slow slow patching

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Hi,

decided to try this out, and purchased the game. Now, after downloading the torrent, I see I have 3 gig's of patching to do...annoying. Secondly, after 2 hours, I've patch 19 percent? really? Its horribly slow patching on a 20/2 download system. Normally I get 2.3 Mb per second...

Is there anything to do about the slow patching speed?

Btw, I'm in europe, if that makes any difference.

i am in excact the same situation as you are, after hearin a lot of my friends talk about STO i decided to try it out as well. slow patching and europe here as well. i decided to let it run while i went to my job, but after i came back it seems the patcher crashed and i have to do it again... i think(after reading a lot of topics) that we are not the only ones with this problem though.

    It even stops occasionally...

This isnt something that is going to make me keep subscribing, especially if its a known issue for europeans.

Oh well, plenty of other MMO's out there, then.

oh, I'd rather not, but then again, if I have to wait for 2-3 hours every time there's a patch, it becomes a bit pointless.

I've been waiting for this game a long time, and now that they seem to have done a lot since launch I'd really love to play it, make no mistake. Its just pointless if I never actually do get to play ;-)

it's the same for me. Since some times the dowload rate and ping rates getting worse and worse. More and more lag appear in game etc.. Most of my contacts tell the same. I would say they decreased their service rates with their isp.

Another question is .. why is every patch always 500mb and higher even if they don't patch or add any contend.

I was just having this problem, and I usually don't. I changed my proxy options and it sped up, no disconnects this time.

On the patcher, at the top, choose options. you have the option of choosing which proxy or to not use one at all. if you're using one, try unchecking Patch VIA Proxy.

I don't use the proxy on default but i tested patching via proxy and not. It's always slow.

same here .. all my friends want me to play this game with them but cant even download that ridiculous patch .. are there any manual patch files I can download? And since I activated the account, do I lose day(s) of my 30 day trial since I cant patch this game up?

make sure you have your port forwarding and activation setup to your gaming pc on your network for the 7000-7500 range since ports are randomised on the servers when connecting this should help ease the traffic and provide faster patching aswell as less ingame lag.

patching is done on port 7255 to if that port is blocked or filtered patching will be slowed. you can try the patch by proxy option in the launcher option to see if that help.

I bought sto from D2D. Download speed there is 1.2mb/s. Then started patching STO, and found out it needed 7.8gb patch.. That's AFTER downloading like 6-8 gb from D2D. And after 6 hours Ive only downloaded like 320 mb... -_-

I went to the options and changed to eu proxy and download via proxy (what the hell does it mean anyway?), it seems to go SOMEWHAT faster. With the reviews STO has been getting, I would think they would try to avoid aggrivating their customers even before they started playing.

Also seeing this from New York / USA, ISP is Time Warner Cable / Road Runner. The proxy setting helped for about 5 minutes and then the rate tanked again. I'm on a 10/1 line with commercial-grade network hardware (above and beyond TWC standard) and never saw this problem in the past with STO. There have been no changes to network configs or anything of that sort.

To Cryptic: I don't appreciate this after resubbing, please let us patch PRIOR to being on paid time so we can actually make use of our purchase. (It didn't offer the patch prior to resubscribing.)

I just enabled port 7255 open to all computers, and nothing changed.

It's Cryptic's fault and they won't admit it. The person who closed my ticket had absolute no clue what he was talking about. Starting with the December 22 patch, they added HTTP to their patch server and I have been unable to download anything consistently for CO or STO. All files stall at 0.0 Req Data, do nothing, patcher loses connection, and keeps retrying infinitely. Sometimes it succeeds to download one file.

I checked out the file called "pcl" which is a log, and there's a new adress that the patcher contacts. Only started appearing after Dec 22.

Will not patch on 3g or 4g USB tethering. I can't even patch on stinken slow dialup either. Now that's just wrong. If dialup won't download a shred of data from them, then it's definitely not my fault. It's slow, it's crappy, but if there's something to download, my 56k will start to get data, take a week, and eventually finish. But ever since Dec 22 I've had absolutely no luck getting this figured out. My previous patch went through finally after running this nonstop for a couple DAYS, and I thoguht they fixed it, but no.

I KNEW I wasn't the only one with patching problems, and now other people are stepping forward as well. What is going on? How do we get our patch on? Please, somebody help. I'm usually not this demanding, but I'm feeling withdrawal over here. :(

BTW to those patching and actually able to patch, I recommend you clear out everything in your installed folder except the launcher and the folders which contain only text files, because so many files were changed in Season 2 and Season 3 that most of the files being installed by the installers are no longer used. This is why you are getting those huge patch sizes. Size before Season 3 was 5 and a half gigs something, and size after was only 6.20gb or so. My patch size when testing Season 3 on Tribble was 3gb, so where did it go? Obviously when redownloading the launcher only downloads needed files. If your Live folder is bigger than 7.5gb at most, consider redownloading everything through the launcher if you like saving disk space.

Just wanted to add my own bump to this thread.

So far I've had STO patching for 3 days. It's downloaded approx. 2GB worth of data. My internet connection is sync'd at 12mbit.

I have forwarded ports, disabled firewall, all the usual stuff.

In the last hour it's downloaded about 4 mb worth of the 1.5GB I have left to patch.

Just wanted to add 2 cents worth, if any admin do read these forums.

Have always been interested in STO but wasn't keen on paying monthly fees to play any game. Bought the Collecter's Edition for cheap which came with 30 days free trial & have been spending most of day 1 of the trial installing & patching the game. I'm only half through the patch.

Guess my trial will be short by a few days

I was gonna start my own thread but had a look and are more than enough on the subject of slow patching so just thought i'd add to this one. i brought the games this morning, installed and started patching....nearly twelve hours on and have not even done 1%!!!!!! As other posts suggest i have fowarded ports from 7000-7500, i have tried with a proxy and no change. I am lucky to get 20kbs out of it!! at this rate it could take the first month just to patch!! and by the looks of it is nothing that will change that. This is just plain stupid sorry cryptic am not impressed at all so far so may even give up on the game before even playing it! money well spent i'd say:mad:

right that's my rant over! lol

    24 Kbps - 48 Kbps!?
7255 Forwarded (tried with firewall disabled also)
Tried with US proxy, tried without US proxy (Im located In Australia).

You have got to be joking. Thank god I have attempted to check out the trial, prior to purchasing. If this is normal, and from searches on the forums/net it certainly appears to be, then why would I want to pay money for this 'service'?

This is simply the most pathetic excuse for an update service I have ever seen. I had hoped that what I had heard regarding patching etc. was false - apparently not.

Lift your game Cryptic - you may actually attract some more customers...

I have to say, i'm with Thomas.Anderson. I downloaded the trial of this game with the intention to buy a lifetime subscription as i had heard this game was the bomb (expression). The problem is, it really is A bomb not THE bomb. 4 times out of 10 i run the installer it crashes after patching an exceptionally minimal amount of data. 1 time out of 10 it works and patches ok, albeit it very slowly, and i turn my comp off after i had enough of staring at it. The other 5 times out of 10 all i get is "patching...patching...patching...patching" etc etc, no progress shown or data downloaded.

I am actually really surprised that a company, any company, is able to supply customer with this service......and people actually still pay money for this? Are you freaking kidding me?

I have successfully resisted all urges to play any sort of MMO up until this point. The one MMO i find interesting to play and it has the most shoddy installer / patching experience i have EVER experience in my entire life....including windows 95.....and thats saying SOMETHING!

I dunno how you people go, having paid for a subscription and all you get is this. Paying for a game and then not being able to play it? If i charged my customers for a service they never received, all hell would break loose. But it seems like its VERY possible in this scenario.

The fact that whatever company runs this service still exists is a miracle, and an absolute wonder to me.

Geez, I agree that there's a huge problem with the patching system. I have roughly 3GB to download in patches (bought the game off Steam) and the speed is terrible. I have a 5Mbit download connection that's stable at it's maximum speed (550-600kbps in download usually). But the speed that i'm downloading these patches isn't anywhere close.

Same as everyone, if the game patches sucks in UK imagine Spain...

When I end my month subscription I will propably cancel it forever, it's awfull how you can get so painfull technical help. And not that I play everyday, I'm the kind of client any online game should want to have...

I am not asking for answers in my language, but perhaps a european patch server could help a lot to clean your image with us (european costumers).

It is sad to think for sure no one of Cryptic will answer my concerns.

There is only 1 Atari employee, 1 Cryptic employee, and 1-2 GMs who seem to monitor this forum now. Most of the support you receive will come from other helpful players like PegasusMD. For personalized support from Cryptic, your best bet is to submit a support ticket through the main website.

*edit* I just noticed coderanger posts from yesterday. I thought he disappeared. :D

 Thanks devast8tor, If I stayed so long in the game it is truly for the nature of the players and not for the support of the developers, I greatly appreciate the attitude towards me.

Hope I can solve the issue personally, and I hope Cryptic realises that an International product needs International Support as long as they charge International subscriptions to play and not different prices for diferent services and experiences.

    Thanks again,

As a a side note, the patcher is semi-intelligent about keeping data that has already downloaded so if your connection hangs or the download rate gets really slow, you should be able to close and restart the patcher as often as you wish and it will resume where it left off. Also make sure that you don't have multiple copies of the launcher running in the tray or that will slow down your overall download speed.

When you think about how they distribute their patches, it's easy to see why it's so slow. It's nothing on your end, it's the fact(s) that-
    1. They come out with "Episodes" all the time, which is a constant stream of new content for players to download.
    2. When a new Episode is released, everybody is trying to download it at the same time from their server, which is a LOT of traffic.
    3. There's no telling when a player might try to log in, and they may have some catching up to do on the new content, which would further slow down their server's upload rate.

There's only one way to avoid the "traffic jams".... Phased Rollout. And, like a certain other MMO, they could have the launcher start downloading everytime you log OUT, instead of trying to get in, then have a small activation patch when it goes live.
I just wanna keep on Trekkin' til the phasers burn OUT.
Not get stuck at the tracks watching the train go by.

Has anyone figured out how to make downloading of the patches a lot quicker??. 3 days ago I had 1600mb to download and today, after a lot of launcher crashes I still have 883mb to go.

I have tried update by Proxy on Both US and UK and still no faster. I know it isn't my system as I have NO PROBLEM downloading from anywhere else - this could be the end of me paying my subscription can't have this just becase I don't play a game for a couple of weeks.

Another UK player here, getting a pathetic 15-30K/sec during patching, meaning that while my american friends update in minutes it takes me hours, even days to update sometimes.

And today when trying to patch with the new 'log in, log out THEN patch' stuff, the client just gives up.
First time I logged out I had 1160mb to patch, the client dropped when I'd reached maybe 8%.
Logged in, logged out, patcher just quits.
I've tried several times, and it just doesnt even try patching.
Somehow I doubt its patched 1160mb. And since I'd already downloaded 70% of the patch last night before having to shut my machine down, why was it even showing 1160meg? Did the patcher discard the data from the hours I'd already given up to patching?

And as for the ingame experience, it has its highs and lows. Today, "woeful" would be more fitting. It took four minutes for my ship to warp in from sector space to ESD. I dont mean loading screen, I mean camera in system watching people coming and going, and waiting 4 minutes for my ship to show up. Then another eight minutes of yo-yoing back and forth trying to get into ESD itself before finaly getting dropped from the server.

I'm in the UK, I'm on a 4meg line and can sustain about 450K/sec, so its not a problem my end. My desktop network traffic monitor shows 10-30K while patching... and thats with two IM clients running at the same time, one of them being AIM.

Seriously, if I werent already a lifetimer, this would really have me reconsidering continued subscription at times...
I appreciate that the way the patcher works pretty much eliminates the possibility of downloading individual files via say, torrents, but something's really got to be done about the performance.

Not to sound stuck up or anything, but surely lifetime subs should get some kind of preference in updating? We dropped a lot of money up front after all, and most of our other benefits are now available to the masses in one way or another.

I have got to the stage where I don't know whether to laugh or cry -

4 days ago I have 1600mb to patch - after four days I got it down to 883 mb at 2.00pm today. Went out came back thinking I could possibly finish off the patching rpocess in the next 3 days -

    WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously there is a new release today because I now have 1352mb to patch.

At this rate I should be able to play the game by Wednesday next week having spent 8 days patching and then each time they release something new I will take 2 to 3 days to patch that as well.

    What a crock of ****!!!!:mad::mad::mad:
