Why in the hell do people think that Torpedoes need to eject out of the side of a ship, I will never understand. Star Cruisers do this (IMO it looks ridiculous) and now I discover that the T5 Raptor, specifically the Qin Heavy Raptor, does this as well. It looks odd, and I honestly can not understand why this had to be done this way...
Torpedoes fire out the front of the ship, always has, it is canon. Maybe I am being a bit over the top here, but damn I am sick of watching Torpedoes take a 90 degree turn out of my ship to hit the target. Seriously, I have put up with the Star Cruiser doing this, do we honestly have to put up with a Tactical Ship doing this as well?
Don't give me that TRIBBLE that this is where the Torp Tubes are, because I have inspected both ships very closely, and this is not true. Those little things people are calling Torpedo tubes are actually phaser points. What in the hell is the fascination with firing Torps out the side of the ship?
Launch failure, had to dig for a safe to post version since the original sound has an expression you'd expect to hear fom a sailor 8') http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5HFJPzrYtA

This is not RL though, this is not a Boat in the Sea, this is Star Trek, and it looks absolutely goofy when my Torpedo fires out of the side of my neck, then takes a 45 degree turn to hit my target directly in front of me. If my target is to the side of my ship, then fine. But when my target is directly in front of me, it looks pretty damn stupid.

I actually found this kinda wonky as well but just shrugged it off considering we've seen torpedoes in the series do 90 degree turns and fly around everywhere to hit a target.
This is true, but these are gradual turns that they make, much like a heat seeking missile. These torpedoes are taking extremely sharp turns directly from the Tube Launcher.
I can not and will not get behind this. If the Devs wanted to give the illusion that these ships have more than one Torpedo Tube, then they should make it fire from the front when the target is in front of you, and to the sides when the target is on an angle.

Hrm had to re-watch message in a bottle (voyager episode andy TRIBBLE is so funny in that episode XD) since that was one I was referring too as it was the last one i saw with a torp that went up, and you're right it was a gradual shoot out then go up. I do agree, this should be looked at when time permits (changing physics of the torp to gradually change it's heading) or just fix the launchers on the star cruiser hehe.
Blame Alex Jaeger?
He's probably the one that started it with the Akira class and its 14(or something) torpedo tubes.
15. Not to mention the non-existing fighters that wondership was supposed to carry.
Luckily the ship never made it past the drawing board in this configuration - though you can still see the angled launchers in the model (when firing torpedoes the Akira still does this in the standard way however).

As far as the game is concerned, those "phaser points" are simply "hardpoints" (points from which a weapon effect emits). I've noticed on my alt's Saber class that phaser cannons, phaser beams, and torpedos can all come from the same point on the hull.
As far as the ship design, it does make sense to have some launchers on the sides for larger ships (mainly cruisers), and I could see it on the Akira. Mainly because when you're in a cruiser (in-game), you're usually doing broadsides, so having a side-ways pointing launcher would enable you to direct torpedo fire as well. Obviously that's not how it works currently, but it would make sense if that's how it did work.
Even so, I do agree that the current torpedo effects need to be worked on at some point.
The AIM-9x missile can pull 50-60 g's in a turn, that isn't gradual. 8')
If you can believe all the silly TRIBBLE about trek you can believe a torpedo can course correct after it is ejected.
We ALL believe silly TRIBBLE about trek btw, or people wouldn't be arguing about the stuff the do here. Some just believe it too much.8')
I could justify Tirbbles being fired from a Phased Cannon and blowing up with the power of a nuclear bomb, with that same logic as well. But let's face it, even using your own logic, that would look silly.
I actually don't even mind it for the Raptor (I could consider it a "novel approach"), but at the same time I can perfectly understand the gripes people have with it.
You know what would be interesting? Having a system like in CO that allows you to choose where your weapons fire from.
STO is full of weirdness when it comes to weapon nodes - the Nova's phasers firing out of the bussard collectors is just another example - and a system like in CO would help alleviate this issue.
I'd prefer things to stay close to canon ,but if you can already choose what kind of weapon you put into your ship, then you can just as well influence where it gets installed.
Looks silly to you, I'd be ticked off if my Star cruiser changed, I might even throw a tantrum and stop playing.
nah I wouldn't not over something that small and silly ;)
Even though I disagree with you and feel it looks silly even on the Star Cruiser, that is not the ship I am going after here. The Qin Raptor is the one I am after.
