I've been working on a science character to fly the Atrox carrier, but my main character on Fed side is a Tac, is it possible to make an effecient Tac carrier pilot?
Your career only adds some variety to your skills while flying a ship.
Most of your skills come from your Bridge Officers (and Ship if applicable) anyway.
tac on an atrox would be interesting: you'd probably have to use beam arrays since it's just so slow. you would want to have 2 FAW, 2 Attack Pattern Beta, 9 points in attack patterns, put that debuff on everything that moves.
If you want to fly a carrier as a fed tac, you would be far better off getting the Tholian Recluse carrier, with it's Commander Universal bridge officer slot.
With the Recluse, you could enjoy the all-turret build many KDF captains currently do. You would use Rapid Fire and Scatter Volley with that. And with a 360 degree field of fire, it would be devastating. And the fighters would be the icing on the cake.
Ok look. I am a tac who uses the carrier. 2 dual heavy cannons up front with 1 quantum torpedo in the front, plus 3 turrets in the back. I use tac team and cannon rapid fire plus heals and holds in eng and sci. In the fleet pve I can take a whole fleet of enemies on and not loose any health plus destroy them all. tac works very well in the atrox carrier.

I wasn't aware the Atrox could use DHC's. Are you sure you're not talking about the Armitage?
Engineer is best in a carrier even though carrier is weighted towards sci skills. Reason being is that you are slow and have the worst manuverability, you need to be able to tank a lot because you won't be doing much evading. The carrier is lacking in engineering skills compared to a cruiser so really needs the engineer captain skills to help give it more heals. You can spec your engineer with points in all the science skills so it will be just as good as a sci captain using them, you just need a sci captain to train some skills you can't train yourself.
Sci captain skills like subnuc also require you to face your target, hard to do as a carrier, but eng captain skills don't require that.
Sci captains work better in escorts and sci ships, but unfortunately carriers have negated much of the need for regular sci ships so you tend to see most sci captains in escorts only.

Atrox only has a LT tac station, no way you are getting all that, especially since its better to take at least 1 tac team on it, I would use 2 tac teams myself though. You are dead without at least 1.
Honestly ive been playing this game since the start the Atrox is a Sci ship dont listen to anyone who tells you to put cannons on the thing i have one and i am a monster in pvp and pve the set you should be using in either all turrets and a single torp on front or Beams and a single torp the reason is mainly due to the slow turn-rate so if you use on of these setups you will more than likely have all guns to bare on your target and for the tac slot use tac team 1 and 2 if you go turrets or beam overload 1 and tac team 2, use tactacl team because if will moe your shield str to the side being shot at for you and gives you a damg bonus the TRUE value to a science officer in a science ship is its bridge officer debuffs focus greatly on those because the ship cant put out the dps of a escort or tactical officer is because a science officer is ment to debuff and heal which makes it a great tank and the defuffs make up for the lack in damage its hard to say no to being destroyed by a science toon who uses gravity well 3 and has just drained all your shields
Ghostlymage, there are many builds for each ship. this is a ship where you can go either cannons or beams or turrets. And yes the this carrier can use cannons. In my opinion I would use dual heavy cannons, but the choice is up to you. We here, all of us, are just giving you advice. I find that if you build the ship correctly you do not need to be eng for the extra heals. As of posting this I have 5 heals, and 3 more BO skills that I am thinking of changing. If you have any questions about my full build go ahead and ask, I just dont feel like doing it if nobody is going to read it.

Ghostlymage, you dont have to use tac team 1 & 2 if you have some money to spend. you can pick up a few blue, (or purple if you want) tac team DOFF. that frees up the luet. spot for rapid fire if you use cannons and/or turrets.

So, ya, it works well.
