So I just heard the greatest joke...

edited June 2012 in PvP Gameplay
I just played a capture and hold with my fed sci/sci, and couldn't even make it to a capture point because some guy made it his mission to destroy me. That's fine, pugs often don't stick together in capture and hold because kill count is not the objective. Whatever. But the kicker is that he said his goal was to get me to stop flying science ships because they are OP in "group play". Group pvp is the only type of pvp where a science ship is useful (the common configuration of tactical ship with the Aegis set, beam overload and rapid fire III is usually impossible for me compete with alone, unless the player simply isn't very good), and I fail to see how "being somewhat useful" translates to being OP. The OP claim gets thrown around alot, often unjustly IMO, but since sci abilities were nerfed I've NEVER been told that sci ships were OP. Usually people will just spawn kill me when I'm alone because I'm an easy target, not because the awesome power of my science ship terrifies them. I didn't find anything in the forums, so I bring it to all of you.

Is this just an issue of yet another player wanting homogeneity in the game? Anyone else feel the same way? Please illuminate me, because I don't get it.

(And please, don't just post that I shouldn't be using a science ship in pvp because they're worthless. This is not a thread about me getting munched repeatedly, this is a thread about someone claiming that they're OP, which I find bizarre.)

And so God told Moses, "It is all OP", dude. People have always said everything is over/underpowered ever since man first invented Connect-4 by drawing lines in the sand. If you think STO is bad you should try reading some of the bigger DotA boards.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away....... when sub nuc and viral matrix could disable you for 5 seconds, and they hadnt fixed it so teams could be deployed while disabled. The sci/sci was king. But I doubt you assailant was refering to this since it was last spoken of in grunts and rock banging, chances are, he didnt know how to come with a science vessel one and since he was the greatest play ever and made of win wrapped in awesome flying the U.S.S. lolpwn. You must have been op.

I used to macro this text, whenever someone cried in various games about OPness:
    Dear <insert MMO Developer> Team,

Why is it <insert own class> is underpowered, while <insert class which destroyed you> is so OP?
Please nerf <insert class skill which killed you>, damage is too damn high.
Buff <insert class skill you like spamming>, it is too weak!

Yesterweek I tried to level a char, which starts getting boring at level <insert random number>, please fix this! The leveling is too (please underline) fast/slow.
In no way you unterstand us (read: ME), the playerbase which keeps you busy (with reading such stupid things)!

    Please fix this!
    Or else ...:
( ) I start even more ranting on the forums!
    ( ) I start Quit-Threads.
( ) I start to take this personally
    ( ) I will play <other MMO> which will be THE <this MMO>-Killer

    As a final note:
( ) I had done this better, you suck!
    ( ) I want this fixed, yesternow!
( ) I don't care if you ban me (but will cry, so my mommy buys me a new account, just in case I want to play again your stupid game, which I won't, ever!)

You suck <MMO Developer>, I will quit anyway, your game is dying.

You could've fired Subnucleonic Beam at him.
and as a tac flyer, I despise this ability

Personally science captains have native weak ships with weapons of less powers (like they can't mount cannons if I am corrrect). On top of that, they have to sacrifice their weapons and/or shield powers to aux power. So no need to nerf them. They are already nerfed. Give them something to fight.

I had that problem a few weeks back, I was being chased around the queues by this total i'll just mispell and call "Lusticar" - He'd spawn in his big scary Dradnaught, comes at me bro and i'd sit at a point to convert it and blew it to pieces, we'd do this six or seven times every match and he ended up calling me a ****** and PMing me **** then ignoring before I could reply lol. I go to his fleet's forums to ask for a 1v1 to settle it and get branded a bully! I cant win >.>

I didn't actually know that tactical captains in science ships were that common... I figured there was not enough dps for most of them.

Could be. It seems that the only boff abilities that could be very devastating are PSW III and Feedback Pulse (which is apparently being affected by Tac captain abilities again?). The others that I'm aware of involve tractor effects, and can thus be overcome easily enough.

Having red disks is overpowered. All disks should be black, for balance. Obviously.

Yes, long, long ago. Maybe he didn't get the memo, and assumed the devs haven't changed anything since the game launched. Or perhaps he tried going solo against a full group that happened to include a science vessel, and decided that the U.S.S. lolpwn would have pwned them hard all by itself if it hadn't been for that science ship.

Oh, it's fine. If crying is what brings them enjoyment, then I certainly wouldn't want to diminish their enjoyment. Thus, I strive to give them more to cry about. ;)
I just haven't heard this complaint in a LONG time, and wondered if I was genuinely missing something. A crusade against science ships seems ridiculous at this point in time.

He did indeed. I did not catch his handle or fleet, just a very common character name. Damn, I could've really used that head for my trophy wall.

I'm sure you do, not really the point of the thread though. Subnucleonic Beam is inherent to the sci officer, not the ship. Since we're discussing tactics now, and you're not in a science ship, let me explain how subnucleonic beam works. It has a 90' forward targetting arc, and a 2 min CD. So, if I'm alone and trying to get to a capture point, as in the scenario described above, only a complete moron would try to ambush me from the front. The tactical captain in an escort should have superior maneuverability to my science vessel, so I will usually not be able to get her/him in this arc within time (I can try to tractor or disable them and pray they don't have the relevant cleanse, but most everyone has these). So, it's generally a waste of energy trying to get off a subnuc in this case. If the opportunity arises that's great, but a strategy can't depend on it being available. Then there's the issue of the 2 min CD... again, can't build your whole strategy on it unless you plan on dicking off for 2 mins while waiting for it to recharge. I'm not that patient. I'd rather get spawn killed.

That makes me sad. I pvp'd once with him yesterday (same name & same ship, at least), and he actually seemed cool. Although, my standards are often low. I had warm fuzzies because he knew that "Erdos" is the namesake of one of my favorite mathematicians. I need to get out more.

That's my default response when targeted. But this guy claimed he wasn't going after me specifically, he was going after all science ships. And I don't remember being against him in a previous session. He was vague about the reasons, which is why I'm here picking the brains of everyone else.

But, yeah: being targeted = Q'apla!

That reminds me of some random tactical captain (lets call him Andre T.) It would seem having the RMC offended him in a PVP match. He proceeded to command his minions upon my holy grail. After said match, we proceeded to have a 1v1.

His p2w +1 ship was reduced to rubble. The NOOB basked in the glory of superior escort skills. pew pew
