So I'm thinking about buying one of the 2GB DDR5 they have on new egg... anyone have one? Is it even compatable with STO? I currently have a 1 GB DDR2 I am happy with it's performance so far, but that extra gig of DDR5 sounds good. Any thoughts, suggestions, comments?

This is my current specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 3.68 GHz
RAM: 24 GB DDR3
Graphic Card: 1GB DDR2 NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT
Hard Drive: 4 TB

If it's DDR1,2,3,4 or 5 has nothing to do with STO, it's upto what your hardware (more specifically your motherboard) supports.

edit: scratch the motherboard comment, didn't really see that the OP was talking about a new graphics card.

Naming a card by it's ram doesn't tell us anything about the card unfortunately, at least 5 different cards of varying power and price/performance have 2 GB RAM. The type of RAM doesn't have anything to do with compatibility with the game either, that's down to the hardware (nVidia or ATI work better for different games, STO suits nVidia better atm due to dynamic lighting bug that causes crashes on ATI cards)

Also, the amount RAM on the card (as long as it's 1 GB+) doesn't really matter unless you are using multi monitor/extrememly high AA/large res (like 2560x1600). What matters is the power of the card, and what you are currently using is bottlenecking your CPU given that it is at least a quad core OCed to 3.68 (this means that your CPU's power is largely going to waste)

What's your budget, it's hard to recommend a suitable card w/o a price limit. And could you list what exactly your CPU is as well plus the wattage of the power supply you are using. (PSU is important because you may have to upgrade that as well if it has a low W)

(and finally the obligatory comment on how 24 GB RAM is overkill)

896 Mb menory on card is enough for gaming.
more ram is only for multiple desplays.

Enignite, to answer your question I do have 2 dual monitors the Resolution 1818X1022 basically 2 42" HDTV's (Toshiba). My Power Supply is 500 Watts but On Thursday I'll be upgrading to 850 Watt it's on sale on amazon. The Graphic Cards I was looking at are listed below. All are vary affordable $300 the only problem are the brands never heard of them but they are NVidea. My real question is would it even make a difference using it with a game like this? My price range is $1000 and the 2GB of DDRR5 seem good. The exact CPU I have is this...

And your right I did overclock it, I didn't want to do it too much because I know I'd have to start messing with voltages and I'm not an electrician, so it wasn't going to work for me. Oh ya about the 24 GB of memory, I also use this computer for recording (ProTools) I know I don't need that much but it was on sale and I figured just $100 more, might as well max it out.

    Thanks...

Brands don't matter that much tbh, main difference is the customer service/warrenty on them (some are lifetime, some are 3 years etc), the price and that some manufacturers might make high quality versions/special coolers. I'm more of an ATI person myself but I havn't heard anything bad about palit/zotac.

460 GTX is a very good card price/perf wise and will easily be able to hand STO. However I don't think the 2 GB ver is worth it at typical resolutions (takes 30"+ monitors to see the difference or stupid amounts of AA and even then some sources don't have a large difference) especially as they are in the $300 range.

That and the 560 GTX is being released very soon so you may want to wait a bit, might end up in another price range or cause price drops on the 460.

Alternatively you could up the card to a 570 or 6970 ($370 on newegg) or a 6950 ($300). The 6900 series have more RAM (2 GB vs 570 1.2 GB) and protools doesn't seem to mind which type of card you use (can't find anything about it using CUDA) but you won't be able to use dynamic lighting in STO (though I only ever cared about this in that one featured episode, but the game worked long enough with it on for me to finish).

I would personally go for a 6900 series as they are in your price range, still have 2 GB RAM but are more powerfull than the 460.
