They need to be fixed. Simple as that.
Most (and by most I mean a lot) of people run Sets because they are useful (Borg Especially). There is a reason why Shields, Engines and Deflectors do not sell on the Exchange and are better off being vendor trash. Even Mk XII Purple versions sell for Vendor sell prices. Its' absurd.
They should do something like WoW where you can "deconstruct" color quality items into basic builder parts. Without spending a ton of money in the exchange, it's going to take me forever to learn crafting skill up to something useful, as I have to farm all the little components.

Don't bother, even at max level it's not worth anything.
Crafting took me 2 days, I bought almost all of the Matts to get to 1650.
Anyways, the major issue I have is the Engine. Only the Borg Engine allows for Warp 10+ Speeds w/out slipstream afaik. That's why I use it.
Well just thinking long term... might not be worth it now, but you never know in future seasons.. also maybe because I just started playing (last Friday), I still have that new car smell and think anything is possible.

So..... either nerf the sets directly or nerf them indirectly by making non-set pieces valuable enough to matter?
What solution would you suggest that wouldn't just make for worse problems?

Just in case it escaped you, you can make schematics from 0 all the way to 1650 if you want to. Or whatever the cheapest item might be at the time. Nothing ever "greys out" and stops giving you points in the general research skill.

I didn't know that, thanks! My problem are the alien artifacts and the like, keep running out....
I crafted and i bought some of the resources on the exchange and i keep on running the crafting sample doff missions. I believe that something needs to be done with all of the normal mark 10 and above items for engines and shields and deflectors because when people get up to the level where they would use mark 10 or higher gear they use sets like the borg, jem hadar, maco, aegis or others. Like i just recycle and sell any mark 10 shields, engine or defloctors that i get while playing because i like everyone else uses a set. and if i want to go above warp 10 in sector space i use the maco or borg engine.
Not sure why everyone thinks the Borg set is so great, personally I believe the MACO XII set is the best by far. Been a while since I check the numbers (I have one Ody with MACO and one with Borg sets), and if memory serves me correctly, the MACO set easily outclasses the Borg build. The only drawback is the extreme rarity of the Prototype Borg Engine needed to get the last piece of the MACO set.
And the poster that said that only the Borg engines go above warp 10 without going slipstream... is mistaken. Both MACO engines use asymetric warp fields that go above warp 10.
Borg set looks the coolest, but the MACO set is statistically the best of the Borg/MACO/OMEGA sets.
D&D DM/Player since 1982 - all versions except the despised 4e

Well the MACO deflector is absolutely the stronger of the two, the engines are a toss-up. What people use the Borg stuff for is the set bonuses, which outclass everything else in the game (trust me, I've tried all the combos you can imagine). The shield heal is a free RSP and the hull heal not only puts BOff heals to shame but can quite literally bring you from near zero to 100 in a matter of seconds.
Personally I think all of the utility kits should have set bonuses that change depending on their stats, forcing you to mix and match (so a covariant shield might boost shield emitters for a positron deflector, or a graviton deflector combined with a hyper-impulse engine might provide a cooldown buff to kinetic science abilities). You'd still get the more exotic set bonuses from special sets, but normal equipment would be just as competitive and easier to tailor to suit any given ship setup.

That's actually an amazingly cool idea! It would add a whole other layer of ship customization without (presumably) too much work from the Devs.

That way they can still be far more common and yet desirable as a resource.
