Nice to see that the massive criticism about the "Combat EV suits" hasn't slowed the higher ups from publicising the existence of the canon EV suit in STO.
Now that Cryptic has time gated AND added cooldown to Nukara, they themselves are basically saying that these EV suits are a waste of money - provided that you're in a fleet and expected to contribute to fleet projects.

It's not the suits that are being criticized... It's the ridiculous 700 Zen Per Suit, Per Character that is being justifiably criticized! The suits themselves look awesome!
is this really the thread to air all your grievances?
If not here, then where?
Anyone looking at the Friday screenshots, will have already seen it, and thus it doesn't matter what comments are said here. But the powers that be should/could see our grievances. Just because you DON'T have an issue with the EV suits (and it's pricing/availability), doesn't mean that others opinions doesn't count.
I'd buy the suit even at its price because of nice it looks except for the fact that if i wanted all 12 of my KDF characters to have it that is 700 zen * 12 = 8400 Zen. So lets see if I were to actually pay for that... $105 dollars so yeah I am not even going to bother with it unless I see them in exchange for a super low amount.
Are you kidding me put a picture in the gallery after nearly every comment on the subject was Condemning the whole fiasco....time to issue some drug tests, because you folks must be out of your mind.
In the "complaint thread" about the EV suit, i'm pretty sure most complaints were unanimous: The Art Team did a phenomenal job on the canon Starfleet EV suit, and the Klingon suit looks rather appropriate for the species. Due to limitations in Cryptic's tech (i.e, bad engine coding), we can't have transparent helmets. Which is not a limitation in itself, since other games handle it just fine. Oddly, CO which uses the same engine, can handle helmets of all types, and on heads of all shapes and sizes, just fine.
The complaint, is in regards to the logistics surrounding the sale of the EV suits:
- Character Specific (Not account wide)
- High cost (700 Zen for a 1-time use, vs Costume Packs of 550 Zen per account)
- No ingame acquisition method (random chance, purchasable for EC/Dilithium)

Agreed, beautifully done and the Fed true to the FC -Voyager suit, I honestly mean that. Would love to have them, but not at this time if ever. I wondered why the other suits looked so bad when my away teams had these, now I see.
I know you have to generate income and have no problem with that, but this is disappointing. It has been planned to milk money off everyone with these suits since the beginning. Though the price is way too high for them, I am not as disappointed by that as by the low quality that they are AND the price. It's the principle of the thing.
I had hoped things were getting better with the setup of the new lock boxes, seemed like you guys were starting to listen to the players, then this.
Anyone getting these the way they are now should be ashamed of themselves for supporting a bad and dishonest practice, you are hurting yourselves in the long run.
I apologize for the bluntness of all of this, I haven't been on STO long but I have been fortunate enough to benifit from the Free to Play additions to the game. Have enjoyed STO immensely. It's just that I would have expected better from a company that represents Star Trek and has fans that work in it.

Er. The engine would support transparent helmets fine.
They have the helmet replace your head because of custom aliens with cone heads and the like.
In theory, they could make the helmet transparent for everyone except Gorn and custom aliens. They could probably have a special EV suit helmet for Gorn. But it boils down to the fact that they can't have believable looking hats or helmets on bobbleheads and coneheads.
Yes, the helmet replaces a character's head. It couldn't HAVE TO because of the engine. Cryptic chose for it to to handle unusually headshapes that would distort a helmet until it no longer looks helmet like.

And something I've said and see other people say:
A lot of us could deal with per character unlocks...
IF it had a special power and IF it came in a bundle of 5.
Buying it once per character IS pricey. Buying it once per bridge officer is insane.
But if these came in per character bundles of 5 that we could outfit an away team with, 700 ZEN would be easier to swallow.

I suppose the tech could be modified, in such a way that if your head shape is "beyond X proportions", it simply ignores the shape, and gives you an opaque face mask. Why penalize the majority of players who have relatively normal head proportions?

The issues is that it has to be one way other the other for everyone. As a guess on my part, Cryptic made the decision (presumably with input from CBS) that having transparent scalable helmets for the the exteme possible settings for Aliens was too far removed from the look and feel of Star Trek. And you can see those type of artistic decisions throuh out the character creator. The sliders of the canon races are very to what's possible with the Alien race. The canon races are basically humans in latex. So that's what they modeled.
What gets me is the total blanking of the subject by "officials" etc., at least try and save a bit of face explain why they cost so much!

I think what you propose would be tricky, actually. Really, for any of this to work, it would need to be a costume slot item.
The default would be opaque helmet.
If you choose a transparent helmet, the sliders would be restricted.
And while maybe the parts wouldn't mix and match, it would be nice to adjust the accent color on these outfits.
I know, I know, character data storage... But why ever have someone appear in an uncustomized avatar?
It's also being mentioned that PW effectively considers Cryptic to be their "R&D" lab for the Western MMO market - basically, seeing how far they can push pricing models of in-game virtual goods before the players start complaining.
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.

Well they certainly do a good job with that.
Like the screenshot as the suits are good and hats off to the designers but unless we are super lucky we will never see them in any events unless the zen price drops or they become account wide etc.
As for the guy who says he will try the exchange anyone who buys it for the exchange will charge triple if not quadruple the price since they will be a rare commodity until the zen price drops.

This lot could learn a thing or two from Bethesda
