On the old forums I was Tyr-El, but had to change names because I can't use a hyphen in my name, and TyrEl is too short. But that's not the point of this post. The point is this:
I've been playing STO since shortly after season 1 launched. I'm not an MMOer, but I am a Trekkie. So, I've strictly played the game solo. I've also stuck to cruisers, because the Sovereign class is my fave ship, and it's a cruiser.
As the seasons moved on, my Tactical officer kind of fell by the wayside as crafting changed, and Diplomacy was added, and other new features. Last year when they did the FE rerun, I started a new Science captain. He's my crafter, he's my Duty Officer collector, all the new things have gone to him. While he's stuck mostly to Science ships, he's currently in an Oddy (as I said, I like cruisers).
Then last week they launched the Heavy Escort Carrier. I've been curious what a carrier is like, so I picked one up - and gave it to the original Tac character that's been collecting dust. I spent pretty much all the EC he had on the Exchange to go from Mark X rainbow beams to Mark XI DHCs and turrets.
Flying an Escort after sticking with cruisers for so long was like playing a completely different game. Wow, this is fun!
I looked at the some escort builds, and lots of them used the Borg STF gear. Problem is, as I mentioned, I'm not an MMOer. I've never done raids. Maybe now's the time to try?
So I queue up The Cure (Space). Lost out on the optional pretty much immediately, but that was fun! And at the end I got some sort of engine tech. So I check things out, and hey, I can trade this in for MACO Engines. Cool. Coolcoolcool.
I run Infected and KA, get some EDC and before long trade it in for my first Borg item, the Deflector array. So after, like, two hours I've gotten some Borg gear. Not bad, I could stand to run a few more, but it's late, and that'll have to wait until tomorrow.
So tomorrow (yesterday, as of this post) comes, and I run several more space STFs, getting the Borg engines. Now I've got 3/4 of the Borg set. Why didn't I do this earlier? I also manage to get the deflector tech to grab the MACO deflector. As the day draws to an end, I notice I have 6 Borg Salvage. A quick check with Roxy tells me that I can trade that in to get some purple weapons (in this case two DHCs and a photon launcher). Sweet.
I'm having tons of fun doing content I've never done before, and all it took was a new ship with a different build. So here's to the Armitage. And having decent luck with the RNG.
Yep i'm pretty much the same, i love my cruisers too, and have finally got to Vice admiral rank (Although kept my Toon with Captain over his head with corresponding rank pins, i just like being a Captain) and i've just begun to do some STFs too, i agree they are fun. It's cool to get those good little drops afterwards, although i got a good little tip from a player called Carmenara, and she suggested to save EDC for buying ground armour and weapons e.t.c because they drop quite rarely in the missions, where as you can get the maco shields, deflector & Impulse engine from lucky more regular drops in space stfs . But saying that i did spend a few sneaky EDC on the Maco shield, because i just had to haves it . . lol, plus it gives your whole ship a neat looking skin.
Glad you're having fun, and hope to meet you out there during the raids.
I was already thinking I should save my EDC for the ground gear. I've got the Aegis Shields, and I'm happy with those. Good to hear that's the way to go for EDC spending.
Day 3 of STFing in the Armitage. Decided to pick up the Borg shields, just to try them out. Not a big fan of the regen shields. I think I'll stick to my Aegis covariants.
Managed to get 2 more salvage, so I picked up a purple turret. Otherwise nothing too exciting, beyond flying with Rainbow Brite and the Colour Kids. BFAW does look pretty when it's all different colours, I'll give them that.
I am totally referring to a rainbow FAW as a Care Bear Stare from now on.
Wasn't able to play much tonight, but I did get one run of the Cure in. Decided to be different and do it with my Sci captain in his Tac Oddy. Totally different doing it with a beam boat instead of a cannon escort.
Got the Mark X MACO Engines out of the deal. Would have preferred to get the Rare Tech for the Mark XIs, but I'll take it for the faster speed in sector space.
Dont forget to grab the BORG console from the episodes, I love the 3 piece borg with MACO shields for my escorts, you get all the worthwhile set bonus with a excellent shield.

LOL, i know right . . when ever i see that i just have to say it, reminds me of seeing my sister watching the show . . lol.
Long live the 1980's
Good News on the impuse engine, i went for the omega engine for the slightly better turn rate, so you'll have to let me know how you get on with the Maco, because i was "umming and arring" over the two for about 30 mins . . lol.

I went for the Aegis full set for my Klingon STF raider, a Hegh'ta Bird of Prey. Along with a Commander Engineer and Lt. Cdr Science boff this thing is one hell of a multi-role vessel that can tank, dogfight and riot control all at once.
In my opinion the Aegis set is the best of them all for conventional tanking, i.e., maximum structural strength and shield power plus cruiser's engineering complement... and it works very well in PvP too despite PvP forums saying otherwise, because the reactive shield adapts to whatever energy type is incoming and reduces shield damage noticeably well. An Aegis Bird of Prey is like a real life Aegis destroyer. It's kind of small and less impressive offensively than a Russian or Indian Navy antiship killer in terms of over-the-horizon strike ability, but its defensive capability gives it tremendous staying power and that can decide both the PvP match and the PUG STF.
That said I tend to do ship builds the opposite way from most others - my cruisers are quick (2pc Omega) and my escorts/BoPs are tanky. It's because I can shield and hull tank well in any cruiser automatically that I want more firepower and speed for them; it's because a tactical ship doesn't have much self-repair ability that they need to be durable.
What matters to me in teamplay is the capability to adapt to the team's requirements and the situation. Starfleet doctrine after all mandates using veteran battleship captains to cover less well equipped allies in the order of battle.
I also concur regenerative shielding doesn't work that well - even on escorts (or Klingon raiders) the more shield capacity to support and retain brute force heals, the better. Which brings me to the point - whatever downplaying of the Aegis set I've seen over the past half year doesn't really make sense to me.
The MACO set's 7.5% power recharge isn't really a boost considering 3x very rare technicians + Aux2Batt = 30% recharge speed, the Omega set's shield drain really doesn't matter if I'm going to punch big holes into them with quad DHCs on 125 power anyway, but with Thoron Distortion acting like a defensive ECM system both my science vessel and my 'angry bird of prey' can actively dodge Borg plasma beams like a Jedi Starfighter and that capability is something I swear by at all times! I mean, the best tank doesn't even get hit in the first place

I forgot to list that. I do, indeed, have the Borg console (so I get the 3 piece shield buff). My Armitage (USS Lexington) is set up like this:
Fore: 2x Phaser DHC (Borg), 1x Phaser Quad Cannon, 1x Photon Launcher (Borg)
Aft: 1x Phaser Turret (Borg), 1x Phaser Turret (non-Borg), 1x Cloaking Tractor Mines
Engines: Borg Engines
Deflector: Borg Deflector
Shields: Aegis Shields (MACO's shields are the only MACO piece I don't have)
Engineering Consoles: 1x Monotanium Alloy, Photon Defense Console, Borg Console
Science Consoles: Phaser Point Defense Console, 1x Shield Emitter Amplifier
Tactical Consoles: 2x Phaser Relay, 2x Photon Detonation
Hanger: Advanced Delta Flyers
Devices: Red Matter, Subspace Field Modulator
My Tactical Odyssey (USS Concordia) is set up like this:
Fore: 1x Phaser Dual Beam Bank, 3x Phaser Beam Array
Aft: 3x Phaser Beam Array, 1x Quantum Mine Launcher
Engines: Aegis
Deflector: Aegis
Shields: Aegis
Engineering Consoles: 1x Monotanium, Phaser Point Defense, Chevron Separation, Aquarius Escort
Science Consoles: Shield Emitter Amplifier, Work Bees, Tachyon Detection Field (need to run Assimilated with this character to grab the Borg console)
Tactical Consoles: 3x Phaser Relays
Devices: Red Matter, Shield Batteries, Subspace Field Modulator, Scorpion Fighters
Decided it was time to pick up some of the Borg Sector Defense cheevos today. Somehow I managed to get the cheevo for defending a sector, without the cheevo for defeating the command ship. Next time I logged in, I just happened to get another Red Alert in the same sector, so I tried again.
Turned out I was the only one there. Fortune favours the bold, so I was curious to see just how poorly this would go for me trying to solo it. Hit the first group of Borg, and destroyed them without any issues. Awesome. Flew off towards a second group of Borg and just about had them finished off when a couple more people showed up. Finished the rest off, and got the cheevo for defeating the command ship this time.
Running two EPtS and two TT seems to be working out well for me. Hurrah for shield tanking.
So I queue for KASN, and get dumped into an STF already in progress. Both gates are still standing, but 6 probes have gone through the time vortex. Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot. Four cruisers, all members of Rainbow Brite and the Colour Kids.
I can only assume that the original fifth member bailed. Whatever, I care more about the EDC. What amused me most was the zone chat in DS9 right before I queued up for the STF was about how terrible skittle boats were. The timing was perfect.
Nevertheless, I got my 3 EDC for the night. By my estimates, I should have my ground set in about a month, assuming I only do the three space STFs once each, every night.

If you can spare the Duty Officer spots, having two blue quality Conn Officers can reduce your TT recharge time to only 16 seconds, which is just one second off from the 15 seconds global CD from a duplicate TT1.
You also get side benefits from using the doffs - a buff to attack patterns (which is nice if your boat has room for the always-useful Attack Pattern Beta.)
Otherwise, it will free up an ensign slot for another offensive power.

I will have to check that out. Right now I've three Projectile Weapon doffs, a shield distro doff, and a flight deck doff. I honestly don't recall what I've got for Conn doffs...

I'm also a big cruiserfan ... still flying my old lady with me engineer (reached 1K successful STFs last month on him).
So whenever escort gets boring, just try cruisertanking (can be fun, at least for me it is) or sci support (played well, this is great).
It's one of the really good changes to STO, the STF overhaul really helped to go the next step.
And the learning curve is not so steep as with PvP.

That made me LOL at work. Fortunately no one else is in yet
But today, I managed to get my hands on the Rare Shield Tech, so I've managed to complete my MACO Space Set. w00t.
Now to grind 120 EDC so I can pick up the ground set. I'm at 20
