Starship Names, Lets Start Putting the Letter Suffixes Where They Belong

It's bad enough that we have the USS Enterprize flying around, even worse to see the USS Enterprize-B. Energy Credits are pretty easy to come by nowadays, how about we spend some to rename the old ship? You could have the USS Enterprize-Old in your docks, and place the suffix where it belongs, after the registry number, on the new ship.

The problem is that starships with the same name can't exist, even with different registry numbers. The suffix is necessary to distinguish between the two.

Retire or rename the first ship, problem solved.

That's what I did when I upgraded to a Defiant-retrofit, I renamed the Defiant I already had something different, and made the new Defiant-retrofit the same name and registry+A.

I know that, As I said in my post rename the old one instead of the new one.

That's not a solution though, merely a workaround. It's annoying that I have to pay merits so I can properly use the suffix field in my starship's registry number.

The cannon solution would be to, as mentioned above, decommission the old ship.

Then decommission the ship, which is what would actually happen before the name passes on to another ship. There's no reason to hold on to your old ship, since you can always get it again later if you so desire. The only exception being the starter ship.
