Reading the recent low-price announcements regarding digital download versions of STO got me the idea of getting a friend of mine something like that as a gift. He has a certain interest in Star Trek / STO but essentially not the time to really play it. So I thought I could give him a small new years present by gifting him one of those cheap copies so he gets the opportunity to take a peak at it without any large(r) sum of money going to waste if he doesn't get to do more than the tutorial or so.
So, long story short: seeing that the amazon digital download would get tied to my amazon account and that "gifting is not available for this item" as per their website, what would be the cheapest alternative to get and gift a retail version of STO to someone?
I don't live in the US so the amazon verrsion is probably not possible anyway but theoretically, could I buy it on there and just send my friend the key and he can download the game from somewhere else/cryptic etc.? Any other options I am missing?
You could do as you said, simply by buying it and giving the key to the person so that they could download it themselves.
Living outside America is no obstacle, I live in Europe and managed to get it. What you do is simply put an american state (with proper post code) and country as being USA. It might not work straight away, but trial and error was what got it for me.

At least, that's what I think.
I bought the game and a time card for a friend of mine living in Hong Kong, gave him the CD key and the sub card's key and he was playing with me the next day.

How/where does he download the game then? Doesn't that have to be through the amazon account that bought the game?
Let us know who that works out for you. I'm based in Europe as well and would love to be able to use Amazon's deal.
It worked out perfectly fine, so far.
As it was mentioned I just had to list a US billing adress with a valid state/zip code and was then able to proceed without problem. I now just have to catch my friend to pass him the key etc.

The only thing you need is the code.
Oh that easy, hehe. I am off to buy on amazon then.
Thanks for the help everyone!

Great, thanks! Worth a try then!
