How could target selection be imrpoved?

As a carrier captain, I often encounter people who complain about "Spam". While I truly love commanding carrier pets around, I totally see what their problem is: Selecting the desired target.

And to be honest, even without PvP and carriers on the opposite side, I find selecting the desired target often quite tiresome, even in some PvE evironments.

So, here are a few ideas how these problems could be solved:
  • Analogous to the team list, add a HUD element that displays the 4 biggest (highest tier) enemy contacts in a 10 km sphere around your ship. You could then just click on those symbols instead of selecting them from the gameplay window directly.
  • Add a key that allows to select "next biggest" (highest tier) enemy ship in a 10 km sphere around the ship, much like Tab right now selects just the next enemy ship. This would usually cycle between the two "biggest" enemy ships in the vicinity. Ties could be broken by distance.
  • For Autofire, add a "hold your fire" button that as long as it is pressed, stops weapons from firing.

Feel free to add alternatives. ^^
Remember, STO is nothing but a cosmetics game, where only the rule of cool matters. The game mechanics are intentionally out of balance, don't try to "optimize" anything, as it would just frustrate you.

Almost all other MMO's use the same, functional targeting system to avoid this issue. STO does not for some odd reason.

You have TWO targeting systems. One is for 'view' the other is for 'lock'. When you click on a target its information is shown somewhere on the screen. If you press a button to 'lock' weapons on the target then your ship's weapons will fire at it anytime it can.

Now, once you have a target locked you can click ANY other ship and a second target info screen pops up... but your ship will not shoot at it. 'Viewing' a different target ship without 'locking' it allows you to order your pets to attack it while your own ship's weapons focus on the locked target.

How would that help with filtering "spam"?
I agree - while an interesting concept, it doesn't really help with spam. It helps inspecting other enemies. Maybe it can be of a bit advantage since selecting the wrong at least still keeps your old target.

What I think would be neat if pet groups were only a single targetable objects. That means a Carrier has at best 4 targetable objects out, not 12. It's still a lot, but it's still better.

It would probably require a lot of changes in the background of the game. The pets would need to stick together and possibly be a single entity instead of 1-3 (4?).

    Already in game..

    Esc key

    click options

    go to Controls tab

at bottom look for "Auto Attack"

    Set to "toggle, change cancels"

Done.. Auto fire stops when new target is selected either by tab button or by click or even by deselecting target by clicking empty space (make sure to have "Click Unselects Target" set to "ON").

Now, imagine you have 15 possible targets on screen. How do you easily select the one you had before? For example, Jam Sensors, hold fire, wait, wait, fire again on the same target after Jam Sensors is almost over?

If you have your camera set to "Follow Target".. you can quickly click empty space above the target to stop the autofire, then quickly click the target again before the 3 seconds pass (time it takes to where your camera pans back to ship neutral) and you will be ready to start firing again with the space bar.

I use this method all the time in STFs.. come in handy with KASE after 1 gate pops and you have 4 to 6 probes in the middle of 2 spheres and you need to concentrate fire on a single target so as not to pull agro from the spheres with AOE attacks.

Also works great for Infected Space Elite when taking out generators and you have to stop DPS at 10%, but be ready to fire off when everyone else is ready and to manage agro when dealing with the swarms of Probes and Spheres after transformer goes down.

Also CSE when swapping targets between BOPs, Raptors, Neg'vars and Probes.. great way to manage aggro.

Though I have to admit, I alternate steering of my ship between keyboard and mouse to accomplish this.. In order to keep the Camera lock, I steer with keyboard.. when just doing strafing runs and fast maneuvering, I use mouse.. take practice, but highly efficient when you get it down.

"Empty space" is a problem with today's full screens because of all those carriers' fighters. Hence this thread. ;)

Honestly, I've never had the isse of accidentally selecting a friendly or enemy fighter unless I purposely clicked on it....

I hardly "Tab" target and usually click target.. If target is "Obstructed" I just quickly change camera angle using the mouse as I steer with keyboard and click target.. maybe a .5 to 1 sec delay in firing on the target.

Played this way since Open Beta.. never thought there was an issue, even with all the fighters present now...

I guess a LCARS miniscreen window off to the side with enemy ship types and ranges would serve your purposes?

If so, then I +1 the idea but have option in the user controls to turn it off, just to further ease of game play for other ship captains.
