Just in case this hasn't been asked a million times (hang with me I'm new to the game) why isn't there a reverse engineering console at Memory Alpha? I mean, why couldn't we take equipment and disassemble it for its component data samples as opposed to getting fractions on the EC from vendors or hoping that someone will buy it on the exchange and then trying to craft?
You mean recycling in R&D. Reverse Engineering would be taking a piece of equipment and learn how to make more of it. Like obtain a Borg Engine and reverse engineer it so you can make more Borg Engines.

I think this would be a good idea. Give Crafters a way to disassemble non-unique items into data samples and maybe into plans. Sounds like a reasonable game mechanic and canon/IP fitting.
DO IT!

But, more importantly, it gives high level players a way to gain crafting skill without mass-producing JUNK!
Well, I used the term "Reverse Engineering" because, yes, the Replicator already has a recycler and it sounds a bit better than "Composter" or "Thing what takes other things apart" (which might be the literal Gorn or Klingon Translation. For this console or weapons as well. Anyway).
I think it would be a fairly easy formula to empliment based on the Mk. level and rarity of the item plus 1 point of R&D XP per item you reverse engineer. Sound good devs?
The way I see it, if you look at what REAL Reverse Engineering is, it's item duping.
Which is really at the heart of any crafting revamp I'd look at because it makes crafting recipes limitless.
What's needed for that is to have an internal, hidden price on everything which determines the success rate of it being duped relative to the materials needed.
And from there, I'd make it so that anything CAN be duped although things like STF gear might require exceptional luck or exceptional resources.
Then again, that depends on whether the copy is BoE or retains the binding characteristics of the original.
I like the idea of duped items being BoE because it means that if there's a Klingon item you REALLY want, you'll invest resources into duping it. You have a Klingon who reverse engineers that C-Store ship console, spending a few million dilithium in the process, and you have a copy that can be sold or sent to your Fed alt.
Actually, all I'm talking about is: take a non-consumable piece of equipment to a console, press the 'F' key and you get Data Samples from it and a point of R&D XP. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't dwell on the "Reverse Engineering" term I used. It's more of a 'Reclaiming' process.
So, instead of using the term "Reverse Engineering" use "Equipment reclamation". I simply thought that "Reverse Engineering" was a more colorful term. I had no idea that it would be taken so literally. The simple truth is that there is no way to impliment an open ended, "Reverse Engineering" crafting tableux from the development side of the game based on current game mechanics.
Since Champions already has a form of this idea in the ability to deconstruct materials in order to add bonuses and abilities to crafted items, I would imagine we'll end up with something similar or better, eventually.

Well, it looks good, but take any homogeneous mixture as an example. It's practically impossible to separate the core ingredients from each other.
That works, too.
DO IT!
