Is this forum dying out?

szimszim Member Posts: 2,503 Arc User
Anyone else got the impression that this forum is slowly but steadily dying out? You can almost count the new post made in a day with one hand. There are almost no dev posts anymore and the "official" threads are hardly held up to date.

That's a pity. I think between all the hate and complaints an active and frequently used forum is a very important source for new ideas. And it is central for keeping up the player's interest in this game. A "silent forum" often marks the near end which I hope is not the case.

It's not really dying out. It's just full of KDF complaining about how unfair life is. You can't make a thread these days without some hardcore Klingon player derailing it.

So people don't bother making threads.

It's most likely quiet because there's not a lot going on at the moment with STO. We are between seasons and knowing cryptic they wont release any indepth information about season 7 till nearer the time.

Also a lot of people are probably getting burned out with the game and probably dont play much (if at all) and probably wont be very active till season 7 hits.

STO has always been like this, people come back (or join up) around the time a season hits, then after a month or 2 they go and play other games or other more interesting things, only the real die hards play all the time. Although in the past the Devs were more active on the forums so that would contribute to the talking.... These days the Dev's are a lot more quiet and we can only talk about the same old missions so many times.

Also, in many countries summer holidays are over, so people are getting back into different routines, favouring non-gaming activities for a couple of weeks.

I also suspect some people might be trying out Guild Wars 2; some of those will come back, some of them might not. Some of those who do might bring back new people, who knows?

Not really as I've seen it all before. I remember seeing a thread like this a year ago. it comes and goes in phases depending on the time of year, what is currently out, how close to a new season it is etc etc.

Its certainly not at its busiest but to be honest it usually flares up when something really bad is happening that causes a lot of controversy or something noteworthy like a FE series is being released.

we are in a between season, between content, between lockbox phase where there is just not a whole heap new to talk about. It will pick up again, and it will go quiet again.

I think you may be seeing burnout on the part of the players in many cases. Between the godaweful changes to the Forums and our accounts and the immense waves of indifference coming from PWE some of us have just thrown in the towel.

I used to be constructive and bring up new ideas but honestly I have since decided that I am fairly done with that. I will support those who deserve support and help to disillusion those who have serious misconceptions about the game or the company but it is hard to be motivated to do much else when I know I would be talking to a Wall.

Well, I would say that an awful lot of the old timers, both the haters (me) and the CDFers, have definitely either left, or cannot be bothered to post any more.

I understand when people say this is the "in between" seasons slowness, however, even at it's lowest, the forums still had a lot of posts, both positive and negative.

I think what you are seeing now that are left playing, are the real hardcore Star Trek fans that enjoy the game warts and all and I see very few negative posts any more.

Poor forums for a poor game now :)

I'm sure it will pick up when the next lock box is announced and they can continue to fleece the gullible :(.

I can only speak for myself but I switched from "visiting the forum several times a day" to "visiting the forum rarely".

The reason is that I got really tired of reading all the hate-Threads with always the same arguements... I started to visit these forums back in the days to get useful information or at least discussion but not to read people bashing the same things over and over again. Just take a look at the thread about the racing uniform for example...

I for one think the forums have just repeated threads now so I tend to skip a lot now. But I think this game is dieing until Season 7 comes out a people have gotten bored of fleet grinds and the lack of decent content in game. some of us like myself are holding out to see if some things chnge but even I am spending more time away from STO so possibly may not be here by Season 7 after all when a game dies we just find another.

Everyone else pretty much covered it. We are in the doldrums of news, so to speak. Lots of players are back in college/school, so they have less time to fiddle on the computer. We have beat the starbases and the Tholians to death, so that it not fun anymore. And we are in the middle of two Season updates. Those add up to very little activity on the forums short of trolls and whiners

That being said, the forums will pick up again once they start releasing more information about season 7. In fact, some of the newer threads I see are comments about the Reputation System that is suppose to release with Season 7.

There is no doubt there is far less traffic than there used to be. Why that is the case is open to interpretation.

I know a lot of people were turned off with the forum switch. Also, there are a lot fewer dissenting posts these days, due in part by the loss of several big names and the changes in forum rules.

Don't we still have cooldown on that? :P

To OP, in addition to everyone else's points we did just have a very unique "Ask Cryptic" this month. The poll and the followup posts by Dan Stahl pretty much absorbed alot of issues normally dispersed over multiple threads. So I'm going to guess everyone's could be catching their breath and reviewing the conversations in the "Ask Cryptic" thread.

Less storyline content less talk, more complaints, more grind less talk, what is there to talk about?

Season 6 should of launched at least 2 story arcs with 5 storyline missions based out of our star bases surrounding tne tne tholians. Instead of doing that we were deceived and forced to pay for fleet ships that should of been free as a season feature update.

I am going to say yes. There just isn't much to talk about right now. Could that change in the future? Yes, but a lot of people seem like they've hit a burnout point and we can only cross our fingers that they decide to come back. I'm not going to pat myself on the back and say 'only the hardcore Trekkers remain' because I know some hardcore Trekkers who don't even play this game. What would bring people to or back to this game? Well it seems like a Romulan faction is one answer judging from the Ask Cryptic for this month. Honestly, making the game more in line with Trek lore in canon is another. Like I stated, many hardcore fans that I know won't look at this game because it is still not Trek enough, although it has slightly improved in this area since launch. Finally, like the post above mine states, the development of story. The game hasn't had any advancement in it's story since the Romulan FE which was now 18 months ago. The trophy in my ship's crew lounge is still "No Kill I". :(

I think things have slowed down to a grind becuase the game has slowed down to a grind.
We as players need stories to follow as well as grind to work upon, and we do not really have it.
Many players have moved on or are playing other games for the time being.
Some players do not play STO becuase it does lack a fan desired level of Star treky-ness.

Or simply many have just gotten tired of the circular nature of the threads/forums in general and simply no longer visit.

Ah yes blame the KDF players for everything.

Sadly you both took Korhils bait. Ignore him when he waxs anti-KDF as he only does it to get a reaction for what ever entertainment it brings him in doing so.

The lack of Dev interaction and the lack of tantalizing tidbits of info have contributed to the forum decline.
Its a pity and a retrograde step. :)

It is not dying. There just isn't much activity at the moment. So far there have been only 13 news articles on the front page and if you remove the dilithium 101 repeats, foundry spotlights and wallpapers/screenshots then you are left with things like the tholian lock box removal announcement and starbase ship displays.

In the past it seemed busy because of things like dev blogs on upcoming content. This was for the duty officer system, starbase system f2p etc. They probably are not doing this with season 7 because they don't want spoilers for the story. the only thing they could tell us about is the embassy and the reputation system. Those systems are too early in developement by the sounds of it. With story being their primary focus means those other systems will not be ready as early as the starbase info.

If you want you can go into a Chris stoked pre-s6 conspiracy drought found here. You can also see a bit as to why there are less devs. Season 6 in my mind is a very good season.

We are in the same cycle as before but we are just a bit more experienced on silence. This is not the content drought of 2011.

    I don't think it's any one thing...

    * There's the "Oh, this thread again." experience,
    * The ever more deafening silence from the devs, as the few who communicated with any regularity jumped ship for all kinds of inocuous reasons no one here quite believes,
    * The growing number of community mods, who sometimes seem to adhere to the Harvey Dent school of decisionmaking when it comes to closing threads, which happens a lot more often now as a consequence, effective discouraging posting, and whose often idiotic actions Cryptic preemptively washes its hands of in their signatures,
    * And there's a whole lotta nothing to talk about.

I check the forums from time to time still, there's really nothing interesting going on though right now. Also a lot of topics are just a beaten dead horse being posted by the same group of people and that's just tiring to see.

To answer the OP's question: not at all :) It may seem a bit quieter to most for a few reasons: summer is ending, school is starting back up, and we're preparing for/ developing Season 7.

The devs are still posting (Dev Tracker), the Devs that don't post are still reading the forums daily, blogs and news posts are scheduled and will continue to come out, new Dev interviews are planned to release soon, and we will absolutely be talking about Season 7 in blog posts as we get closer to getting it on Tribble -- we really can't wait to start sharing some of the amazing features and content being introduced in it with you all.

STO is going to finish out 2012 with a bang, and 2013 is going to be even brighter and bigger. It's going to be awesome.

    Cheers,

I'm posting less frequent because of my higher work hours.
Another reason is tha there are few trhings to discuss. KDF is dying by decree of Cryptic and the Roms will be their replacement faction.

There are few things left in this game that keep me interested me anymore.
Sme of the more the vocal Anti-KDF guys didn't help either to keep me on the forums.

Sounds like it will be a bing bang for Fed fans at 2012 end.
