I agree with this... Borg engines are nice for the speed, but you HAVE to get rid of them eventually to get the STF set bonuses... and it sucks to lose that speed.
My Hegh'ta BoP even with BORG engines in transwarp was only doing Warp 20.00. Give the KHG set a speed bonus in sector space! (and the maco, and the omega force, you get my point?)
They just need to add a 4th piece to each stf set and make non-stf gear worth using.
I honestly think that people should have the functional option of using 'regular' shield/engine/deflectors over the STF sets.
Simply make those have one or two two stats/bonuses of really high amount. Just two.
And have the STF sets have many stats/bonuses at decent amounts.
So, for example, the STF Honor Guard shield is covariant type high shield hp, 20% plasma resist and has a proc effect.... thats fine. Make the 'regular' covariant shields have very,very high shield HP (twice that of the STF HG shield) ... the 'regular' resilient shield have a built in 10% all energy resist and ZERO bleedthrough... the regular regenerative array have a very,very high regen rate and the 'regular, regular' shield array have a balance of all other 'regular' shields: decent shield hp, 5% bleedthrough, and decent regeneration rate along with efficient at low power settings.
This alone allows for wide variety of ship templates without sacrificing the combo benefits of the stf sets. It allows mix and match... maybe a 2-set plus 2 'regular' items performs better for the player's needs than any given STF set 4-piece combo? It might. Imagination is the limit.
It shouldnt have to be part of a set because they are so TRIBBLE they make it all have to be of the same mk lvl to get bonus. It should be inherent to engines, and you should get the set bonus regardless of what mk level the items are.
That's because the Borg engines operate on Borg technology. Namely, transwarp capability.
Personally, I'd prefer to see a set upgrade to STF gear. I'm certain Omega Force gear is only standard Starfleet. I would think of combining Borg STF and Omega Force gear. Knowing Perfect World, I'd expect a Lobi purchase for this upgrade.

Thanks for the pro tip. Thanks for giving exhibit A on why its pointless to make them slower. Anytime you can remove pointless tedium from the game you should do it. Its not rocket science. Not to mention they give this awesome graphic effect on maco engines that...no...one...uses...because its eclipsed in effectiveness by something that cost 1/8th as much. Hur Dur.
You know, there's nothing stopping you from just keeping a Borg engine with you, and swapping to it when you need to cross vast distances in sector space. It's what I do, and it works just fine.
I didn't know there were folks that didn't use the 3/4 Borg + MACO Shield trick XD
In all honesty I do believe the Omega Force engines should at least have the boost to sector speeds, I know the MACOs do to a point, but I'm OK with them not being as quick, as the borg have always surpassed starfleet/KDF engineers in faster-than-warp travel.

Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.
Here's an idea: Switch out between Borg and Maco/Omega whenever you go from Sector Space to combat. it's that simple.
Just because they are combat-statistically better engines does not mean that MACO or Omega engines are statistically FASTER.

If you make one item have every desirable quality, then nobody ever uses any other item, and you wasted your time making more than one item.
Choices are good.
Yes choices are good. But instead of giving each set a very good unique attribute it feels like all of the end game very rare sets are more or less equal. The differences are really small. And given that you spend DAYS grinding for the MACO or OMEGA set they should be better than anything else.
It would be nice to have the possibility to increase a certain feature of an item analog to enchantments in other MMOs. Either through crafting (best idea), dilithium or - if it must be - through Lobi crystals. I imagine something like:
+2 turn rate
+10 shield generators
+500 to shields
...
I know the idea isn't new but I think this would be a great idea for STO.
