't intended to be used.
Now that I've hopefully convinced you that physics of the situation are most likely not real, and that there's no reason for you to think they could be, onto this supposed NASA employee.
I've glanced over the paper and it reads like a thought experiment. A "if we had this stuff/whatever that had these properties, We *could* do this" situation. Notice the euphemism exotic matter is used. Why do I say euphemism? Because exotic matter has a specific meaning: it refers to stuff which has properties you want, but probably doesn't exist and won't ever exist. Unobtainium and Handwaveium are pop culture euphemisms for the same thing.
Oh, one more note about the physics of it: If there existed a chunk of negative mass or energy, it would immediately begin cancelling with all the positive energy flux incident upon into nothingness. That is, even if you found a way to create some, it would immediately begin evaporating into absolute nothing.
Sorry; Not all avenues of tweaking math that approximates the universe under certain circumstances mean what you get is real. Alcubierre's paper (which actually was written to *disprove* warp drive) is like saying a real system has a real property that has an i (the imaginary number) component.
The warp drive creates a bubble around the ship. Space is folded up in front of the ship and expanded behind. Inside this bubble, the ship is basically surfing that wave. That's warp drive.
Yes I only simplified it I know about it creating a bubble and a folding of space. As far as the physics go NASA has found a loop hole around it they are saying its now possible. If I remember right didn't Star Trek ships use antimatter which we do have in real life.
It's been all over the place about this warp drive just look it up. I came to the STO fourms because we're all Star Trek fans in some way and know a lot about the sci-fi universe just looking for people openion on the subject.
You all have been very helpful. I'm just hoping we get to see other planets in person besides our own. To seek out new life and new civilizations.
