I admit, I'm not a huge Star Trek knowitall. I very much enjoy the show though and so when I heard about an MMO, I was excited. However, after looking at reviews it seems this game isn't what I thought it would be. This game has received terrible to mediocre reviews (although I heard it has improved vastly since it was released) but I'm still quite interested. Now, I want an honest opinion here. Should I bother with the game? Can people who actually know about the game tell me about the best bits and the bits that make you groan? Thanks.
EDIT: Can a moderator change my name please? For some reason it has come out as tgooblyhisis when it was meant to be thisisgoobly. That's just...bad.
I've been here sense launch. I'm a big Trek fan...but once the game went f2p, I dropped the sub and enjoyed the game far more knowing i wasn't paying for it.
Enjoy it for what it is and if spending a bit of money to get things you want works for you than do it. Otherwise, just play it for free and when it gets old play something else. You can always come back.

Really? You are asking for the opinion on the forum of the video game if it is worth playing. Don't you think the bias answer is the result. there are people who literally Blew hundred to thousands of dollars and hours on this game.
You already signed up for a pwe account and the price of admission is free. addiction is costly. There are very good trek story in here. Play it for that reason.
If you are afraid of getting sucked into an mmo and find yourself buying all the ship in the z-store shunning all your loved one and plunging yourself into financial mmo ruin and and screaming "CRYPTIC" at the top of your lungs every time there is maintenance/patch notes then......
RUN WAY! SAVE YOUR SELF BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE> DON"T LOOK BACK IT GOING TO DEVOURER YOUR SENSE OF SELF DIGNITY.

I was asking what parts of the game are fantastic and what parts are just downright awful. Your sarcastic reply wasn't necessary.

To be fair nearly all of these reviews are 12-18months old. The game has changed considerably during this time. Some will hate it, others will love it. You might as well give it a go now that it's is free and make up your own mind

there is a lot of great trek story content... even some that explain long-time mysteries, plot holes and other various awesomeness. I do suggest reading the "Countdown" comic books though. it bridges the gap between the last TNG movie and this game.... sort of... there's lots of TRIBBLE here sure... especially since PWE bought cryptic. but I've been playing since the beta and never looked back... now my son and my friends and his friends are all playing it... so it can't be that bad. besides, reviews are ALWAYS bias and should NEVER be used to formulate a decision.
There is a lack of story content for those of us that have played for months, but what we do have is decent enough. There is none of the defeat 5 wolves because the contact is too lazy mission except for patrols and exploration missions.

This is true, from the point of view of a brand new player. I've probably leveled to many Ensigns to VA to quickly. Like I said. Play it for free.:)
Don't mind the reviews very much, especially on an MMO like STO. At the time, their reviews were somewhat warranted (although not fully playing through the game biased them...).
But the's game changed a lot since then, so their reviews are moot now.
And besides, reviews are only meant to be a suggestion. They're not the end-all argument on if something's good or not. Trying is the only way to truly tell that.
Was named Trek17.
Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.
Because it is a F2P and you can log whenever you want, it's worth it. But I'm not sure if I would pay subs for it again, most likely not.
"Cryptic Studio’s Jack Emmert (2010): Microtransactions are the biggest bunch of nonsense. I like paying one fee and not worrying about it – like my cellphone. The world’s biggest MMO isn’t item based, even though the black market item GDP is bigger than Russia … microtransactions make me want to die.”
The only review that ultimately matters is YOURS. For example, most movies I like are given bad review by the movie critics. STO is free to play. Try it out and the only cost is some disk space and your time.
I love Star Trek and I'm also very much a Treknologist. But I like STO for what it is. It's a Star Trek MMORPG. Sure is has bugs and certain business decisions I don't agree with, but I still send a bulk of my play time in STO. An MMORPG isn't going to be a totally faithful representation of Star Trek. As the devs have put it sometime canon has to bend to the game being fun. But the game does have some very Star Trek moments, but I won't spoil the surprises.
But if you'll consider my recommendtion, if you like Star Trek and like game, you'll like Star Trek Online.
I found STO to be far more playable without investing money in it than any of the other F2P MMOs. It has its flaws, but it's worth trying out if you like Star Trek.
Seeing as how its free, its definitely "worth" trying. If nothing else play through all of the Fed episodes and enjoy the Foundry. None of that will cost you anything.

Where's that straightjacket....
As noted above, try it for a month. For some it;s the greatest thing. For others, a mixture of poor customer service, poor ethics, thousands of outstanding bugs, a lack of plot (the record is something like 17 hours to play the entire story line straight through), too quick to max out advancement, etc is what they see.

i have never been a gamer, but always a Star Trek fan. i really enjoy the game a lot. the more i play the better it gets. just my opinion.
again, just my opinion, but a lot of complaining on the forum. it is free to play till you want something good, so check it out. starts slow and builds from there.

ps. don't plan for a forum name change.
Alright, I'll give it a go.
Fantastic = Space combat, Duty officer system, Teaming with friends for missions.
Awful = Lock Boxes, Time-gated content, lack of story content.
Also, the fact that everything new that comes out is usually put right into the c-store. However, you CAN grind away for it. If you invest the time.
