Impulse engine comparison

I'm torn about which impulse engine to use.

I have been running with efficient impulse engines IV an am now vice admiral and the aegis engines seem like nice alternatives. I am looking for opinions on pros/cons of each as to what people think is best and for what type of ship (I am va with 3 chars running a tactical retrofit, science retrofit, and excelsior) so all input will be valued.

Efficient gives +5 weapons, shield, and aux power but turn and burn abilities are tier 4 miserable
Aegis gives +10 combat maneuvers, high power efficient

Borg are worse than efficient as as far as I can tell they don't have a bonus other than being faster, let me know if I am wrong in that assumption though.

    What power level does your engine run at normally?

    25-50?
    50-75?
    Higher?

    I really do believe people get to dependent on the Efficient engines.

    Slap on a diminishing thingy on them lowering their efficiency as you level up.
    That would be sooooooooooo hilarious.

    Personally I wouldn't use IV engines no matter what the advantages in an escort. Just because in an escort (Or BoP) you need the turning and maneuverability. But if that is for some reason unimportant to you, you could stick with them for now.

    However it is an issue use the Aegis. Also, you can combine the aegis things for defense boost and that is always nice. And that is what I am trying out right now in my BoP. Plus the cool glowing visuals of the shields. :cool:

    Darren, I normally run at full throttle (edit not full impulse lol) except for during Infected when I park myself hull to hull with the cube and just go for it.

    I mean your engine power levels not the speed setting. :)

    You get bonuses depending on what power level your engine is at (i.e. x out of 100)

    The power directed to engines is 25+bonuses. I generally do minimum shield & engine power, with primary max going to weapons and secondary to aux. I use covariant shields so there's no sense wasting power there, and I generally use abilities, batteries, and deuterium when I need to go fast or turn well.

    Escort = 29 engines (would be 25 w/out efficient)
    Cruiser = 44 (would be 39 w/out efficient)
    Science = 34 (would be 29 w/out effient)

    Thanks for the clarification, I thought the bonuses were based on throttle setting, not power diversion.

    Keep in mind that Combat Engines are for low-power mode, Impulse are for medium, and Hyperimpulse Engines are for high power settings.

    rule 101 in escrot and their impulse drives, anything that gives you below 28 impulse speed is bad for you :)

    But for the escort the Aegis ones are really nice or any hyper with turn and speed bonusses :)

    for cruisers effiecient still work, though I still go with a set item if i have the full set.

    Science I like combat impulse engines the best because you be running ar low power.
