I am now worrie for a bunch of aliens attacking our planet assuming we launched anti-matter weapons against them!

Okay, not really. It is certainly fascinating to think aboutt his, but I don't think there are that much practical applications coming from that, expec the usual stuff like "let's harness thunderstorms for power". It's more an additional facet.

I don't think the creation of Positrons is a particularly critical thing in the creation of anti-matter. I think when creating atoms of anti-matter, the creation of antiprotons and antineutrons is the harder part.

Considering how much raw power is in a lightning bolt, it's not surprising that Anti-Matter is an end result. Just glad it's in REALLY small amounts :)

What can we make of this?

A really, really, really cool bomb.

So the same scientists who said that miniature black holes were forming due to cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere were surprised by this?

    Waaait whaaat...

I'm surprised they didn't discover the presence of antimatter in thunderstorms sooner. I think they should really be doing more research on anti-matter.

If lighting hits the Large Hadron Collider, it's all over...

But if the Lightning hits the Collider at 88 miles per hour... imagine the possibilities!

Heh, I guess they shot that theory down. Back when they were talking about looking for black holes in that collider, one of the justifications to try it was that the energies in the collider would be less than the energy that's already in the upper atmosphere due to cosmic rays. But... they didn't find any black holes and the theory failed, so that means there probably aren't any in the atmosphere either, I guess.

Anti-matter is fun stuff. One of my astronomy professors back in the day told us about a test devised for when we finally meet aliens -- this test is supposed to determine if they're made of anti-matter. Most things translate exactly with protons and electrons just switching places, but there are some things that don't switch smoothly.

-imagines an alien ship trying to land on Earth and exploding because the ship is made of antimatter-
Hmmm that wouldn't go over too well.

Okay, so if we really have discovered Anti-matter, that means that by 2050, we could all find ourselves the crew of the REAL NX-01

Fear, apprehension and panic. Obviously the White House should immediately condemn the actions of the thunderstorms, and accuse them of possessing weapons of mass destruction and declare a war on them.

The antimatter containment field isn't created yet.

So now that we know anitmatter exists inside thunderstorms and whatnot, is this going to be the new "gamma radiation"? Instead of hapless scientist getting zotted by gamma radiation and turning into the Hulk, will we get hapless Jack@ss wannabes getting hit by lightning and gaining super powers? xD

Nah, the current president would just go to the thunderstorm apologize to it, bow and kiss its forked...finger(?) and bash America.

    Also:

Apparently antimatter containment fields require eight pairs of TRIBBLE. lol

God i hope not, that would be even more TRIBBLE on the gamma radiation thing.

Not even sure they could come to our solar system, the particles in the solar wind would do much the same thing.

Okay, so we have the antimatter, we have the containment system, what else do we need?

    List of Starship needs:

    Antimatter fuel: check
    Containment system: check
    Injector system: Check
A drunk Scottsman who can run it: Not check
    Phasers: not check
Torpedos: If Nukes count, than check
    Sheilds: Check
Armor and Hull plates: Not check
A pointy-eared genius who could humble Einstein: Not check
A smart-TRIBBLE$ed Iowan man who romances the ladies on every planet: not check
Soviet who thinks everything was made in Russia: Not check
Asian guy who is bad@$$ with a sword: Not check

    Am I missing anything here?

    Hi all.

Well, regardless of anything else, it is antimatter, and; this is what helps propel spaceships!!!

In time this discovery will lead to doing this, just like I definitely believe that eventually speed of light will be reached. Whatever man thinks about man will be able to do.

I also believe that the person has already been born that will this in the next fifty years or so.

    You heard it hear FIRST!!!!!!!

As the years go by how many think that the future of "Star Trek" might have actually been a vision of the future....well not the ligit way Star Trek was presented, but some of the aspects of it  ?

Antimatter was discovered in the 1930's and theorized before 1930's.

Hey, this could be another explanation of the mysterious disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle...

Naw, yer thinkin of magnetic ley lines that intersect to create open portals of nulified magnatism. Which in turn wreaks havoc on anything electric or magnetic at its peak inner pull.

Considering the origins of the universe...this should have been figured out long ago in regards to anti-matter. Its kinda funny really, science thought they had it figured out for so many years, now they have to play catch up to the things they never thought possible.

Some knew of this before it was widly excepted. They were laughed out of the lime light....until now.....Muahaha ha ha ha ha ha ha

We aren't talking about the discovery of it's existence, only a new place it has been discovered to exist.

I thought the general tone from some on here was wow we finally discovered antimatter. Though most come across as this is a new place to find antimatter, others have stated that we finally discovered antimatter.

That is where my comment came from why didn’t you post a reply to those who seemed shocked like antimatter is no longer science fiction?

And don't forget the theory behind the Tunguska explosion was possibly a Hawking Black Hole...
