    And you noticed this...now?
    Seriously?
That's been an issue since the very first image of the NX-01 appeared in promo pics.

Siriously erm no, I have known for a while and just wanted to read people's thoughts , so no need to be like that about it.

When you begin your post with "has anyone noticed" it makes you sound like you noticed it just now.:)

Maybe that's just the way you interpret ate it, just generally asking.

The NX exterior was directly inspired by the Akira. Source: NX Class Scroll to 'Final Exterior Design'.

Well, it seems the B&B wanted to use an Akira for "the show after Voyager" due to the ship's general popularity.
Afterwards they decided to set the show over a century before TOS.
Since Berman never cared for any Trek before he came into Trek (pretty much meaning TNG) and Braga never cared for continuity anyway they decided to use the Akira the way she was.
Zimerman managed to convince them to at least make a few changes to the ship.

I still consider the outside a horrible anachronism while I actually like the ship on the inside for the most part.

Yeah, this is really old. Also general Trek discussion, not STO specific.

i rather wish Doug Drexler's idea of taking the Daedalus class and giving it a CGI makeover had been done instead.. it would have been the logical point in the aesthetic development of trek ships, and IMO, the daedalus is sexy, in a utilitarian way.

I'm a huge fan of the NX-class. I'd love them to give the basic design the 2409 make over and put it out as an escort. Doesn't need the T1 skin, just give us something with the same basic config.

They do have a similar design, but I feel they're different enough that the NX stands on its own. It's a beautiful ship, too.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

I love how it got dubbed the Akiraprise.

Also if you mix the armitage and thunderchild pieces just right you end up with the akirandy.

    Dervish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

The Patrol Escort and variants always looked like huge Peregrine Fighters to me. :)

The Akiraprise was a good moniker as well.

While it was admitted that the NX was inspired by the Akira, the Akira was actually inspired by the "NX" as well:

(BTW, this concept was reborn as the 2009 Star Trek movie).

While the resemblance of the NX-class to the Akira (or vice versa) is hard to deny, I don't think that necessarily has to be such a big issue to fans. Remember the old ironclad monitors and rams from the American Civil War era? Compare this image of a 1/3-scale model of my favorite ironclad, the CSS Albemarle, to the design of the new stealth "destroyer" USS Zumwalt. Don't they look rather alike?

    Albemarle:

    Zumwalt:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/USS_Zumwalt_%28DDG-1000%29.jpg

Not exactly the same of course, but the general shape is similar. Both were meant to be stealthy and the Albemarle's sloping sides deflected cannonballs just as the Zumwalt's shape will deflect radar.
