Mark VII Torpedoes are EVIL

I was at Earth Spacedock, buying ship parts, when I noticed I could buy a mark VII torpedo launcher with the amount of credits I had, if I sold my mark II one. Naturally I bought it, discarding my old launcher. I had undocked, ready to blow stuff up with my fancy new torpedoes, when I realized I couldn't equip my ship with the launcher. I have the original ship that I began the game with, the light cruiser, so I probably need to buy a more advanced ship in order to use mark VII; the question is, why is it available for me to buy in the first place? If I can't use it, why can I buy it? Now I have a useless heavy torpedo launcher, and the most I can get for it is 2000 (I paid 6400 to buy it). I guess I'll just have to keep it in my inventory until I get a bugger ship. I know I'm being fussy, but I was really anticipating that new part.

    You kinda have to search for equipment based on your 'rank'. So if you're a LT, you're stuck with the low end equipment. I think the equipment level to rank is like this

    LT Mark I to Mark II
    LT COM Mark III to Mark IV
    COM Mark V to Mark VI
    CAPT Mark VII to Mark VIII
    RA LH Mark IX to Mark X
    RA UP Mark X to Mark XI
    VA - Mark XI to Mark XII

    Equipment tooltips should show the rank needed to equip that particular item.

    And why shouldn't I be able to purchase equipment higher than I can currently use? Maybe I'll be ranking up soon and want to pick up higher level gear in preparation. Maybe I see something drastically underpriced and am willing to take the risk that I can resell it at a profit.

    I would also suggest that vendors should be programed to only sell equipment one rank(Pips, not Mark) above the player's current rank. That way they can sell them, but not permit a player to end up like this gentalman did.

    Because, in real life, no-one will stop you, for example, buying a part that fits a different make and model of car than the one you have. Just like this game, it's seen as your responsibility to make sure that it's a part you can use.

    and stop player from buying stuff for other player or toon?

    I could understand if the item where not marked for the minimum rank required to use them but they are so it's need it. It will be a wast of their time...

    Firt off why would you ever need to buy the plain white gear from a vendor? I did that once and that was in closed beta when the drops didn't really work :)

    Beside it clearly list on the item what rank it is for, so if you still buy it and can't use it your own mistake.

    O and you are not a noob, just a newb big difference there :)

    I was pretty sure that items you can't use are marked in red somehow. If that wasn't then you might want to fill out a bug report. Level banding equipment is a standard in MMO's anymor. Those of us who are used to MMO's are shaking our heads but if you aren't familiar with MMO's you probably wouldn't be aware of the practice. In most single player games if you can find teh weapon or armor or whatever in question you cna immediately use it.

    I'm personally not even sure why they are level banding these things anyway. The restriction comes from the ship you are using. The actual DPS differences on the weapons themslves don't seem that large. Thats a whole other topic of discussion though.

    In th future just remember these level bands.

    Equipment mark 1-2 Lieutenant
    Equipment mark 3-4 Lt Commadner
    Equipment mark 5-6 Commander
    Equipment mark 7-8 Captain
    Equipment mark 9-10 Rear Admiral upper and lower
    Equipment mark 11-(12?) Lt Admiral

    They are of course using Roman numerals as well.

    I=1
    II=2
    III=3
    IV=4
    V=5
    VI=6
    VII=7
    VIII=8
    IX=9
    X=10
    XI=11
    XII=12

    and so on. I'll try to hop on later tonight and help refund your money but In the future keep in mind these level bands. Generally when you are buying new equipment you will want to try and go for the even numbered ones in each band.
