Why do people insist on picking names like Enterprize-D or Enterpr1se or V0yager for their ship names? Isn't the point of a mmo to make your OWN character and ships and stuff? Why try to copycat from the show? At least TRY to be original.
That being said, is there some mechanism for reporting names like that? Or is it even reportable?
I agree people should be original, but people have free will so you cannot force them. Since it is against the rules you can report it, but I am not sure how to do it since I have never done it.
Is it lame? Sure. But the real question is, why do you care? Its their character/sub/ship, so let them be lame if they want to. And FYI, telling people to be original isnt very "original" either

I like the story aspect of what people do with their characters, I look at ship and character names around me and think 'oh that's a good ship name' and stuff. Then I see Jean Luc Picard flying around in the Enterpr1se. Like, seriously?!
STO's primarily about playing out individual fantasies like a single-player game rather then a tue MMO. That's why we have a 250 year old NX flying next to a 125 year old TOS Connie, flying next to a STO era Ushaan. Name unoriginality isn't any different then ship class unoriginality in the game.

LIke I said, I agree it lame. But you cant expect other people to name their characters/ships by your personal standards of "thats a good ship name" anymore than you would name your character/ship based on their personal opinions of what it should be.

I fully realize that, I think I was mostly just trying to point out that you are lame if you do this. Wasn't sure if using alternate spellings of trademark names was reportable though.

How is wanting to name your ship Enterprise more lame then wanting to fly the TOS Enterprise? Every time someone demands a canon ship get added to the game their not being original. They're being lame for not wanting original ideas in the new era the game is set in.
People don't want original. They want the fantasy.
TECHNICALLY speaking, going around filters is normally a no no in mmo's and reportable, but in this type of situation I don't remember if anyone ever said if it was allowed or not.
I don't mind people calling themselves names like jean-luc etc because some have some crafty stories as to why they use it. Others just claim to be that person which kinda distorts the story line as is anyways moreso than it already is.

I named several of my ships "JJ-prise" just to get at the people who cant stand the new movie
That said, I'm currently making fun of the "Twilight" franchise with my new character and ship
Why would you report someone anyway for having a name like that. Something truly offensive maybe. But seriously how does someone with the name enterprise-d make your gameplay so bad you feel the need to report them. Maybe it's not original but why not just fly on and leave them be.

Kind of reminds me of someone who writes down the tag number of a person who doesnt use their blinker and delivers it to the local police station

Flying around in the "TOS Enterprise" is actually just an old school constitution class, yes? So it's not REALLY the Enterprise afaik. I believe the name and registry markings reflect whatever ship name you select.
Even using a secondary ship name isn't so bad like USS Sutherland or something, but seriously, don't name your ship Enterprise, Voyager or Defiant or any misspelling of them.

His point is that the DESIRE to fly some iconic ship is an example of not being "original", because your copying something you have seen rather than trying to come up with your unique design.

Oh boy. You just crossed the line between simply giving your opinion of "its lame" and actually TELLING people what to do. Thank goodness we have free will.

The fact that your fantasy level triggers at a different place then someone else's doesn't make them bad or unimaginative people. As far as I'm concerned everyone who demands an Oberth or a T5 Constitution is unimaginative. That doesn't mean I'm going to penalize them to my trigger level rather then their own. Just as I have to ignore the unimaginative person sitting next to me in DS9 in their TOS Connie you have to learn to ignore the person in the Enterprize, Dephiant, or Voyageer.

Well Cryptic is the one telling them not to do it actually.
Sorry I even mentioned it, geez. Can't come on the forums without having my words picked apart like I'm a politician or something.
The forum isn't an "everyone agrees with me" place. You've certainly been here long enough to realize that by now. If you can't accept that someone is going to disagree with you then you probably shouldn't post at all; because everyone here gets disagreed with. That's the price we all pay for free will.
Kind of reminds me of someone who writes down the tag number of a person who doesnt use their blinker and delivers it to the local police station
Actually it'd be more like posting in the free add section of the local newspaper letting everyone know how lame so in so is for having a "coexist" bumper sticker. "I mean seriously, everyone has those. Why can't I drive around town and read something original on the back of someones car?"

It's not the disagreement that I have a problem with, it's the intentional antagonism. It's fine though, I'm over it. Lesson learned.

Careful what you wish for a few weeks ago I saw a USS 12 Inches Soft fly by.

I would have been very grateful if someone had done that the time some idiot just changed lanes front of me and I ended up on the shouder and into the guardrail years ago. I had my Mom and my nephew in the car when some fool almost got us killed, I missed the plate and if someone had gotten it they would have been a friend for life.

If someone wants to name their ship Enterprize or V0yager, or Dewhatever, and they're playing the game and otherwise enjoying themselves and not doing anything else out of line--if doing that enhances their enjoyment of the game, then as far as I'm concerned, more power to them. I remember during the early days of the game some truly obnoxious names for ships--bigoted, racist, cruel names. Thankfully, Cryptic has done a pretty good job of getting rid of those ship names at least. As for the players who named those ships--if they learned their lesson, that's great. If not, then I hope they're gone. Those are the cases where I get upset--when someone or someones deliberately ruins other peoples' enjoyment of the game through mockery, cruelty, or childishness.
That being said, for me a good chunk of my enjoyment of the game comes from developing and crafting ship and character histories and stories within the Star Trek universe. That's why I write Trek fanfiction and that's what first drew me to this game. I love giving my ships creative names. Some ships are named for mythological figures; others for heroes of mine; others for important events; and sometimes I like to give my ships names based on obscure and not so obscure references to see if anyone picks up on them: USS Claudius Ptolemy and USS Lorelei Lee being two examples.
So, to conclude this wall of text: As long as your ship name isn't offensive, bigoted, racist, or otherwise out of line, then name it what you want and have a good time.
I'm still hoping one day that Cryptic will become naming-TRIBBLE.... I'm still annoyed that there is no originality in naming because anyone can just copy someone else in-game.....I've seen a cople copies of my name and that was in the first month or so alone
Is it lame? Sure. But the real question is, why do you care? Its their character/sub/ship, so let them be lame if they want to. And FYI, telling people to be original isnt very "original" either
Agreed. If people want to name their ship the USS lolipwnsyouall, then so be it. While i may not like it, the only way i should have any control over what they do is if i offer to pay for their account and subsequently tell them what to do thereafter. I have a lot of respect for those that do put a little time and effort into their characters, names, and bios, because out of all the MMO's i've played, STO really brings out the best in people's own designs. I'm really thinking hard about making a bio for Reilyra, and i've been scribbling down a few thoughts during this Christmas break. The USS Borealis is her ship, while the IKS Sorrowyn is my Borg's Klingon ship. There are some great names out there, but just like in Wow, with people naming characters Dwarfwarrior or Wizardorc, i may laugh to myself about it, but i couldn't care less what they do in this or that game.

Hah, yeah something like that. But the name filters are in the game on purpose. idk, guess I'm the only one that gets annoyed with this stuff.

I'm pretty sure I quoted your statement, not Cryptic's. Its possible for more than one person to say the same thing, you know.

Can't some rAndom person fly what they want without you picking their creativity apart?

How are any of the replies in this thread more "intentionally antagonistic" than the original post itself?

Why don't you let bygones be bygones? It's the cool thing to do
