Just a basic question that I thought I would post. If you prefer one over the other, how come?

Since I am a science officer, I'll definitely have to say ground, lol

Honestly though, I am bored of space combat. Also, the the whole star trek esthetic seems to be present on ground content, while space content is just backdrops.

Space, because ground is always laggy and jerky (and yes, I've attempted to fix it by adjusting the settings), and I never really liked it that much. If I want to play a shooter game, I'll buy a PS3 and play shooter games on that instead, because it does a much better job. Either that, or I'll play actual shooter games or other first-person ground games on the PC that do the job better than STO.

Ground content is a waste of time in this game, imo, and the resources should be put into expanding space combat and content.

Star Trek is a show about people, so ground has always been where I most feel like I'm identifying with my character; but space combat is more exciting in this game.

So if you told me "go have 5 minutes of combat", I'd pick space every time; but if you told me "go play the game for two hours", I'll undoubtedly spend most of that time on the ground somewhere.

    Space FTW.

I did like the old fast pace of ground from around mid-2011 though.

    Edit:

Oh, and the misfiring of commands is far more severe in ground play. That's really annoying.

I think what STO has done best is Space Combat, this is the best and most fun space combat experience I've ever had in any game, period, especially an MMO. STO got space combat right, it is is strong point. Therefore, I really like space combat.

That said, STO improved ground combat a lot in that big update prior to f2p where they introduced first person shooter mode and revamped the ground combat. That really improved upon ground a lot and has made ground a lot more fun in this game than it was.

What do I like best? Nothing beats space combat, but ground is now a close second thanks to the revamp.

What I really like to see in a STO mission is a balance of both space and ground combat. I don't like missions that are so one sided, or focused on things like puzzles. It's one reason I really like the Breen FE a lot (their first FE they ever did) it balances space combat and ground combat well in that FE, unlike the latest FE which seems to introduce a lot of puzzles, I l don't like puzzles.

Space Combat for me. It just feels so right.

Ground has gotten a lot better though, I used to dread getting ground missions in exploration clusters before the ground combat revamp. You'd come up against a group with multiple medics and engineers and you could practically watch an episode of star trek in the time it took to kill that one single group.

Space for me too. Although the occasional ground mission is ok from time to time.

Space combat by a hilariously large margin.

Not that I hate ground, mind you. Shooter mode is clunky but fun, and it's nice to see those BOffs and costumes I spent so much time getting like I want them in action. Space is just so much better.

Unquestionably space. People can whine about this or that aspect, but STO's space combat is the closest you're going to get to an actual simulation of realtime ship-to-ship combat without getting bogged down by numerous miniscule details.

Ground combat? Meh, it's about as good as the show, which is to say it's roughly equal parts bonafide action, useless filler, and random clusterhump. Ground combat in Star Trek has never made much sense, TBH. You've got so many milennia of military history to draw on, there's no excuse whatsoever for going into action without some sort of personal protective gear.
Arc is garbage. End of discussion.

    hmm tough question

In short, i like both, but dislike flaws in both too..

    Space
(for me when joining) It was a more complex 'Star Trek: Legacy' (pc game which i was addicted to) a lot more to tak into consideration and a lot more entertaining. But the draw back to space is either it takes too long, or goes too fast..

Long - fighting some space bosses with a low dps team.. or pvp where everyone's a tank.
Short - People who are speced to blow you up before you can get close to damaging them in pvp.
Sometimes space can get a bit same-y too. click cannon and buffs, the odd debuff, fly in a straight-ish line, boom, next, repeat, boom, next.

    Ground:
Ground i LOVE, its fast paced, its quick, its a case of 'i see yo... holy hell im dead' ? O.o'
The fact that our abilities are limited to our character choice is wonderful! no cross synergy of a tact in a sci ship or an eng tanking in most ships...

The abilities are diverse, some kits better than others, and pvp is fun!

    Downsides..:
Pvp the match is decided in the first 5kills, and becomes a match of overwhelmed and spawn campers. (eng are the worst for it. mines/bombs..)
Also there are people who play to their strengths (tactics that CANT be beaten easily)

e.g. Eng laying mines in doorways and running away, you cant follow. Tacts 1hko with operative kits., Sci being a super tank of healing (i remeber being 2 vs 3 all of us kinda inexeperianced, the 3 enemies using crm-2000s yet i managed to out tank and use sci abilities to overwhelm THEM, e.g. become invisible with neural neutrilzer and shard of poss, tactyhoning their shields down and pulsewaving, and ferngi whipping if they ran away >:D while tanking with borg analyser.

In short i like them both, but both have severe let-downs

    Definitely Space.

Ground in STO is clunky, awkward, boff's that get stuck, lost, or seem to forget that they actually have abilities to use, and I'm not impressed by the graphics. Add to that the often-times bad dialog (I hate it when two NPCs are standing 30 feet away from each other and you have to run back and forth between the two for 10 minutes clicking through useless dialog).

Weapons 4 times larger than they should be, boffs and NPCs that run around at un-realistic speeds, weapons that point the wrong way yet still hit the target, maps that simply don't make sense that are 10 times larger than they should be just to keep the boffs from getting stuck...

I love a good story, but ground in STO is just filler in my opinion, space in Star Trek has always been where it's at. For ground combat, I go to BF3, for space I come here.

I like Both equally. although there are times where i feel the urge to come online and get straight into a nice ground battle with my away team. So maybe ground a teeny tiny bit more? Although its rly close.

Space. I agree with the others who feel they nailed it. A testimonial to that would be the fact I've got a few hundred space STF's under my belt and I have yet to do a single ground one.

The ground combat has grown on me a little, since I started. I used to dread ground missions. Now, it's not bad, especially with a good story.

If they were to come on here and just announce they were going to induct this kind of gameplay, I would go Gold immediately, just to support it. Hell, maybe even become a lifer.

I think STO space combat with Elite Force ground combat would simply be the perfect Star Trek game.

    Oh. Wow.

Just tested my new Foundry mission "The Inner Darkness."

You seriously haven't done ground combat until you've done it on the Sao Paulo ship interior.

    That stuff just got REAL.

Tight spaces with functional walls that act as cover. They seem to have BO pathing good enough that it works like a dream in there. Loved watching my BOs huddle into the turbolifts.

I have enjoyed them both. Space is good on graphics and fighting style. And its proven as a good challenge. Ground is good as well. Good challenge and I can see all the time I put into each outfit on my Bridge Crew.

What I don't like on them is a few things. Space, ships get stuck on an asteroid and you can't do nothing with them. Most common is the enemy one. I don't see this often, but can be a pain to deal with. Ground my crew don't use the skills right or forget to use them. That is annoying at times, but I can deal with it. Worst thing is they get stuck and you have to wait for them to catch up. Like on a rock or around stuff. Also some of the ground features can be improved on as well. Like able to swim and other small details.

Basically I enjoy them both. Space I get a bigger challenge, ground more funny things happen for a good laugh. I have yet done a ground mission without laughing.

Space combat, definitely! I'm a Sky Pilot not a Ground Pounder! Wanna know what they call someone who sails into battle in command of a ship? Captain! Wanna know what they call someone who rides into battle in a mechanized unit? Commander! Wanna know what they call someone who walks into battle with a rifle slung over their shoulder? Cannon Fodder! :P

Seriously, though, if I wanted ground pounding action there's a HOST of action MMO's out there that I could choose from.

Far fewer to choose from if you want to sail a ship in to battle (whether in space or on the sea)... and even fewer that are any good.

More to the point STO should be providing FAR more than combat... exploration/discovery/problem solving of the non-violent sort should be the primary offering here... even KDF side. :D
*STO* It’s mission: To destroy strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations... and then kill them, to boldly annihilate what no one has annihilated before!

Space. It's a little more varied in what I can do. Do I pound away at him from a distance? Do I sabotage his systems and barrage him up close? Do I Alpha Strike him? Do I force a battle of Attrition?

Ground is fun... but it's a lot more straightforward and therefore gets old real fast. Sure I have a lot of abilities, but they only do one of three things: make me do more damage, summon something to help me out, or heal something. Other than that, there's not much else but shoot stuff. There's no real planning or strategy involved. There's a little bit, but not enough that it keeps things like STF's or Ground Missions in general interesting for long periods of time. I just wish that ground combat was a little more random.
