So I just hit level 50, and I'm still running with the quad phasers I acquired when I bought the tactical escort refit. Are they worth keeping for end-game? If so, I'll probably equip the rest of my energy weapons with phaser energy type and get two phaser relay tac consoles. But before I spend the bank on that, I'm wondering if that is a wise decision, or if I should ditch the phaser and go with a more exotic energy type. As a more "casual" player (I don't do PvP), I'm not necessarily looking for the absolute best, just something that is a good balance between effectiveness and cost efficiency. For example, I know antiproton is favored by many for end-game, but for just starting on lvl 50, I can't afford to outfit just yet with 100% antiproton. If the quad phasers don't hold up to mk XI or XII gear, perhaps tetryon? Tetryon gear doesn't appear to be horrifically expensive, and extra shield dmg is always nice.
They grow with you in level, if that's a concern. Unfortunately, they are not really good. Their performance is similar to Dual Cannons, which are (due to the way energy drain works) already a bit worse than Dual Heavy Cannons. On top of that, they have effectively 4 [DMG] Mods. That may be more Mods than any other weapon has, but [DMG] is widely considered the weakest. [ACC], [CritH] and [CritD] are better. And they drain 10 engine power.
If you like the visuals, they're okay and if you're flying an Escort in PvE, you don't really need the marginal differences. But if you're looking for the best type of weapons to equip, the Quad Cannons do not appear on the list.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Quads are good enough to help you grind those weapons in STFs and/or via crafting.
So unless you want them instantly, you may be better off grinding a bit first (STFs are quite fun for a while).
I also have the defiant re-fit with the phaser quad-cannons and I love them. I used to run the ship with anti-proton but once started getting mark XI and mark XII phaser cannons and turrets with the extra bonus of hurting Borg more I came to love them even more. As I'm sure you know with all phaser type you get the chance to disable a certain sub-system on enemy ships so I find that to be another good reason to use all phaser BUT I have experienced this the chances for this happening against Borg ships is very little.
Anyways I rock STFs pretty well on Elite using all phaser with my quads and not only are they useful but they are fun!
Q: [quoting Hartley] "Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays..."
Quad cannons also proc more often than the DHCs (it's on a per-shot basis so the higher rate of fire matters), so one has to take that into account in comparing them. Also, the latest update on Tribble has supposedly buffed them by an (unspecified) amount--can we get any numbers on that change?
you guys might check the latest tribble news. They increased DPS of the Quad cannon. I dont know if it now makes sense to keep it but i am testing a build on tribble right now
for stf's i run 1 quad cannon, 1 dual cannon and 1 dual heavy cannon with a quantum, all those with rapid fire III and torp high yield III = huge ammounts of damage,
I thought the OP was asking about Phasers and Antiprotons... he said the Antiprotons are too expensive, and asked what would be a good runner up instead of Antiprotons.

I find quad cannons really good on my escorts. The engine drain i find a little helpfull from running low power on that subsystem already on attack runs extending them half a second longer or something close for an extra shot. I believe its a little too bad you cant slot 2 or more. But overall i my self like them even at endgame.
what the hell is up with the crappy "f" at the end of my name was never there on either website till the crappy change

Actually procs are per firing cycle not per shot. So DCs and DHCs have equal chance of proc with turrets I think having the shortest firing cycle, making them the most likely to proc.
There's a Dev post somewhere in the PvP forums, but with the Forum migration, good luck finding it

He said he can't afford 100% antiprotons, and if the quad phasers aren't good enough until he can, perhaps tetryon?
I believe Capt. Gecko (Dev) said these would be getting a buff in the future and they would be the best canon cannons in the game. I would absolutely hold on to them.

And on top of that +10 to severity and no idiotic engine power drain.
Its a gimmick, a toy, nothing more. Im sure its awesome against NPC's so RP'ers just keep usin them kkthxchnk
