Hey, so I just started this game and I have never really played a game like this before so I was just wondering if the people who really know the game could help me and possibly others understand everything. I know this is going to sound stupid but the heck is the "patch" thing that it is talking about. I literally just downloaded it, and I was under the impression I could just start the game right away.

Thanks if anyone helps!

    Hello and welcome to STO.

I would suggest just start playing the game, and try to remember to read everything and try out things the game tell you. For all people complain about the lack of documentation, a lot of the information IS given to you during the tutorial and early stages of the game, but a lot of people miss it, or forget about it.

For example, at one point, you're told about aim mode. When that happens, be sure to try it. You don't need to use it to do your task, but it'll help you remember it later.

As for patch, for any MMO, patches are incremental program updates that the company creates and distributes to the players at semi-regular intervals. Some patches are larger than others.

If you just downloaded the game, you likely would have already downloaded the most recent patches, but don't be surprised if your game launcher downloads more a week from now, or whenever the next patch comes out.

Patches usually contain bug fixes, new features, and content. (And the cynical will also add they often include more bugs to have to be fixed later.)

"understand everything" is going to be too much to chew all at once.

Just start of doing the tutorial and take your time playing some of the Story missions.

If you want to research some information, have a read of http://www.stowiki.org
There is a good 'beginners section' there.

Plan your skills out ahead of time with http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/

Don't worry too much about gearing up your ships and officers as you first progress, as you'll get a new ship and equipment tier every day or two.

You get new ships at levels 10, 20, 30, and 40. 40 is the last free ship you get (others cost money), so be certain. http://spidermitch1.com/sto/fed/SpidermitchFEDShipChart.jpg and http://spidermitch1.com/sto/kdf/SpidermitchKDFShipChart.jpg are worth getting to know.

For your builds, look around the forums a lot. Even if you don't copy others' builds exactly, look at which combinations get used over and over and over again. There's probably a reason for it.

And don't be afraid to ask questions, especially on group missions. Most people would much rather work with a newbie who wants to learn than even the most skilled know-it-all who ignores team chat.

    Make it so.

stay away from the forums and learn to play. What you hear here is TRIBBLE. Seriously.

No one here can help you, they will only tell you what works for them (and if you think they are cool, look up their posts and see how lame they are.)

Play how you want, it works really..

The patch is recently released new content :)

Which causes quite a few pieces of "old" content to cease functioning properly.

some of us are actually trying to help people here and be honest about it..

As to the OP, take advise on the forums with a grain of salt, but when alot of the people are saying the same thing, maybe you should listen to them.

This is not like other Single Player RPGs out there. There is a story that you can play through, but the game is constantly being changed, new content, new UI stuff, or even changing how powers work or look. You can see what is the latest release notes are here http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=118

As Tangolight said, just like in any other game, follow the tutorial. Take it one step at a time. After you go through the tutorial, try finding a good fleet, or group of players that you team up and fight with. A good fleet will help you out giver you pointers and even assist you in missions.

You can join a fleet by asking for one in zone chat in a busy area (Earth Space Dock or DS9). You can look for fleet ads in Zone chat as well. Or you can right click someone in a fleet and directly ask them about their fleet. My Fleet is called Fleet Operations, and I can say that we are one of the most helpful and friendly fleet out there. Keep an Eye in the sky for us. We'll be out there, waiting ;)

If you are interested, Hit up the in game mail (Mail icon on your minimap) And sent me an Game mail to "@kyeto13" without quotes.

You're just upset because people try to explain things to you and you don;t understand or don;t want to understand.

Just to clarify, new installs are still getting huge patches when first launched. We had a couple threads within the last few days.

Like maina says, good advice would be too stay away from the forums and what you hear here is mostly TRIBBLE. Especially don't listen to posters with 1,600 posts when this board hasn't even been here 2 months yet. It's not quantity, its quality.

Can we PLEASE get some actual moderation on these forums? Thanks

You may also want to change your sig. Discussing moderation is against forum rules.

Could we stick to helpful advice to the new person please? :)

My advice is to enjoy the ride :)
Don't get too hung up on wanting to progress too fast.

Read everything you are presented on the screen. In missions, don't just click the green one :)
