Suggestion for lockxes of the future.

The thread name says it all. This post is a suggestion to make lockboxes a much more welcome addition to the game. I joined the game at the start of the dominion feat. series, when the cardi boxes were out, and have seen them mature on to ferengi, had my first account destroyed due to account guard and a misplaced I, and then saw the tholian boxes come in, and now the temporal boxes in as well. All these boxes have something in common. They drop like dirt and the key to box ratio is about 1-500 according to my experience. Keys are about 1.5 million on the exchange, and since the only real way to get EC is through the time gated tour the universe and selling items, I struggle to maintain an account balance over 300k ec. Thus, to make keys cheaper and easier to obtain, my suggestion is the following. Make a small amount of keys available for free daily, via a doff assignment called something like this: hack lockbox locking mechanism to create key.
To start the assignment you would need the following-
5-10 lockboxes, all one type.
Duty officer- Fabrication specialist
Doff- Research lab scientist
Doff- Development lab scientist.

Casualty risk none.

The rewards would be something like the following.

Critical- 3 lockbox keys. 25 dilithium. 50% of lockboxes returned to you. development cxp.

Success- 2 lockbox keys. 10 dilithium, development cxp.

Failiure- 50% of LBs returned to you.

Disaster- nothing.

This assignment can be repeated once a day, with a 20 hr cooldown. It should be accessed via the operations officer in main engineering, under special projects.

I think that this move will make lockboxes a much more attractive proposal for f2pers like me, and severely lower the amount of hate the lockboxes are getting. Please don't nerf the rewards to be like unlocking the box, where it's either a deflector or one lobi. I really hope that this gets into the game, because to me, EC are hard to obtain and get spent too fast.

    Well,
we cant scan them to see if they're worth opening,
we cant tractor them while they're floating in space,
we cant replicate keys for them,
we can't pick them (to open them up)
when we space them we don't leave a trail of them behind our ships,

I'd almost say they don't really exist, except they take up mail space, bank space, inventory space.

Lol. If my starship torpedoes can punch through energy shielding and still damage the hull underneath, can't they blow open the lock on a tiny little box?

what if there was two different ways to open them? you could just open them and get

common or maybe an uncommon if you are lucky. Or you could use a key and get the rare

    prizes or a ship.

Sounds interesting, but that would cut into their profit margin...and they won't allow anything like that to happen.

What I'd like to see (since the lockboxes obviously aren't going to be going away) is that subscribed/lifetime accounts get <X> number of free unlocks a week/month. Free accounts over <Y> days old would get like 1 free unlock per week/month. And I say free unlocks, because if just master keys were handed out, they'd be hitting the exchange in no time and crashes prices on the keys...or jacking up prices considerably.

Although I do like the OP's idea of a duty officer assignment, I'd make the following changes. Instead of a 20 hour cooldown, I'd put it on one of the 2-3 day cooldowns. I'd also suggest it have a high casualty rate and a flat cost of say...like 500 dilithium.

Agree with the Doff assignment to open Lock Box. Makes the Spam bearable.
But I'd rather see the game-designer's time spend on issues like a Cardassian Faction or - even better - a ROMULAN faction. But I'm afraid they will use their time to launch a
Romulan Lock Box (Warbird), If they ever...

They said specifically that romulan ships wouldn't appear in lockboxes. However, the breen are an open lockbox possibility.

Make them bound to character and maybe it could work, but I sincerely doubt they would give us anything for free anymore.

Maybe the temporal ones, but the cardassian ones are from the dominion war, so my weapons should be able to take care of them.

I agree about the whol lockbox situation. They need to be more accessible. I think there should be a way you can purchase them with energy credits or or dilitium, especially if some people cant afford to purchase zen to go through the C-Store, like myself. That or a universal key for each lockbox race should be made availible.

At the moment in my bank inventory I have at least 120 lockboxes (which because of the count slot only going up to 20 is eatting up precious inventory space) and almost 20 lockboxes for both the Cardassians and Fernegi. And now there are Temporal lockboxes?

No to easy free keys via DOFF assignments, because those keys have value on the Exchange.

Maybe one free key on a Critical, and some random drop of a minor lockbox-like item otherwise. I'd imagine the cooldown would have to be a lot longer for Cryptic to even consider it, and the assignment might need to consume some amount of dilithium. To restrict it even further, it might be an Engineering assignment unlocked at Tier 3 or 4.

Even then, this proposal indirectly impacts pleas to make Lobi crystals account-bound. Any path to free Lobi potentially makes the odds of getting Lobi account-bound even worse.

Yes, but the increased availability of lobi crystals from the free keys would allow for more to be gained on all accounts, but I was never big on the lobi economy, so speak freely.
