With the addition of the Combat EV Suits to the C-Store & the Account Bank, I figured "Surely, this is a perfect oppurtunity to employ some awesome new tech people have been asking for since probably before launch", but that does not seem to be the case.
I'm speaking, of course, of the elusive "Account Bound" status I know a lot of player would love to see. We know have a bank that let's us easily transfer items between toons on one account, but the Ev Suits are a "per character" unlock. Which causes me to wonder if they are truly worth it for those of us, like me, that are Gold Accounts with 13+ toons.
I understand not making the Combat EV Suits tradable/Exchangable/Mailable, but not being able to transfer them (and some other items) to another one of our own toons makes me wonder if it's truly worth spending 700 Zen on.
I understand it's a combat item, and it's Very Rare, but I still think it's an awful steep price to pay for something that you can only use on one out of 13+ characters. If Cryptic doesn't want to employ the "Account Bound" tech, they could at least make some things like these Combat EV Suits Account-Wide unlocks, and then just add them in the Legacy Unlocks section of the in-game C-Store. So, why not?
What do you guys think?
Is this one Character Bound item worth $7 each on 13+ toons, or should Cryptic finally introduce the "Account Bound" tech for Star Trek Online?
Should they just make them an Accouont-Wide Unlock, or are you happy with their purchase protocol as-is?
What items do you think STO would benefit from being made "Account Bound"?
Keep in mind that I, for one, have many other items in mind which I think the game would benifit from being made "Account Bound. I just didn't have time to add them in this post.

I agree that 700zen/character is indeed far too high.
Looking at previous c-store costume goodies, this is twice the price and per character. Ludicrous.
Well, I think the main trouble here is that this is NOT a costume piece. It is a Combat Item which boosts certain stats when worn. That's probably the main reason it's Per-Toon.
However, this gives me another idea: Why not just make a Costume Version which does NOT change any of your stats that IS an Accoount-Wide Unlock?!
It would be yet another potential micro-transaction that I'm sure a lot of players would be happy to pay up to 700 Zen for. I know I would.
Although it should probably be priced more like the existing Account-Wide Costumes.

IF this would be Accound Bound, i might even buy one.
BUT you can't make a FED specific item account bound, because then Klingons could get the item...
and as previous items have shown (that Shuttle Engine that went in the Exchange by mistake, that Salami Inferno ended up buying in masses ;P ) if the Klinks get their hands on it, they can USE it.
So unless there is some FED / KDF faction limitation to items that i'm not aware off, this could end badly.
Still, i agree i have 11 Chars.
11 x 700 Zen + 19% VAT = $90+
Account Unlock or GTFO!
...not to mention that those suits work only for 3 Maps, and there isn't even any Zero-G Combat in-game.
Magnetic Boots? Walking up walls? nope... engine can't do it.
Look at Mass Effect and Dead Space to see how Zero-G Combat is done in a cool way!
Get back to me when you manage to do more than slap a *burn up if you don't wear it*-button on a map that is just like any other map otherwise... dirt ... and default gravity... default walking animations...
not even low gravity on Nukara... what a Joke.
And why aren't the Maco / Omega / KHG XII versions, you know, the ones with Helmets? not working as EVA Suits?
You would think with all those buttons and helmets they would be the perfect 2409 Zero-G combat suit?
Nope, wouldn't cost any Zen for the Player... and can't have it that previous endgame items are any good for the next tiny piece of endgame.

Yea!
We talked up an epic post from one of my FAVORITE forum posters!
WooT!
Actually, there IS a FED / KDF faction limitation to items that you might not be aware of.
I once bought a Chef DOff off of the Exchange so I could execute a DOff mission. I think it was the Entertain Foreign Dignitaries DOff mission.
Anyways, this Chef turned out to be a KDF Chef Doff, and I CANNOT use her, even though the DOff system thinks I DO have a Chef I can use for the mission seeing as it no longer says "You do not have a required Duty Officer".
Same item, crossed factions, but can only be used by one.
The tech is there . . . now.
I have proof right in my bank.
I'd be willing to show it to anyone that asks me in-game today in the next 3.5 hours.

EDIT: I also emailed a Canon from one of my KDF guys to one of my Starfleet guys and it DID enter into my inventory, but my Starfleet guys couldn't use it.
So, again, the tech IS there, and I actually did that before the debacle that you spoke of took place.
Seriously, I can't believe that situation with the Chef DOff even happened.
I tried to submit a ticket about it, but I can't seem to find a record of it. So I don't know if it ever went through or not.

But DOffs aren't exactly inventory items, they have their own little UI / inventory bag system.
I have to keep an eye out if there are any FED / KDF limiters on any other items...
Like I said, I mailed a ship weapon from a KDF to a Starfleet, and everything worked, but the Starfleet toon couldn't equip the cannon because it was limited as a KDF-only item.
There ya go.

What items do you think STO would benefit from being made "Account Bound"?
700 Zen is just not worth it. Not even close. If it were an account unlock, I might've considered it a good deal or even a bargain. As is, 250 Zen would be highest acceptable price for a single item such as this. If the item were bind-to-account, so I still get just the one suit, but I can move it to another character should I ever want to, for say RP reasons, then... I don't know. I think that might straddle the difference. Not quite happy, not quite outraged.
And it's the one thing they can do that won't break the game. (Turn it into an account unlock, and it stops being sellable on the exchange. People who invested a great deal of Zen into these to make EC, foolish though they may be, would be screwed if that happened. Likewise, anyone who already purchased one of these from the Z-store for whatever reason would be right to cry foul if now the cost of the individual item were lowered.)
Third option... this is supposed to be standard issue. Put a common version with stats that make the Pre-Owned Environmental Suit look down on it in everyone's replicator to outfit their away teams with. And I'd push for it. But again, people with more money than good sense who already bought it for strictly RP reasons, might cry foul.
As for other items that should be account-bound: STF requisitions, mostly. I wouldn't even ask for most other uncrated Z-store purchases to be account bound. Since most other single-purchase Z-store purchases aren't priced so obscenely.
What benefit would an account-wide unlock give Cryptic? It means at most you would ever buy one of these items per account, a significant revenue loss for them. Actually, at $7 that also makes this the most expensive costume unlock on the C-store, so are you actually saying you support a price increase for all C-store costumes / items?
The advantage of per character unlocks is the exchange. You actually don't have to spend any money at all. I was able to pick these off the exchange at 7M EC's this weekend, a great deal for this honestly. I value my real world cash a lot more than EC's, and I'm not limited in how much I can make like I am with dilithium.

No.
Because it is NOT a costume.
It is Combat Equipment.

According to the C-store, it comes up under "Appearances>Federation Uniforms" so someone at Cryptic disagrees with you.
That's because it IS a uniform.
The only person disagreeing with me is you.
It is a uniform/costume which grants you stat buffs.
THAT is what is known to MMO players as Combat Equipment, and not JUST a mere costume.

It means exactly that.
I would buy one!
One for Fed one for KDF, that's already 1400 Zen, almost a month worth of Subscription time if you want to see it like that.
This way, i will buy none.
But appereantly selling EC on the C-Store through Tradable Items (*cough* Lockbox Keys *cough*) is more profitable.
7 Million EC for one suit is still 77 Million for 11 Chars, i would even have that. But i am not willing to part with it for such a lousy item.
For 77 Million EC i expect a LockBox Ship, not an Armor Item that is useful for ONE lousy map.

Technically, it's several maps accessed through varying levels of doorways that are initially accessed from the same master door in Sector Space, but . . . ya. That's pretty much how I see it, too, ZB.

700Z would be a fair price for the suit if it were an account unlock that could be reclaimed indefinitely. As it is, no, not a good deal. In fact, it's an extremely bad deal. I'll stick with the ugly suit that I didn't pay a dime for.
I just recently talked about this item with my other show hosts. We all agreed that the price felt too high for the single character-applicable suit armor. James suggested it should be priced perhaps around 3-400 instead, that way the subscription stipend could cover it at the least. And we all preferred there to be purchase options such as: 1. account-wide 2."bulk" 3. and/or single suit, reduced price. At 700z, I felt that the suit's stats weren't awesome enough, in comparison to other armor I have or see, to get my interest - even though the visual design is. Seems like overall, most here feel the same way about the suits. It's true that one doesn't have to buy it, as it's mostly an aesthetic thing (similarly to a pet), but since a number of people seem to want to buy it, and won't or can't for the price, then perhaps it's enough to stir up a price change. We'll see.

I don't think the price is going to change. Doing so would create a situation where people who already bought it would be outraged. The more likely outcome is to see the item discontinues entirely, creating "last chance" opportunity.
A price drop might come in the distant future, but the last thing Cryptic wants to do is create a sense that it's better to wait for a price drop than buy it now.

That's a good point regarding avoiding badly timed price drops.
Instead of dropping the single-suit-character price right now and upsetting people who already bought it (a sale makes sense later), adding in one of the other purchase options we talked about - like "bulk" or "account-wide" would still help. At worst, it would annoy recent purchasers, but perhaps overall, please most - especially if this flexible purchase model was reliable from this point forward. I might still buy a bulk or account-wide deal in addition to a previous single-suit-character purchase. I would be less likely to buy the suit for multiple characters at the current price.
I'd prefer the option to be able to chose between a "per character deal" or a "deal for multiple characters" every time something like this went on the market. (note: I only have three characters right now, but I know exactly what people with 10 or more are going through)
Going back to the singe suit - I still think they should up the stats of the EV suit for the folks who already bought it and to encourage people to buy it at the current price.

This entire posts begs the question, what do you think happens when they have a 20% off sale about every other month then?
You see, when THAT happens, some people complain that they bought it at a higher price, and others (sometimes, even those same people) believe, based on this, that they should wait for a sale or price drop before they purchase something.
Therefore, your entire argument here is pretty much nullified.
It already happens anyway.
So a price drop would NOT cause any additional problems.
Also, didn't anyone see my idea about a PURELY Costume version at a cheaper price, with no effects other than you not dying when you need an EV Suit?
Yeesh!

700 Zen per character unlock and their usefulness in game is too much for me to find it worth the price. At last night's DE prices, that would equate to roughly 150,000 dilithium per suit. Now, 700 Zen for an account wide unlock and unlimited re-claim? I'd probably splurge then.
It is really sad seeing all the great work done by the talented developers being overshadowed by corporate greed.

I hate it when people say this. It's a generalization.
The dilithium economy is deliberately set up so that everybody can not get what they want for free.
Some people can take advantage of this, on a first-come, first-served basis to collect whatever Zen is available for sale, with diminishing returns.
But the suits do not make it to the Exchange without somebody buying them from the C-Store, either with Zen or with Zen-for-Dilithium. There is not an unlimited supply available. Again, it's first-come, first-served.
And why on earth are people overpaying real money to buy a suit just so they can put it on the Exchange in return for "fake" money? Boggles my mind.
It's not easy to make millions of EC, either, unless you're doing it by putting master keys and such on the Exchange... and then you've spent real money at it. Some people can play the Exchange and make lots of EC's, but not everybody can.
It all comes back to the fact that the EV suits are NOT worth what Cryptic is charging for them, in the eyes of most of the customers who might be interested in buying one. If Cryptic (and anyone else with a slice of the profits) wants to sacrifice volume sales and keep putting out vanity items for the big spenders, that's their business. Maybe it's more profitable that way and maybe it isn't.
But not with MY money.

...not to mention that those suits work only for 3 Maps, and there isn't even any Zero-G Combat in-game.
Nope, wouldn't cost any Zen for the Player... and can't have it that previous endgame items are any good for the next tiny piece of endgame.
...BAH!

Yeesh!
I'm totally trolling on your emotional "Yeesh". JK!
But seriously, I think you have a great idea regarding offering a standard "base protection (dying prevention)" costume version of the suit at a cheaper price. Cuz I like the way the suit looks. A lot.
