Reason why is, in my eyes, if starfleet did get its hands on "uber tech" they would take it apart and see if there's a way to make it on mass in a starfleet fashion. elaborate: the Canon starfleet ships are prob not just designed by one race but a combination, but you dont see that in their design, one part isnt clearly vulcan, other parts arent clearly [insert random fed race here]. So why would looted borg tech just be shoved on a ship like that. i like the unity of the federation, the unity that shows in a common design of ships ... and all that borg sh.t is just plain horrid!
It looks kind of goofy, but ruined the game for you? That's a little far for me. I usually just roll my eyes a little and move on. IS there an eye-roll emoticon? Let's try it out:
First, you can always disable visuals. second, think everyone except Janeway fans (her ship looked like something out of junkyard with bungie chords holding stuff onto her ship for a while) agree that strapping this stuff to your ship makes most the ships look like they have mold growing all over it. Heck if you warped into ESD with this stuff on your ship you'd be fired on!
In defense of Aegis, headlights on for safety...
In defense of Borg gear, wear it with pride knowing "canon" players heads are exploding and showing people that the STFs are not insanely impossible. Besides, actually looks kinda cool on my fleet escort however the Borg pancake kinda makes people puke....
Starfleet shouldn't mass-produce retrofitted technology. The borg tech we have now is really prototype technology - most of it is still too borg. Who knows what kind of issues or drawbacks may arise from adapting borg tech? That's why we lucky few starfleet admirals get to test said technology to its full potential first.
The trick to adapting foreign technology is to build one's own version from scratch after first fully studying and grasping all the details and inner workings of said foreign tech. This can take far longer than a couple of decades. Remember borg tech is supposed to be thousands of years ahead of Fed technology. Guinan said so in "Q Who" when the borg were first introduced.
Eventually a fed version of this borg tech will probably be clean and symetrical and steel grey with blue lights the way you want it. Meanwhile I suggest you craft an aegis set and stop complaining.
I do not thing that you are alone on that. I mean the basic argument is right, but I didnt cosider the borg set as "a federation production based on borg technilogie", more as proverbial "lootet working borg parts put to use". Although.... i find it hard to believe that the federation works that way on a regular base, especially with such a dangerous technologie, especially since almost every ship is equiped that way now.... Since everybody seems to use the same parts, imagine what would (in canon^^) happen if the Collective manages to activate some overseen subsystems in that technologie.... And overtake whole STarfleet AND the KFD at once^^ (for the Klingons, by the way, I can imagine that they basicly use captured technologie that way^^).
But ruin the game? You can switch it of, where is the proplem?
I just imagine that while I was down on the surface for all those hours and change doing the surface portions, my ship was boarded and under seige by the Borg and the crew didn't quite get rid of them in time to prevent partial assimilation.
And then there wasn't time to remove the tech before having to proceed to the next STF.
I find the borg set visuals over the top, same for the Aegis deflector. But that comes to no surprise to me seeing the game, the community and the engine behind it. For me it is a bit of latent CO + young kids want facy stuff mixed together in a star trek blender.
But I do not mind lets people be happy with it, I like the Aegis shield/impulse visuals a bit more plain, but great looking.
Well, it is an MMO and the open-minded Trek IP, so wanting to cover one's eyes and plug one's ears seems counter-intuitive.
im just pointing out everybody has gone with the 'disable your visual' line as if he complaining about his ship (which he might be). i suspect he just means other peoples visuals are annoying him.

Finish reading post above - I intended to answer what you speak of.
I also consider these sets 'over the top' and even a little gaudy. However, I LOVE them and would love to see 30 more in the future. The thing is, this isn't actually STARTREK... no no no.... it's a game based off of the Star Trek franchise. I don't consider that a bad thing, it's simply enevitable that such things will happen.
Take any MMO that allows you to have 'vanity costumes' you can wear over your armor...
Perfect World for example... know how many scantilly clad school girls I have seen running around in there?
Take for example any dance in ANY MMO...
WoW, Guildwars, ect... how many sci-fi/fantasy novels/movies do you know of that have the main characters doing the 'cabbage patch', or the 'running man'?
Thing is, no matter how much Cryptic strives to make this game 'Trek' as possible, it will never ever truly feel that way. As I said, I don't think thats a bad thing. We arent on a movie set, or in a studio... nope, we are playing a game.
...and in this game, we just happen to have a few new 'costumes' that everyone is going to try out.
The Borg stuff is perfect for RP purposes (and in my opinon waaay better than the holoemitters, wich are simply too expensive, hours of Dabo for an 15 Min charge?).
It is a bit overused at the moment, but ...ruined the game? thats a so ... Drama Queen.

If that's the case, then as Captain of his own vessel, he can do whatever he wants with his own ship.
But in that same vein, I'll be damned if I'll let someone else tell me what I can do with my ship.
(RP / Canon aside, as we all know it's Starfleet's ship..they're just letting me borrow her for a little while.)

am i alone in this?
It's simple. The galaxy is at war on multiple fronts, on being the Borg. See these ships flying around partially assimilated? They narrowly escaped becoming Borg themselves. Go on your merry way doing missions and RP with that thought. It is after all, canon.
lol what he said, personally I'm not a fan of the graphics & the powers aren't all that amazing but I do enjoy the tractor beam whit out the waste of bridge officer slot lol if this was hard cannon we would all have tractor beam as a standard but that would be fun either.
And if you don't have the borg stuff their, STO is & MMO it is meant to be a social game their are always enough people looking to do the STF's I got all the gear but I'm really starting to enjoy the STF's & I'm sure when Gozer go's true whit the few fixes that they need their even gone be better
I play whit people from all over the world & thats what I enjoy the most I have played whit people from all over Europe even whit Australians whit out any lag problems at all what more do you need.
I think how Cryptic handled the Borg sets and the ability to switch the visuals on and off on your ship is perfectly fine. Customization is a key component to MMO's and a player's way of self expression.
However, I think this does add fuel to the argument of a client side option of how other player ships, character uniforms etc are rendered.
I feel that the majority of players fall in the middle, with a general indifference to how other player's ships, avatars, and crew look. But, there is two other groups that fall at opposite ends of this spectrum. Players who inisist on inflicting their innane customization with the intent of ruining other people's immersion, and players who feel that there should be conformity in appearance.
For some reason, game companies always side on the rights of the players who intentionally create the craziest colour schemes, uniforms and ship layouts knowing that they are driving other players nuts. It's like the Devs feel they have this obligation to uphold some "right of free expression", all the while trampling on the other players who would love to play their game but in a more canoncentric environment.

This is exactly the problem. All these people running around in crazy colored uniforms, nothing like the show and now everyone has borg pieces and/or aegis pieces. This has seriously ruined my entire life.

You are able to turn the visuals off...I really fail to see how toggled cosmetics could ruined the game for anyone; then again I'm not anyone

I can see sarcasm....ALERT M. NIGHT SHAMALAMALALAMA, I GOT A MOVIE FOR HIM.
I can't say that the Borg set ruined the game for me. Granted I do think it looks a little silly on some of the ships, but on others looks very clean and sleek. My personal visual preference is the Aegis set.

Same here.
I will also note with a fond smile that the Borg set brings back many very happy memories of Star Trek Armada for me.

Don't worry Cedrico, this is just a phase. Why do people pursue it? Because it's new and it's there. It'll pass. The game has a long way to go before variation is balanced.
I only use the borg console because I love the stats. After 2 days I grew tired of the look. Now fixing the Aegis set. I'm sure I've had enough of the looks within in a week. I just like to get the gear that is hard to get, at least with one character, because there just isn't that much out there yet.
Ill admit I dont really like the way the borg stuff looks. Maybe it was that episode of the office I saw before first seeing the components in question, but all I can think when I see the ships that have them on is wow that ships got the space herps.
As for the agisis set which yes I do use I see as a result of my minions/crew having a night on the town of 1960s Vegas. Apparently in a drunken fit of engineering and thievery they seam to have stolen a TRIBBLE load of blue neon and faulty ballast. At least I think its faulty, the shortbuss right nacelle seems to be off half the time then will just flicker for a while before it makes a loud humming noise and turns off again. I would turn it off completely but Im hoping it will act like a giant bug zapper when borg get to close.
As much as I think both sets are a bit gawdy and have the stink of massive shoulder pads you could house a family in. I do know people like the sets just like some people like spinners massive spoilers and horribly obnoxious chrome rims. its something to set yourself apart from everybody else there are only so many ships to use at va and the majority are in smiler ships for their class because of console and bo station option to boot.
Adding a client side option to turn stuff like this off or force others to conform to a type look on the client side may not be popular with everybody but I do think it would go far in satisfying the majority of players. It would let people that dont like the lights and more colorful costume options it turn it off everybody else could leave it alone. it would also help quell any future complications about what is considered appropriate for character costume options down the road and give the devs more breathing room in what they can add to the game. By character costume I mean your toon bos and ship.

Personally I think the borg sets look cool. (as does the Aegis... well as long as you turn the deflector off aegis looks cool anyway)
and I can't wait for the Andorian and Vulcan ships to be released.

personally i like it. i can understand others dont, although 'ruined the game' seems an over-reaction to me. minor annoyance seems more appropriate.

Maybe if the developers allowed people to disable visuals client-side - then we can have all sorts of cool, new things on our ships.
im just pointing out everybody has gone with the 'disable your visual' line as if he complaining about his ship (which he might be). i suspect he just means other peoples visuals are annoying him.

I like the hot rodded look on the ships, personally.
Its my ship until they blow me to bits.
on a side note
they should have known that before they gave me command.
It's simple. The galaxy is at war on multiple fronts, on being the Borg. See these ships flying around partially assimilated? They narrowly escaped becoming Borg themselves. Go on your merry way doing missions and RP with that thought. It is after all, canon.
A simple solution to a simple dilemma.
