When i try to launch STO via steam on my laptop It goes to the cryptic launcher autoupdate, which usualy (on my PC anyway) sends me to the log in screen. But in this case this error message pops up, 'A file was locked that could not be opened for writting' the title of the error is 'Patcher error'. Does anyone know how or what I change to make this work?
Actually, I meant force verify on the STO launcher itself, launch it, then before putting your pw in, click options, check the force verify box, click ok, enter pw, submit.
Ok no files are corrupt, and I cant get that far, as I press 'Play' it then opens the autoupdater little box in the left, and before it opens up the big box to be able to enter password, it comes up with that error message, what should i do now?
Only thing i can think of is, download the game again, and use the new DL to login, you'll have a new install in a different directory. Time consuming but all i can think of. http://www.startrekonline.com/download
it did this to me too when I first grabbed it through steam. Actually, it worked great through the beta then as soon as it went live I couldn't launch via steam.
Try going into your steam directory (where you have steam installed) go to SteamAps>Common>Star Trek Online and find launcher.exe, double click it. I think I read that you tried this, it fixed my problem when it was doing it to me.
If it is still being wonky after that I remember reading something months ago about deleting the folder in that same directory labled "Hoggs" and letting the game re-patch itself from there.
If you know the name fo the file thats "locked" and unable to be "written" to, then go to your main Steam folder:
C: -> Program files -> Steam -> SteamApps -> Common -> Star Trek Online
Find the file then right click it, go to properties and ensure that "Read only" is unticked.

Also make sure your Anti Virus isn't blocking any files (if you have one), I have AVG and more than once it has recognised a Steam game file as a virus (because of the way the file executes) and has prevented updates and launching both via Steam and via game launchers.

If those both fail then redownload the game from here:

Thanks
Then select the 'Local Files' tab, and click 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'
It'll probably tell you that a bunch of files are corrupt, and need to be re-downloaded. At least that's how it worked for me.
Then again I thought I'd save some download time by copying my original install directory into the steam one. So now I'm redownloading from scratch.
Thanks

Those are the only suggestions I can give you mate.
Good luck!
Do you have a firewall killing the application without your knowledge? Might want to check to see what your firewall is doing.
I couldn't install my Mass Effect 2 DLCs for months and was wondering why, then it dawned on me that Comodo was killing the installers.
