You can't promote your Bridge Officers to Captain. The highest rank for them is Commander.

Because your character is 'the' Captain.
The game doesn't support it at this point.

promoting BO's to captains could likely happen with the introduction of 1 of 2 things.

    1. the first officer to player character thing they brought up when they introduced the department heads system... but they have to finish that before it can happen.

    2. fleet admiral. could likely promote several of your BO's to become "captains" of other ships in your personal fleet, and they captain the NPC ships that would accompany you on space missions like bridge officers on the ground.

Agreed with the above posters. Besides, there isn't really a mechanic for BOFFs higher than Commander in terms of space or ground abilities. I have, however, heard rumors of the same future changes that tenkari spoke of...higher rank(s) of Admiral, and the possibility to somehow promote/upgrade/transform a BOFF into a playable Captain. No idea if or when such things might happen.

Simply put: you'd be giving them permission to abandon your crew in order to go pursue their own ship to fly. They wouldn't have to stick around.

Captains don't always have command. In fact, I believe an Admiral's first officer is customarily a captain without a commission.

That said, we still don't have a first officer system.

Generally speaking in navel terms "captain" was the rank at which you could command any ship in the fleet, basically it was the rank required to command the largest warships or "ships of the line".

Any rank above captain, (commodore upwards) usually implied command of more than one ship.

By that logic, anyone of level 40+ should be ordering around more than one ship at a time. . .

Spock was a Captain in the movies under Admiral Kirk. Scotty might have been as well. I know they refereed to him as Captain Scott alot in Relics.
