Respirator Missions

There have been discussions so far on Spacesuit missions. A question was even answered about it in a Q&A.
DStahl said the artwork and implementation of it was too much work. He only wanted to do it if the demand was truly great. (I paraphrased, please correct me if he said something completely different.)

I have another idea.

Why don't we have simple respirator missions? This could be on planets without hazardous radiation and normal earth pressure but low oxygen levels. It is simply not reasonable to assume that every planet in the galaxy is M-class.

All that is needed is a respirator mask. The coding for these masks is already there (Nausicaans) and opening up this coding to every race shouldnt be very different from the Visor coding.

All that is needed to implement it would be a random trigger for several Exploration missions. And maybe a rewrite of some dialog for exploration missions or other missions that take place on ground. For example:

'Sir, would you like to beam down to the planet now. You will be supplied with respirator masks in the transporter room to handle with the low oxygen levels on the surface'"

What are you're thoughts?

As I understood the preeminant Mr. Stahl, he said that they were working on space/environmental suits, but that the helmet tech (considering all the whiskers, horns, spike, etc, in the Alien Gen) was very very difficult.

I don't think he ever said they weren't working on it, or abandoning it, just that making the helmets adapt to all the different possible head sizes/shapes was making it's development crawl.

As a contributor to the venerable Spacesuit thread, I wouldn't have a problem with this at all. I will say though that in general Star Trek as a while has tended to put its characters in environments that are far more hostile then simply requiring breathing assistance, the Benzite perhaps being an exception since they require an exotic gas mix(and have the tech already implemented ;) ).

In all honesty what I would prefer would just have environmental variables that show that space travel is a dangerous business, even if it has become as routine as a Type I (I don't think the Federation qualifies quite as a type II or III civilization despite its size) civilization displays.
