To summarise: Nice if you want an aggressive dps-oriented cruiser (doubly so once the fleet version hits, about which the video has a little speculation). Wide angle torp is a definite selling point, perhaps more so than the console and there's just a hint in the way the game is handling the launcher that the [Arc] modifier could be used elsewhere (Ultraviolet Fleet gear?). Aesthetics are a matter of personal taste but...well, I tweaked the pylons and the paint job in the end.

Value for money....hm. Not really. This is always going to be a subjective judgement but my personal opinion is that stuff like this ought to be <$10, maybe edging to $15 for premium content - basically if it's more than the kind of cash you normally carry as pocket change or could spend on impulse without thinking then it's probably overpriced. $25 for a skin/mesh variant, torpedo, console and BOff layout...about $10 too much, imo.

Overall verdict: Worth getting, but not worth $25. Wait for sales or grind up the dilithium and spend someone else's money instead.

    Great Review!

Early in my career, I loved the Sovereign on my Engi but just didn't hold up to the newer ships coming off the line. Many have been requesting a refit for quite some time but for me, I think that ship has sailed, as it were, and have been looking forward to more unique and exotic ships down the road.

Not to mention that I learned my lesson in gimmicks with the Galaxy-X. She wasn't a bad ship before the F2P/Dilithium Conversion but many of the changes to the game since then have also made it somewhat obsolete.

For now, I'm probably going to have to give this ship a pass. Although the Fleet version on Tribble looks quite nice.

Ty for the tip on the Captains Skill. I had mistakenly thought I HAD points in Particles, but after watching your video I thought I'd best double check. I actually had Graviton. So I changed that up! I already was running plasma so all good on that front!

Ty also for the bit on the friendly fire. I'd been assuming that at least some damage was coming from the cloud but that demo sure says otherwise. So I'm safe from my own space TRIBBLE. \o/

    Shameless self promo.

I'm a huge Sovereign fan and I have to say for me it is totally worth it. I'm really enjoying it right now. Here is my feedback:

Boff layout: Very good. The LtCom Tac and Ens Tac really adds the punch may of us wanted for the Sovereign. The price for this gain is a slight loss in ENG from LtCom to Lt. I can still tank well...not as great as the original but good enough to survive, even against huge mobs in Fleet actions. The Lt Universal is awesome as it gives more versatility. I know majority of people will go for the balanced approach by slotting a science there. But by slotting another TAC there, it'll make it the most Tactical of all Fed cruisers without losing too much in the tanking department. Of course, you can slot an ENG there for even more tanking. In a nutshell, sad to lose the LtCom ENG but the gains in Tac and increased versatility with the Lt Universal is well worth it.

Wide angle Quantum Torpedo Launcher: Great!!!! At least for the slow turning cruisers. It makes a torpedo build more viable for cruisers. May not be useful for fast turning ships as it doesn't have as high damage or DPS as other purple (very rare) Mark XII quantums. Perhaps it can use a little buff up. Just wish that this launcher allowed the torpedos to come out of the Launcher under the saucer in the sovereign model instead of under the deflector.

Metron gas cannister console: Very interesting but the jury is still out as I have not learned to use this properly yet. But love the effects and the explosion. But people have said it is more bark than bite.

Visual design: good work JamJamz! Actually the model design looks better than I thought. It is a worthy 25th century version. However, I'm a purist and absolutely love the original sovereign design, so I swapped to original skin.

Compared to other Tactical cruisers: As I mentioned earlier, it has the potential to be the most tactical of all Fed cruisers (even than the tactically oriented Odyssey), if you slot another Tactical in the Lt Universal. But I know most will slot a Science there for balance. Still with the Science there, it is essentially similar to the Excelsior retrofit, but the sovereign has an extra ENS TAC while the Excelsior has the extra ENS ENG. However the big advantage the Excelsior retrofit has is its Turn Rate. But that can be mostly negated by the wide angle Quantum torpedo launcher. Captain Geko did an awesome job of giving us an improved Sovereign refit without making the other tactical cruisers obsolete. The Excelsior retrofit is slightly less tactical than the Sovereign refit now but it is still a viable tactical cruiser, as a fast-moving/turning and hard-hitting cruiser option.

Also we have to keep in mind that this Sovereign refit is a variant of the the classic sovereign. It is not the next tier up. So it does not make the original obsolete. It only offers a different option. The original sovereign is still in my mind the most balanced cruiser with a great balance of attack and defense. This new variant pushes this cruiser a little bit more in the "attack" direction in the continuum, losing a little in defense as a result.

For now, I'm probably going to have to give this ship a pass. Although the Fleet version on Tribble looks quite nice.

I bought the Regent class myself, and although I don't regret the purchase, I have to agree with your assessment - if you're sitting in an Odyssey for four months waiting for a Sovereign refit, and you stick with the Odyssey long enough, it starts to grow on you as you learn to use its strengths and mitigate its weaknesses. Eventually you start getting very much used to it. I don't yet know if I'm going to be switching the Ody for the Regent as my "main" ship, though I do have a few unique factors in play for myself (e.g. do I want to role-play a captain under 30 years old and somehow managed to land a flagship-class ship? Not impossible given the storyline but stretching things a bit).

In more pragmatic terms, there's also the question of how much the Excelsior-R competes with it - for $5 less, no less. They're very similar in terms of performance. There might still be a bit of the sting of having the Excel-R outright outperform the AC in many respects still there, though I think the Regent has taken that out, and merely made people think a bit more carefully about picking up a ship that's $5 more without a whole lot extra. I would argue that the Excel-R has agility and a little more tanking in exchange for the AC-R's extra firepower - and it's possible that the Excel-R still wins this, at least for some applications (e.g. making it a cannon cruiser).

I also think part of it is the feeling that this is essentially attempting to drag out the idea of a Sovereign refit over buying MULTIPLE ships. First the Regent, then the Fleet AC for the "real" Sovereign-R, which you have to pay an extra $5 for every toon after grinding a starbase for a year (assuming you bought the C-Store version so you get that discount). They were relying on the Sovereign's popularity for this, and while I have still noticed no shortage of Sovereigns flying around, the number of AC-R's seems to be at a premium. The new Sovvy is part of a new approach to selling ships, I suspect, wherein half the ship's appeal is gated behind the fleet ship system.

For anyone who may be wondering about it, she is not a bad ship by any stretch, and a very a solid cruiser, especially if you want more firepower but don't want the slower Odyssey. But you may not be getting quite what you hoped for out of it. She is very much a tactical version of the original AC, with the pluses and minuses that may carry with it. That said, that torp's one hell of a bonus. Haven't tried the Riker Maneuver enough to endorse or condemn it, but I do know I love that torpedo.

I recently put my Tac character into the Odyssey Tac because I was just not happy with the Advanced Escort for the way our tiny fleet has evolved, and the way that PvE gameplay is currently.

I'm not totally happy with the Odyssey as, it's just too porky. So my question is, and this is aimed mostly at the thread starter, Can the Advanced Heavy Cruiser Refit (Excelsior) work as an impromptu Tactical Cruiser? My Engineering character does very well with it, but I have concerns about putting a Tac guy in the chair. I'm not ready to spend another $25, so I'm wondering about using the AHCR as a substitute Tac Cruiser.

I willingly admit that I am far from the most knowledgeable player in the game, so any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes, Yes, Yes....the Excelsior retrofit is a great tactical cruiser. Prior to the
Sovereign refit, it was one of the most tactical of cruisers. It has a LtCom TAC station and has the best turn rate amongst Tier 5 cruisers. So it a great, more affordable alternative. Plus with a Com ENG, LT ENG, and ENS ENG stations, you can tank very well. This ship has been the ship of choice for many tactical cruiser captains.
