Has the penalty for being defeated increased?

Haven't been on the forums for a LONG time. Haven't played STO in that time either but I'm thinking of making a comeback once I'm done doing what I need to do. When I left, they'd implemented injuries and damage for toons and ships respectively but even though I'd been blown up more than a few times, especially during that Borg Incursion with the Unicomplex, and never recieved critical damage, which you'd think a starship blowing up would tend to do, if nothing else.

Since season 6, I've read that the Borg are harder. That I will actually fear the sight of a Borg Cube (as opposed to engage a group of them and emerge victorious with a single ship and no supporting fleet). I'm excited at the prospect of this, however with this added danger, I was wondering if being destroyed had more of a penalty?

STO used to let you off pretty easy when you blew up a ship and lost all hands. Then they implemented the damage system but from my experience, I seldom got damage from blowing up... Granted we probably can do without the Eve Online "once it's gone, it's gone" approach (I'm game for it but I doubt that will get much support) but dying has no real penalty. Not even financially (in-game). Has this since been looked at, so as to include a hefty and expensive repair bill?

I reckon we'd all take a lot more care and team up a lot more than normal (it is called StarFLEET after all, and a fleet is a group of two or more ships...) if there was a lot more riding on us being destroyed than having to wait for however long the respawn counter takes now... Just a thought, what are yours? Are you game enough to take more risks? Don't get me wrong, I'd be out of pocket after two or three defeats but hey...the aim of the game is "don't die", right?

You only take injuries if you're playing on Advanced or Elite Difficulty. Normal Difficulty doesn't do damage that needs to be healed/repaired by an outside source.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

On normal the only "penalty" is the respawn timer, which doesn't increase during regular PvE (but does in STFs).

I don't fear Borg cubes. They don't worry me at all unless I'm in an elite STF, and even then I can take them down if I play carefully. Tactical cubes on the other hand... those are scary. :P

Like the OP posts. You only get them on Advanced or Elite Difficulty. Now, Elite has a better chance of the injury being worse, and they do stack. So, you will want to do the tutorials about injurys if you have not already, because that will get you started with some ground and some ship heals. You will want to keep at least 5 of each type on you at all times. Hope this helps.

I'm not much for the ''hefty repair bill'', I already have enough difficulty keeping my EC above 1m as someone who doesn't farm STFs all day anymore.

I'm quite happy with STO giving the option. There are large camps on each side of the issue. I prefer a penalty that smarts if I fail, it makes not failing feel like more of an accomplishment and adds extra excitement during tough engagements.

There is a bug right now where you can sustain injuries injuries on normal difficulty for special events like Borg invasions and stuff though. The other day I ended up getting a couple while defending Alpha Centauri. The wierdest part was that one of my bridge officers sustained broken ribs as a result of my ship getting destroyed. Explain that one. I didn't even do any ground combat that day!

I honestly forgot about that bug. I hadn't seen it in a few days and wasn't thinking about it.

Come to think of it, one of my bridge officers ended up with a concussion after a normal mission, but he'd never been knocked out that I remembered...

Perhaps he got trampled in the rush to get to the lifeboats?

Hey guys, appreciate the responses. I won't be able to make my way back among the stars until much later in the year. Don't you just love it when work gets in the way of your fun? Still...pays the bills so I guess I can't complain too much. Anyways, looks like I'll be increasing my difficulty to Elite when I get back in. I assume it's a general difficulty setting and not 'per mission'?
