Sci Oddessy, Is there a reason to even try to fly another Cruiser?

So I was playing around with the Field Generator Consoles. And a quick explanation to what these do is they boost your base shield strength by 35%. Your Base shield strength as in what the shield says on it.

Putting 2 of them onto my Assault Cruiser made the numbers look weird, so I investigated further.

First off I fly it as a Tank, I have the MK 11 MACO shields with a base Strength of 6607 and I have 9 Ranks in Shield Systems worth roughly 2007 shield rating. And these numbers where taken around DS9 in real space not Sector Space. All results are per a facing.

8,614 Shield strength with none equipped.
10,927 Shield strength with one equipped. (Previous standard configuration)
13,239 Shield strength with two equipped. (New standard configuration)

Each console boosts my shield by 2312.45 (The first increase is 2313, the Second is 2312)

There are no diminishing returns what so ever.

Now looking at the Layout of the Sci Oddessy. 4 Eng, 4 Sci and 2 Tac. As an Oddessy it gets a bonus 15% to shields and with 4 Field Generators your looking at +155% to shields. Roughly I'd get a ship with 18,128 shields per facing. That's just getting ridiculous. And with the 2 Tac consoles your not losing much DPS as you still have Sensor Analysis and that will slowly bring it up to par.

I can run my exact same tanking setup, with a slightly slower turn (and if I got the 3 pack I can throw in the Saucer Seperation and probaly out handle my Assualt) but nearly double the Shield Strength.

Surely this is a hideous bug that needs to be straightened out or I've made a horrible miscalculation somewhere. I think the only fair thing to do it limit the Field Generator to 1 per a ship. But until than you Fly a Sci Oddessy or if you want a Free ship a Star Cruiser for 15k of shields. And if your a Klingon, well you don't get many Science Consoles so good luck.

Known issue, Cryptic is working on a fix for the shield console stacking issue (per latest stocked episode)

I can't understand the reason to fly a sci odyssey over a engineer or tactical one. Theres no commander science boff station like other tier 5 science ships losing out on the ability of GW 3 ect,
The commander engineer should be turned into the sci station and the lt sci should be engineer for this ship.
Once they fix the shield stacking you have a tier 5 sci ship that can't use a sci officers top power.

The odyssey def seems to be more flexible for a engineer and tact toon over a science one

Fleet member suggested to use the engineering version of the oddy over sci or tactical on my tac officer. I did and now i survive and do more damage than the others. I really prefer it after trying all of them.

i use the tact version simply for the 3rd tact console slot raises weapons power from 946 to 1013 unsure of dps at present. Although i find science is the weakest of all my toons in space but 2nd strongest on the ground after my engineer.

Personally for a sci ship i find either the nebula is a very good ship or for extra fire power and good healing abilities the Luna class is expectional with its 3 tact console slots. Same flat rate weapon power as a cruiser but all the science buffs

    @doylematt4

I'm not using it as a Sci Vessel I'm using it as a Cruiser, Engineer heavy running pretty much the same BOFFs as the Assault Cruiser. So the currant shield bug would make it overpowered.

Thanks for the informative reply Sardoc. Even running a pair of Field Generators on my Assault Cruiser feels broken.

I love the sci odd, of all the ships, I find it to be the one I prefer. I tried Escorts. I suck in them, I tried Sci Ships, but They do not have the durability the Odd does.

I would like to know why they did not put a Sci command slot on the Sci and the same for the Tac.

Why Eng Comm slots on all "science" and "tactical" oddy?

The reason that they have eng comm slots on all oddys is because in the end it is a cruiser. And cruisers are built for engis. The cruiser type simply adds a little oomph to that class, take the assault cruiser and the star cruiser for ex. The assault cruiser is used for fighting and is designed to deal a little more damage, hence the extra tac slot, whereas the star cruiser is designed for sci and support roles, hence the additional sci console. But BOTH ships have 4 eng consoles, and both ships have a comm eng slot. So again, in the end, regardless of purpose and specialty, both are cruisers, so both will be engi based. The same goes for the oddies. You will notice they are named tactical odyssey CRUISER and science odyssey CRUISER.

    Just my $0.02.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once. B)

I love my Sci Odd. Its a cruiser though. But one of my favorite ships.
